I have potential even if I’m a young mother

Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz

My experience during National Advocacy Weekend was excellent! For is the first time I was invited to something to important. It was an honor to be with so many women and men who shared their stories and fight for the same goal as me.

After the training, I wish to educate myself more about how to contact my Senators and Congress members. I also want to educate everyone on what the real needs in my community are.

I attended NAW without any fear and received so much information. It was so helpful because it will help me train myself to speak properly and to control my nerves.

Thank you National Latina institute for this opportunity to share with everyone. I realized that I have a lot of potential even if I am a women, young mother or student. I’m an unafraid immigrant!

Two human cases of Influenza A (H7N9) in Zhejiang verified by NHFPC

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) tonight (April 3) verified with the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) two confirmed human cases of Influenza A (H7N9) in Zhejiang, involving two men, aged 38 and 67 respectively. The 38-year-old man has passed away.

Laboratory tests on the patients’ specimens by the Mainland health authorities yielded positive results for H7N9.

According to the Department of Health of Zhejiang, no epidemiological links were identified among the two cases at this stage. So far, the 183 close contacts of the two patients are asymptomatic.

A spokesman for DH stressed that the CHP is closely monitoring the situation, will continue to maintain close liaison with the Mainland health authorities for more case information as well as keep a close eye on the advice from the World Health Organization.

The spokesman also advised travellers especially those returning from Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang with respiratory symptoms to wear facial masks and seek medical attention and reveal their travel histories to doctors. Health-care professionals should also pay special attention to those travellers who might have contact with birds or poultry in the four places.

Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz

By Johnna Dominguez

My story is not a dramatic one. I am Latina. But I am third-generation with light skin and hair. Some would say I “pass” and so I’ve never really had to worry about racist discrimination based on looks alone. I also grew up with economic privilege. So it might be safe to say that I grew up with a form of white privilege.

But I didn’t even see this myself until my experience during the National Advocacy Weekend. I grew up with an open-minded family, so I always thought myself to be a champion for the weak, the underprivileged, the downtrodden…whoever needed a cheerleader, I could do it! Now I realize how little waving my intellectual pom-poms actually does. Those affected by social injustice don’t need a cheerleader. That role allows someone like myself to become too complacent. No, those affected by social injustice need…

Direct Seeding Helps Moroccan Farmers Adapt to Climate Change | Green Prophet

And though Morocco’s Berbers have long cultivated water management practices that sustained their crops, it turns out that direct seeding can substantially improve yields in an uncertain future.

Planting directly in the soil

Direct seeding involves planting seeds directly into the soil instead of nurturing seedlings in water-intensive nurseries beforehand.

“…direct seeded plants are more likely to be able to reach moisture remaining in the soil after the rainy season has ended than those raised in plant nurseries because of their more extensive root system,” according to the Eden Initiative, which began promoting direct seeding in the Sahel in the 1990s.

“They are therefore better able to tolerate drought,” they add.

This is of particular importance to small farmers who have limited access to sophisticated irrigation systems, and where water supplies are intermittent, scarce and shared across various sectors.

Drought resistance

“Compared to traditional plowing and sowing, direct seeding (also known as “conservation agriculture” or “no-tillage”) allows for both increasing organic matter in soil and making the most of the limited rainfall,” Gabriella Izzi from the World Bank notes.

Government Announces Clampdown On Work-Shy Babies

Too bad not for work-shy Tories

Pride's Purge

(satire – sort of)

In the most radical clampdown on the work-shy yet, Iain Duncan Smith will announce that unemployed babies will be found compulsory 30 hour-a-week work placements and if they fail to turn up for job interviews their parents will lose their child benefits for at least three months.

The Welfare Secretary will announce the move as part of a groundbreaking package of measures aimed at reforming the benefit culture by ensuring unemployed 0-3 year-olds do not receive benefits without having first worked for them.

In one of the most controversial measures, the Government will bring in compulsory work placements for 6 -18 month-olds, whereby unemployed babies who are judged to be failing in their efforts to find work will be given an “extra push”.

There will, however, be harsh sanctions for those infants who refuse to co-operate.

Those babies forced to take up Work Activity Placements will…

National Advocacy Weekend 2013: The Women United Will Never be Defeated

Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz

We mobilized over 50 activists from all around the country for our 2013 National Advocacy Weekend which took place from March 15-March 19 in Washington DC. Below is a video that highlights our experiences at NAW 2013.

Here is a reflection from one of the NAW participants:

I’m Christina from Boston, Massachusetts. I want to start off and say Thank You to everyone at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health for giving me the opportunity to attend the 2013 National Advocacy Weekend for the first time. Thank you for allowing me to have a first-hand account on what real lobbying is like.

Prior to lobbying on March 18, 2013 for Immigrant Women’s Healthcare, Immigration Reform and Affordable Abortion Access, I had only participated in drop off visits. I never fully experienced lobbying for a cause that is dear to me. I felt very excited to be there, even if…

Desertification Iowa Style and the Decline of the Monarch

by Michael Tobis

What we’re seeing here in the United States is a very precipitous decline of monarchs that’s coincident with the adoption of Roundup-ready corn and soybeans. The first ones were introduced in 1997, soybeans first, then corn. By 2003, 2004, the adoption rate was approaching 50 percent, The use of Roundup ‘has effectively eliminated milkweed from almost all of the habitat monarchs used to use.’ and then we really began to see a decline in monarchs. And the reason is that the most productive habitat for monarch butterflies in the Midwest, in the Corn Belt, was the corn and soybean fields [where milkweed, which monarchs feed on, grew]. Before Roundup-ready crops, weed control was accomplished by running a tiller through those fields and chopping up the weeds and turning over the soil, but not affecting…
