Week 33: A Few Thoughts. Rabaa

Nervana

Raba’a el-Adawyia, an Arab girl born in Iraq in a humble background was the fourth born child in her family, so her dad named her Rabaa, or fourth in Arabic. Rabaa was known for her ascetic life and for her Sufi poems.

In Egypt, there is a mosque named after Raba’a al-Adawyia that is situated in a square in Nasr city, a suburb of Cairo. On June 28, the pro-Morsi supporters picked this square for their sit-in; an encampment that continued for 7 weeks until the Egyptian police ruthlessly end it on Black Wednesday.  The crackdown, understandably, has created a shock wave around the globe. The images of the dead victims (more than 600) have rightly trigged a sense of disgust and outrage.  August 14 will be marked forever as a black, shameful day in the history of Egypt.

David Cameron’s back complains about having to support a ‘phenomenally bad Prime Minister’

Pride's Purge

(satire?)

In a frank interview, David Cameron’s back has told the BBC it is suffering from severe problems with having to constantly support a “phenomenally bad Prime Minister“.

In the interview – which was recorded several days ago on the Scottish island of Jura where the Cameron family has been on holiday – Mr Cameron’s spine said it was unhappy at being expected to be perpetually behind the PM no matter how rubbish he clearly was at running the country.

And in a tweet, Mr Cameron’s backbone later revealed that the prime minister could have chosen to have had an injection of competence last week but decided instead he would wait to see if his painful fecklessness eased naturally.

Mr Cameron’s back has been holidaying in the inner Hebrides with the Prime Minister’s bottom and neck – both of which have been confirmed as sources of…

AFRICA/EGYPT – 58 churches destroyed. “But it is not a war between Christians and Muslims”, says the spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops – Fides News Agency

58 churches and Christian institutions were attacked and set on fire in Egypt in past days. This was reported to Fides Agency by Fr. Rafic Greiche, spokesman of the Catholic Bishops of Egypt. “Out of 58 churches attacked 14 are Catholic, the rest belong to the Coptic Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant communities” says Fr. Greiche. “The attacks against the churches took place all over the Country, but are concentrated especially in the areas of Al Minya and Assiut, because it is there that we find the headquarters of the jihadists, responsible for this violence”, adds Fr. Greiche.

“It should be emphasized – the priest says – that Muslims who live in the vicinity of the affected churches have helped men and women religious to put out the fires of the religious buildings”.

“This is not a civil war between Christians and Muslims”, emphasizes Fr. Greiche. “It is not a civil war but a war against terrorism. And the majority of the population is against terrorism and religious extremism”, concludes Fr. Greiche. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 19/08/2013)

10 Things To Do During The Curfew

Posting a photo of a dessert that tasty and good looking is against the law in the state of mind I am in! Smile.

Egyptian Streets

The streets are empty,  shops are closed, the only souls on the streets are those of the Military. This isn’t a zombie invasion: this is a curfew.

Instead of being glued to your television sets, watching your favourite host reveal new information on the endless chaos Egypt is witnessing, there are many more ways to escape the politics and actually enjoy being stuck at home from 7pm each night. So, here are 10 things you can do to make the most of your long hours spent at home.

By Farah Khairat, contributor, EgyptianStreets.com

1.) Work out at home; now this might not sound like much fun, but since it’s summer and everyone slacks off during summer, this is a great way to get in shape while you have the time! Whether you have an Android or an iPhone, workout apps are available on both, or even just check a…

On-the-spot fines for being common or poor come into force

Mayor of New York considering similar offenses and fines!

Pride's Purge

(satire?)

Pedestrians and drivers spotted being poor or working class in public face on-the-spot fines from Friday and penalties for other offences – such as being a pleb – have increased. The new fines are part of changes giving the police powers to issue fixed-penalty notices for being inferior.

Under the changes, the penalty for driving without due fortune or breeding will be £100 with three points on the driver’s licence. More serious infringements – such as being unemployed or disabled – will continue to go through court, where peasants and chavs may face higher penalties.

The changes are intended to give the police greater flexibility in dealing with less well-connected offenders, freeing them from resource-intensive court processes by allowing them to abuse more unimportant people at will without recourse to the justice system.

However, drivers with reasonable accents will still be able to appeal against any decision in court although scousers…
