South Korea has ordered the closure of all schools and kindergartens in the greater Seoul area following a sharp rise in coronavirus infections.

South Korea has reported 17,945 infections and 310 deaths since the pandemic began. However, over the past two weeks, nearly 200 students and staff have tested positive in the greater Seoul area, prompting authorities to warn that the country is on the brink of a nationwide outbreak.

The education ministry said that online learning will continue until September 11.

The beginning of the spring semester had been postponed several times since March, but as daily coronavirus cases dropped sharply since a February peak, most schools reopened in stages between May 20 and June 1.

On Wednesday, tens of thousands of doctors launched a nationwide strike to reject the government plans to boost the number of medical students across several years, establish public medical schools, and allow government insurance to cover more oriental medicine.

They said the money would be better spent on improving pay and conditions to encourage more people to work outside Seoul.

Spain calls in its army to fight COVID-19 resurgence

Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday said he was making the army available to help regions fight a surge of coronavirus cases.

“We cannot allow the pandemic to take control of our lives again, we must take control, break this second curve”, he said, and added that the Spanish government will “provide the regions with the strength of the armed forces to carry out the tracing” of cases.

Sanchez said the evolution of the pandemic in Spain is “worrying”, but stressed it is still far from its peak in March. He also said that regions will be able to ask the government to apply a state of alert in their territories as well.

Russian-backed organisations amplifying QAnon conspiracy theories, researchers say

Russian government-backed organisations are amplifying conspiracy theories promoted by QAnon, raising concerns of interference in the November US election, academics who study QAnon said.

The movement, launched in 2017 with anonymous web postings amplified by YouTube videos, is popular among supporters of US president Donald Trump. It claims that Trump is working to bring down an international child sex-trafficking ring run by satanic global elites, including Hollywood celebrities and the “deep state”.

Researchers at Graphika, Stanford University and elsewhere, said there were no signs Russia was involved in the early days of the movement, but added that, as QAnon took on new topics, social media accounts controlled by a key Kremlin ally joined in.

Earlier, Russian government-backed media have stepped up coverage of QAnon, which began with a false proclamation Hillary Clinton would be arrested for an undetermined reason and now includes theories about child trafficking by Hollywood elites, the coronavirus and more.

“Though Russia is only one foreign actor capable of targeting US political audiences through the QAnon community, its history of operations appear to be the most ideologically aligned with the overarching QAnon theory. Russia also appears to have made the most effort to gain credibility within the community thus far”, the report said.

Star calls for live music to challenge social distancing rules, but faces fan backlash

Van Morrison has denounced the supposed “pseudoscience” around coronavirus and is attempting to rally musicians in a campaign to restore live music concerts with full capacity audiences.

The 74-year-old Northern Irish singer launched a campaign to “save live music” on his website, saying socially distanced gigs were not economically viable. “I call on my fellow singers, musicians, writers, producers, promoters and others in the industry to fight with me on this. Come forward, stand up, fight the pseudo-science and speak up,” he said.
