Raw milk dairy in Washington state issues recall over E. coli | OregonLive.com

A raw milk dairy in Washington state has issued a recall over over E. coli contamination.

Pure Éire dairy is pulling all of its organic milk with a best-by date of June 8 and later after routine tests turned up E. coli O157:H7, according to a release on the company’s website.

The milk was sold in

half gallon glass and plastic containers and 1 gallon plastic containers in stores in College Place,

Ephrata, Kettle Falls, Kennewick, Moses Lake, Pasco, Richland, Spokane, Spokane Valley,

Walla Walla and West Richland.

Raw milk products, which are licensed in Washington state, have been linked to successive recalls. In February, the Washington state Department of Agriculture warned the public against consuming raw milk from Dungeness Valley Creamery over possible E. coli contamination.

“Outrageous” Plan would lift most remaining wolf protections in Lower 48 states | OregonLive.com

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that those populations are robust enough to stave off extinction.

Federal protections would remain only for a fledgling population of Mexican gray wolves in the desert Southwest.

Some prominent scientists and dozens of lawmakers in Congress want broader protections to remain in place so wolves can expand, including in the Northeast and along the West Coast.

USDA Trade Mission Aims to Create Opportunities for U.S. Agriculture in Turkey | USDA Newsroom – Occupy Turkey-ignore unrest for profit?

Strange – that someone did not think to delay the trip or at least not issue a gushing press release that supports Turkey while it is crushing protests!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced that Acting Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse is leading a mission to promote U.S. agricultural exports to Turkey, this week. Representatives from Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania, as well as 20 U.S. companies are participating.

During the mission, the USDA delegation will travel to Istanbul and Ankara to learn about Turkey’s rapidly evolving market conditions and business environment – information that will enable businesses to develop export strategies for Turkey. Companies attending the Turkey trade mission represent a wide variety of agricultural products including dry beans, fruit and nuts, agricultural machinery and more.

“People around the world continue to demand U.S. food and agricultural products, boosting American businesses and supporting our rural communities,” said Scuse. “By participating in this trade mission, U.S. agribusinesses will gain first-hand market information and meet with distributors, importers and other business contacts so they can position themselves to expand their presence in Turkey by promoting the quality, variety and reliability of U.S. food and agricultural products.”

With its rapidly developing economy and expanding middle class, Turkey is becoming a key market for U.S. food and agricultural products. U.S. agricultural exports to the country tripled over the last decade. In fiscal year 2012, two-way agricultural trade between the two countries reached more than $2.4 billion, with U.S. exports accounting for more than 75 percent of the total – a significant contribution to the U.S. agricultural trade surplus.

After Deportation to Tijuana, Many Lives Quickly Slide Into Despair | Fronteras Desk

TIJUANA, Mexico — Last year the Obama administration deported 400,000 people from the United States, many sent to border cities like Tijuana. They’re often dropped off with little money, few belongings and no ties to the city. Once there, many lives quickly slide into desperation.

Juan Manuel Alvarez is 25. On a recent afternoon he was walking through Tijuana’s red light district, where he tries to make a living shining shoes. Other than his tattered clothes, his one possession is his shoe shiner’s kit, which he carries everywhere. His fingernails are perpetually stained with black polish.

Alvarez was deported from the U.S. last year, and since then, he’s been stranded in Tijuana, living in a shelter a short walk from the border, trying to collect enough for a bus ticket back to his hometown in Sinaloa. But the funds are scarce.

He pays for food and a bed at the shelter. And there are setbacks.

As we walked he told me he was recently picked up by police, taken to the station and told to shine the boots of 15 officers.

“Not a single one paid me,” he said, his eyes filling with tears and his voice with anger.

Like Alvarez, many recent deportees in Tijuana face frequent conflict with the municipal police in their daily struggle to eke out a living. It’s hard for many to come up with the 15 pesos each day — about a dollar — that it costs to stay at a shelter.

David Cameron to attend Bilderberg group meeting | World news | guardian.co.uk Conspiracy buff alert!

David Cameron is to attend the secretive Bilderberg group at the luxury Grove hotel in Watford on Friday evening, in a move that is likely to raise questions about his pledge to lead Britain’s most transparent government.

Downing Street said it was acting in an open manner by publicising the prime minister’s attendance in advance.

The PM’s spokesman, who said heads of government of countries hosting the annual Bilderberg meeting were usually invited to attend, said it would be a private event and that civil servants were not expected to attend.

No 10 is to clarify the position because ministers are usually expected to be accompanied by civil service note-takers when they meet business leaders. Henri de Castries, the chairman and CEO of the AXA Group, is the Bilderberg chairman.

The PM’s spokesman said: “He will participate in a discussion around domestic and global economic issues. He feels it is an opportunity to discuss economic issues with senior ministers, businesspeople and academics.”

Elderly Man Who Attempted Suicide At Today Show Says It Was Protest Against IRS: Gothamist – spin

This wasn’t the first time Pak has hurt himself in this manner in public: in August 1995, he cut off three of his fingers with a meat cleaver and tossed the digits into the crowd at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing.

Caliph Erdoğan demands end to Turkey protests | News | World | Mail & Guardian

Addressing supporters at Istanbul airport from an open-top bus after returning from a trip to north Africa, Erdoğan called on his ruling party faithful to show restraint and distance themselves from “dirty games” and “lawless protests”.

Despite earlier comments suggesting he could be softening his stance, Erdoğan was in combative mood. “These protests that are bordering on illegality must come to an end immediately,” he said.

Erdoğan’s reaction has been seen as decisive in determining whether the demonstrations fizzle out or rage on. Even as he spoke, thousands of protesters were rallying in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, some of them chanting “Tayyip resign” while others sang and danced.

Back at the airport Erdoğan’s supporters were equally defiant. “Those who raise their hands against the police should have their hands broken,” they chanted.

Bikinis banned at Miss World pageant in Indonesia

Miss World contestants will not wear bikinis when they vie for the pageant’s crown in Indonesia this September to avoid causing offence in the world’s most populous Muslim country.

Miss World organisers said the 137 women in the competition will instead wear one-piece swimwear, some of which will also have sarongs over the top.

“This is perfectly reasonable in a country that prefers one-piece swimwear,” London-based Miss World Organisation chairman Julia Morley told Reuters on Thursday.

Ms Morley denied suggestions the decision to ditch bikinis was made after local complaints about the contest.

Turkey, the Arab world, and the myth of moderate Islamism

Nervana

For years, Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan was generally considered an example of “moderate Islamism,” a loose label that was generally based on a comparison with other Islamist dictatorships like Iran, or with the various semi-secular autocratic regimes that dot the Arab and Muslim world. There was never a comparison with a liberal Muslim democracy, simply because none existed.

In other words, Erdogan earned his credential as the moderate, Islamist democrat in the Middle East, partly because of his success in Turkey, but also due to the lack of any democratic competitors. Admittedly, it was not just the West that labeled Erdogan as a “moderate,” but this pseudo concept was also popular in the Arab and Muslim world. A mixture of glamorous soap operas, exotic cities and beaches, and vibrant economic growth has led many Arabs to build a very idealistic image of Muslim Turkey.

On 27 May, this mirage was…
