The Muslim Brotherhood’s Final Card? – Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East
Wael Nawara places the blame for the violence on the “scorched earth” policy of the Muslim Brotherhood, not the Egyptian government, and warns that the conflict is not over:
“While many Brotherhood leaders are safely hiding far from the martyrdom they had so poetically described to their supporters, we should not expect the end of this conflict any time soon. The Muslim Brotherhood elements all over the country are playing what could perhaps be their final cards. Spreading chaos and pushing the country into civil war. Toward that end, they are bringing out all their tricks. The sectarian card started with burning churches and Christian missionary schools, attacking shops and Christians’ homes in Upper Egypt, hoping to start wide sectarian battles. Another important card is the collapse of security. To achieve that, Muslim Brotherhood members and Islamists have managed so far to storm several police stations, releasing prisoners and stealing arms. The government response was to impose a state of emergency and night curfew for a month.”

Cyclist “Run Over By Cab” On Broadway And East 4th Street: Gothamist
A reader sent us photographs of an incident that happened last night: A cyclist was hit and apparently run over by a cab just after 7 p.m. at Broadway and East 4th Street in Manhattan.
The tipster told us, “I’m kind of in shock so you’re gonna have to get details from someone else, but I just witnessed this guy get pulled under a cab… According to witnesses the cabbie was clearly at fault.” He added that he wasn’t sure whether the cab driver was at fault, because he didn’t see the street lights, “I only saw the actual collision and the aftermath.”
The FDNY confirmed that a male cyclist in his 20s was hit by a cab (they received the call at 7:05 p.m. and were there three minutes later, taking him to the hospital at 7:23 p.m.). The NYPD didn’t have any details; keep in mind, the NYPD only investigates incidents where victims are likely to die or are critically injured.

The Kingdom of Cambodia’s Ministry of Health reported two new human cases of H5N1 avian influenza, the 15th and 16th cases of 2013, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.
The 15th case was in a nine-year-old boy from the Damnak Dangkor Village in the Battambang province. The boy carried dead and sick chickens and ducks from a cage for food preparation before becoming sick. He developed fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and dyspnea, and is now in stable condition after hospitalization and treatment with Tamiflu.
The 16th case was in a five-year-old girl from Knong Prek Village in the Kandal province. There were recent deaths among poultry in her village which may have caused her infection.
The girl developed fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea and dyspnea. She was hospitalized and treated with Tamiflu, and is currently in critical condition.

Photos: Hopper’s “Nighthawks” Comes To Life In Flatiron Building: Gothamist
Last night The Whitney unveiled and lit up their life-size 3D installation of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks “painting. As we noted yesterday, the famous work features a 1940s diner which never actually existed, but the museum claims it was inspired by the Flatiron building (the two have similar shapes), where their installation is housed.

Energy Bars of the Sea | Earthjustice
Packed with solar energy they absorbed from eating plankton, the forage fish are delicious to just about everything bigger than themselves. As Earthjustice attorney Andrea Treece describes, they are “wheaties for whales and powerbars for pinnipeds (seals and sea lions).”
They are the ocean’s larder and, says Treece, “Salmon, tuna, swordfish, halibut and even humpback whales need a fully stocked pantry to survive.”
Problem is, these same forage fish are being overfished to feed land-based creatures, bringing Earthjustice into the fight to keep the ocean well-stocked. To understand the role forage fish play, a little ocean ecology is helpful.
