Dangerous sewage pathogens have been found “hitch-hiking” on plastic litter washed up on some of Scotland’s finest bathing beaches, raising concerns from scientists the phenomenon could have far-reaching implications for human health worldwide.

The findings, by the University of Stirling, have confirmed environmentalists’ fears that ubiquitous, persistent and tiny plastic beads, or “nurdles”, found on beaches and in rivers and seas around the world, act as rafts for harmful bacteria, transporting them from sewage outfalls and agricultural runoff to bathing waters and shellfish beds.

Car prices to rise by ‘about 3%’ after decision to move to online-only sales reversed

Tesla has reversed a decision to close all its stores and move to an online-only sales model, the company has announced, pending the results of a further review on the usefulness of physical locations.

The initial decision was made as part of a plan to reduce costs at the company, in order to fund an across-the-board immediate price reduction of 6% on Tesla’s cars. Now, however, Tesla will be increasing the price of cars by “about 3%”, erasing half the savings.

Israel’s president has hit back at Benjamin Netanyahu after the prime minister said in reference to the country’s Arab minority that Israel was “not a state for all its citizens”.

Less than a month before the 9 April election in which the prime minister hopes to win with the support of far-right politicians and voters, Netanyahu wrote on Instagram that: “Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people – and only it.”

“He is stirring the dirt,” said Gabriel Abdullah, an Arab citizen of Israel who runs a tourism company in Jerusalem, of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. “That’s very, very dangerous, but he will use anything.”

Abdullah was not alone among members of Israel’s Arab minority on Monday in lambasting Netanyahu for saying the country was “not a state of all its citizens”. Many characterised his comments as a racist ploy to try to win the forthcoming general election.
