Suspected cholera cases hit 1 million in Yemen, Red Cross says

The number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen has hit 1 million, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday, as war has left more than 80 percent of the population short of food, fuel, clean water and access to healthcare.

An interpreter for Ukraine’s prime minister who was photographed with Theresa May inside Downing Street has been arrested on suspicion of working as a Russian spy.

Ukraine’s SBU security service arrested Stanislav Yezhov on Wednesday evening in the capital, Kiev. Video showed two officers leading him away. Yezhov had worked “for the enemy state [Russia] for a long time,” the prime minister, Volodymyr Groysman, declared on his Facebook page.

Hospital chiefs are told by NHS England to take drastic action, including setting up makeshift wards

Tens of thousands of patients are having their surgery cancelled and hospitals will set up makeshift wards in a dramatic escalation of the NHS’s efforts to avoid the service going into meltdown this winter.

In an unprecedented edict, NHS England has told hospitals to delay operations such as cataract removals and hip and knee replacements until mid-January. The only exceptions to the new policy are cancer operations and also what the NHS called “time-critical procedures” where the surgery has to go ahead to avoid the patient’s condition deteriorating further.

Moon Jae-in says if Pyongyang behaves itself, North Korean athletes could also be invited to take part in Winter Olympics

The South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, has suggested his country’s joint military drills with the US could be postponed to reduce tensions with North Korea, but said the move would depend on Pyongyang’s actions in the coming weeks.

Moon also said he would like North Korean athletes to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics in the South Korean town of Pyeongchang, amid concern that the regime could try to disrupt the Games, possibly by testing ballistic missiles or launching a cyber attack.
