Free school meals leave 21 children dead in India | News | DW.DE | 17.07.2013

Another 30 children are still being treated in the hospital in the state capital Patna, state education minister P K Shahi said, adding that an investigation into the incident was underway.

The children, aged between eight and 11, fell ill around midday on Tuesday soon after eating the free school lunch in the village of Masrakh, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Patna.

The meal of lentils and rice was reportedly cooked in the school kitchen. Preliminary investigations suggest the meal may have contained traces of insecticide.

‘Fake’ iPhone charger cited in electrocution death probe | South China Morning Post

A woman killed by an electric shock while using her iPhone may have been using a non-Apple-made battery charger at the time of her death, Chinese state media reported.

The victim, 23-year-old Ma Ailun, had been using what appeared to be an unauthorised iPhone 4 charger, CCTV reported on Tuesday. According to Xiang Ligang, a telecommunications expert interviewed by CCTV, the charger Ma had been using may have been a “knockoff”‘ – a fake.

“Knockoff chargers sometimes cut corners,” Xiang said. “The quality of the capacitor and circuit protector may not be good, and this may lead to the capacitor breaking down and sending 220 volts of electricity directly into the cell phone battery.”

Honduran Army Kills Indigenous Leader of COPINH Who Resisted Dam in Rio Blanco

On Monday July 15th, while the Lenca community of Rio Blanco, in Honduras, marked 106 days of resistance to the building of Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam, the Army indiscriminately shot at the demonstrators killing one of the leaders of the resistance, Tomas Garcia, and seriously injuring his son (photo).

Tomas was a Lenca indigenous leader who was part of his community’s Indigenous and Auxiliary Council and of the National Council of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH).

The Honduran activist was shot dead while he was walking with other community members to the project’s facilities owned by Desa and Sinohydro companies, while his son, who was seriously injured by a high-calibre bullet, is in hospital and his life is in danger, Berta Caceres, leader of COPINH, told Real World Radio.

Israel demolishes Bedouin village for 53rd time | Maan News Agency

“It is the 53rd demolition since July 2010,” Araqib chieftain Sheikh Sayyah Abu Mdeighim told Ma’an.

“They have brought down all the sheds we built for the summer so we can protect our land and defend ourselves against the oppressive policy of this tyrannical government.”

Large numbers of Israeli police officers and officials from Israel’s Land Authority accompanied the bulldozers.

Families in Araqib managed to re-build five of the sheds after the bulldozers left, Abu Mdeighim said, with Palestinian and Israeli activists due to visit to the village to help rebuild the rest of the structures.

On Monday, thousands of people demonstrated across Israel and Palestine to protest a controversial plan which would see the forced displacement of nearly 40,000 Bedouins in the Negev.

The Israeli government approved the Prawer-Begin plan in 2011, in what it says was an attempt to address the problem of unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev desert of southern Israel.

The 2011 proposal was formulated without any consultation with the Bedouin community and rights groups slammed it as a major blow to Bedouin rights.

According to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, the plan will forcibly evict nearly 40,000 Bedouins and destroy their communal and social fabric, condemning them to a future of poverty and unemployment.

Israel refuses to recognize 35 Bedouin villages in the Negev, which collectively house nearly 90,000 people.

The Israeli state denies them access to basic services and infrastructure, such as electricity and running water, and refuses to place them under municipal jurisdiction.

Drunk Man Accidentally Shoots Himself In Head With Friend’s Gun: LAist

An intoxicated 38-year-old man accidentally shot himself to death early Monday morning with his friend’s gun.

Sgt. Peter Gamino of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollenbeck Station told City News Service the man was at a friend’s house in the 3200 block of Folsom Street in Boyle Heights when the host felt compelled to show off his gun during a party. Guests passed around the weapon, and when it ended up in the hands of one man, the homeowner decided to try to take the gun away from him.

During the struggle, the drunk man shot himself in the eye. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators were examining the deceased man’s hands as well as the host’s to confirm the story. The L.A. Times says guests immediately called 9-1-1 and stayed for questioning. It is unclear if charges will be filed.
