Why ObamaCare Matters to Me

Nuestra Vida, Nuestra Voz

By Jessica Karina Guerra-Ugalde

I was thrilled and honored to stand behind the President last week as he talked about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefits all of our communities.  Because of the immense pride I have in the ACA, I wanted to share my enrollment story and what it means to me.  I graduated college in 2008, and did what college kids throughout the country do after graduation – I moved home and began looking for work. I worked as an intern and later as a temp- both positions did not offer any benefits. At that point, I was 22 years old, and I really did not think that anything could affect me.  I was healthy and rarely got sick. Immediately after the ACA became law and was implemented, my mom went to her job to ensure that I was covered under her health insurance plan. A week after…

penned in moon dust

the beast below

It was long ago when the world was young. The Moon some say was bright and full once or twice a year but then she would be gone for weeks at a time.” My grandmother said with a quiet, serious voice.

I closed my eyes. Grandmother told great stories.

“There were fewer people, no one to protect our world or our universe.  I do not think when Mars chased Luna that he intended to sire a beast. But beast he was.”

“How can such silvery beauty as I spawn repulsion?” she screamed as she flung him into the abyss of night.

“I am sorry, Luna. Please forgive me” the love struck Mars pled.

“Our love created that foul thing. We cannot be together, ever.”

“So Mars retreated to his corner of the Solar System looking each evening for a glimpse just a whisper of her , his  dearest Luna.”

Hundreds Of Babies Potentially Exposed To Tuberculosis At Manhattan Hospital: Gothamist

St. Luke\’s-Roosevelt Hospital started contacting patients and parents yesterday to inform them that a maternity ward worker tested positive for tuberculosis, possibly inadvertently exposing hundreds of babies to the disease. \”We want to assure everyone that we are taking swift and comprehensive steps to address the situation,\” the hospital said in a statement. \“If you were recently a patient at Roosevelt Hospital and are not notified within the next few days, then you were not in contact with the infected staff member.\”

The employee hasn\’t been identified, and it\’s unclear how long the employee had it, but the parents who notified NBC about the infection gave birth more than two months ago. \”Few individuals exposed to someone with TB become infected because infection generally occurs after continuous exposure over several hours,\” the hospital added in the statement. \”Still, we are taking the extraordinary precautions that we have to address this issue.\”

Tuberculosis is an airborne bacterial infection that mostly affects the lungs; it is \”extremely curable\” if detected and treated. In June, it was reported that there was a TB outbreak in parts of The Bronx (Tremont and portions of the Crotona, Belmont and Claremont sections); in 2008, there was a TB case reported at a Brooklyn elementary school.

Food Stamp Cuts Set to Kick in Friday

More than 47 million Americans who receive food stamps will see their benefits go down starting Friday, just as Congress has begun negotiations on further cuts to the program.

Beginning in November, a temporary benefit from the 2009 economic stimulus that boosts food stamp dollars will no longer be available. According to the Agriculture Department, that means a family of four receiving food stamps will start receiving $36 less a month.

teabagger Alert!! – A “Not Conservative Enough” vison for America – ‘Republicans Find Themselves Facing New Attack Ad Created By Tea Party’

The Last Of The Millenniums

tea party stop the traitors

‘Tea Party Leaders Decide Enough Is Enough.
Just watch this new video from the Tea Party
Leadership Fund’:

‘Any Republican who did their job is on that list,
labelled as traitors’.

‘The Tea Party Leadership Fund (who notably
bankrolled Louie Gohmert and Allen West according
to Opensecrets.org) has now decided to finance
*any* candidate who runs against any ‘traitor’ who
did their jobs’.

  • ‘So, we can see more rape is “something that God intended to happen” and legitimate rape comments next year from the Tea Party’.
  • ‘We will get more pushes to bring back slavery alongside admission that voter suppression efforts target black people’.

‘The Tea Party has decided that they hate the
United States enough that they just want to burn it
down, and they intend to play fiddle while it
burns’.

Fact-Check: Changes & Improvements in the Individual Market Under the Affordable Care Act | The White House

(Read or listen to what people really say rather than what someone says they said – then decide what you think of it…)

There has been a lot of media attention, and some misleading attacks from critics, about some recent notices from insurance companies about changes in some people’s insurance plans.

Press Secretary Jay Carney took this question head-on yesterday. He made some key points:

More than three out of every four Americans gets insurance from their employer, Medicare, Medicaid and the Veterans Administration. These notices have been sent only to some of the 5% of Americans who get insurance on the individual insurance market.

Americans who are currently on the individual market stand to benefit the most from the Affordable Care Act. Even those receiving notices of “cancellation” will be able to enroll in a new plan that does not discriminate based on pre-existing conditions, does not deny them key benefits like maternity, mental health, or prescription drug coverage, and cannot drop you when you’re sick.

Americans in the individual market who have a plan that hasn’t been changed by their insurance company (an all-too-familiar occurrence for many) can keep their plan if they choose, even though a plan with better benefits is likely available.
