Danish MEP quits party over asylum policies

A European lawmaker for Denmark’s ruling right-wing party said Saturday he was leaving the party over its controversial asylum policies, which include plans for police to search asylum seekers’ luggage for valuables.

An MEP from Denmark’s centre-right ruling party has defected in protest at government plans to seize valuables from refugees to help fund their stay in the country.

Denmark has mainly been a transit country for refugees, and the minority Liberal government hopes to deter more from seeking asylum by taking valuables or cash worth more than 3,000 Danish crowns (£290) during border searches.

Labour leader vows to continue consulting membership and warns that politics should get used to the practice

The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, said polling the party’s members to help shape policy is here to stay as he marked his first 100 days in office.

Corbyn said consulting members would continue after he used the method to show support for his stance on Syria, adding: “Politics better get used to the idea”.

Chinese censors objected to Moranbong band calling US an ‘ambitious wolf’ and glorifying Korean war, says source

A North Korean pop group cancelled its Beijing concerts last week when Chinese authorities objected to “anti-American” lyrics in the show, said a source with ties to both countries.

The Moranbong band was visiting China with the State Merited Chorus and had been due to perform in Beijing on 12 December, but cancelled three hours before the show was to start.
