US (OR): Growing populations of brown marmorated stink bug could harm late-season crops

Cheap food from global sources has long term ill effects of global agriculture! Connect the dots – folks!

“Stink bugs in commercial crops can lead to increased management costs, pesticide use and outbreaks of secondary pests. There’s no question stink bugs could be an economic issue.”

A native of Southeast Asia, the brown marmorated stink bug arrived in the eastern United States in the late 1990s and has since spread to more than 30 states, reaching Oregon in 2004. The pest has damaged millions of dollars of crops on the East Coast.

(The professor means well and I am sure that under his definition, it would have little negative impact other than the energy and pollution needed to produce that materials to create the production facility.

Do humans really needed to fish for or factory produce shrimp to survive? Nope. Knowing what we now know about plants and proteins, there is next to no need to use agricultural land to feed animals to be eaten by humans and little to no need to expend the energy needed to fish the oceans, rivers and lakes to death.)

Missouri agriculture typically brings to mind corn, soybeans and cattle. But research at the University of Missouri could make seafood a major cash crop in the Show-Me State.

David Brune, a professor of agricultural systems management in the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, is developing a seafood production system that is sustainable, scalable and environmentally friendly.

America, Syria And All Those Arab Hypocrites

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

It’s funny how many people are suddenly against foreign interference in Syria. I’ve been wondering for the past week, as news of a possible American strike against Damascus surfaced, where all those people who cared about the sovereignty of Syria were for the past two years?

Arabs are interesting people. You only need to say America once in order to get them rallying behind their one common secondary enemy. The United States is the world’s biggest terrorist organization, some of them would say. You can sit back and laugh. The problem is that they firmly believe that the problem is actually the United States.

Media and people have rallied against any possible American strike, against the “imperialistic” regime that has targeted the countries of the Middle East for a long, long time. They started recalling Afghanistan and Iraq. They reminded people of the thousands who are dead because of this…

‘Never, ever give up’: Diana Nyad completes historic Cuba-to-Florida swim | Repeating Islands

On Monday, she became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a protective cage, willing her way to a Key West beach just before 2 p.m. ET, nearly 53 hours after jumping into the ocean in Havana for her fifth try in 35 years.Nyad pumped her fist as she walked onto the beach toward an awaiting medic before being guided to an ambulance.“I got three messages,” an exhausted and happy Nyad told reporters.“One is we should never ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team,” she said.

AFRICA/EGYPT – The Coptic Patriarchate: no one can justify war under the pretext of defending the Christians – Fides News Agency

“No one can justify military intervention in the Middle East under the pretext of defending the Christians. This is now valid in Syria. But even in the dramatic moment experienced by Egypt, the exploitation of those asking the international community to intervene under the guise of protecting the Christians, affected by the sectarian fanaticism must be rejected”. This is what was said to Fides Agency by Fr.Hani Bakhoum, secretary of the patriarchate of Alexandria of the Catholic Copts. “As Pope Francis said”, continues Father Hani “It will never be an armed intervention to open the path to true peace. War calls war, blood calls blood. Every action of that kind does nothing but worsen the situation”.

Even Christians in Egypt are preparing for the day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria proclaimed by Pope Francis for Saturday, September 7. Then, from 20 September to 15 October, the Coptic Catholic Patriarch Ibrahim Isaac Sidrak will visit some European countries with the aim to describe in a direct manner to Churches and local political classes the real dynamics of the Egyptian crisis and the criteria followed by the Christians in the convulsive phase experienced by the great North African Country. In his European tour, Patriarch Sidrak will visit Switzerland, France, Austria and Germany.

Week 35-A Few Thoughts. Egypt’s New Political Map

Nervana

Published in the Daily News Egypt

The political map of Egypt is slowly changing. As events continue to unfold following the June30 and then the July3 coup, there are emerging new realties that may have an impact the future of the country for years to come. Currently, however, there is nothing definitive or clear.

First, the ongoing crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood did not tame political Islam in Egypt. In fact, the opposite is true. Al-Azhar wants to be the sole guardian of Islam in Egypt, while the anti-Muslim brotherhood Salafis want to be the protector of the Sunni doctrine, and all the while the junta wants to enlist Islamism to serve their nationalist agenda.

Both al-Azhar figures and Salafis are passionately defending the army, but they are also defending the role of religion in the state. In their opinion, the religion should not be abused in politics, but it…

Femen founders flee Ukraine ‘fearing for their lives’ | News | DW.DE | 01.09.2013

On Tuesday, police said they found a handgun and a hand grenade during a search of Femen’s Kyiv office. Authorities had said they dispatched a group of explosives experts to the premises after an anonymous tip-off. Femen is now facing an official investigation.

The protest group said it possessed no weapons, and accused the authorities of planting the weapons in a bid to shut down the organization. Femen subsequently announced it was leaving its Kyiv office, saying they believed the building had been bugged by police.
