Trump wants Australia at rescheduled G7 summit

He still has to pay off Putin and pretend he is doing something.

The US President says he wants to invite Australia, Russia, South Korea and India to the meeting, and that the G7 in its current format is a “very outdated group of countries”.

Taiwan approves Gilead’s remdesivir to treat Covid-19

This probably has more to do with seeking US approval than with medical need.

TAIPEI (REUTERS) – Taiwan’s government said on Saturday (May 30) it had approved Gilead Sciences’ potential Covid-19 treatment, remdesivir, to treat the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Governments are racing to bolster supplies of remdesivir, which US regulators this month approved for emergency use.

California-based Gilead has said it will donate 1.5 million doses of remdesivir, enough to treat at least 140,000 patients, to combat the global pandemic.

Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Centre said the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration took into account “the fact that the efficacy and safety of remdesivir has been supported by preliminary evidence” and its use is being approved by other countries.

On that basis, the centre said the conditions had been met for approval of the drug for use in patients with “severe” Covid-19 infection.

Taiwan has been successful at preventing the coronavirus from spreading, thanks to early detection and prevention work and a first rate public health system.

It has recorded 442 cases and only 7 deaths. The vast majority of people have recovered, with just 14 active cases.

There is currently no approved medication or vaccine for Covid-19, but EU countries are already administering remdesivir to patients under compassionate use rules.

Japan and the United Kingdom have both cleared the drug for use and moved to begin supplying it to patients.

The United States, the world’s biggest pharmaceutical market, this month granted emergency use authorisation for remdesivir in Covid-19, but has yet to approve the broader use of the drug.

Anti-vaxxers’ influence and power could affect Americans’ willingness to take a Covid-19 vaccine, experts warn

A coronavirus vaccine may be a long way away, but there is already a threat on the horizon: anti-vaxxers.

Once a fringe presence in America, vaccine opponents have become better organized in recent years, a development that has contributed to the worst US measles outbreak in a generation in 2019.

‘Here’s a bedsheet, make a parachute!’ Republicans say, pushing us out of a plane | Hamilton Nolan

The heart of the Republican governing philosophy causes ludicrously insufficient responses to an existential crisis

The Republican fetish for “work” has always been a sham. The prime beneficiaries of Republican policies are, after all, the investor class, who by definition make their money while not working. As our current economic crisis worsens, Republicans cling to ideas that become increasingly separated from reality, like fundamentalists rejecting modern medicine even as their family member is dying. All of you, go back to work, or die trying!

Most of the world has asked people to stop going to work – temporarily, in theory – for the sake of public health. In the wiser countries of the world, the government is covering the payrolls of businesses through the worst part of these shutdowns, which has the dual benefits of helping employers not go broke, and keeping workers paid and employed until things can start getting back to normal.

Black CNN Reporter Arrested Live on Air While Reporting in Minneapolis

CNN reporter Omar Jimenez, along with two members of his producing team, was arrested early Friday morning while covering the Minneapolis protests. Their arrests, which were captured in a live broadcast, came despite Jimenez explaining to Minnesota state patrol officials that they were media.

“Put us back where you want us, we are getting out of your way, so just let us know,” Jimenez, who is Black, is heard telling officers before he’s placed in handcuffs. “Wherever you want us, we will go, we’re just getting out of the way.”

With the camera still rolling, Jimenez continued to explain to viewers on the latest from the demonstrations when an officer interrupted, “You’re under arrest.”

Another reporter with the network, Josh Campbell, a white man, said that he was nearby the scene and also stopped by police. But after identifying himself as a journalist, as Jimenez did, police allowed Campbell to carry on. “I was treated much differently than [Jimenez] was,” Campbell said.

Jimenez and his team, producer Bill Kirkos and photojournalist Leonel Mendez, have since been released.
