‘Could the next Google come from Africa?’ | World news | The Observer

Ghana is a country of technological contradictions. In many schools, IT is taught in classrooms with no electricity yet mobile penetration exceeds 100%. Tech start-ups are using the challenges and opportunities as a spring board and achieving way beyond expectation

Is English losing its appeal in China?: Shanghaiist

As elsewhere, as nationalism and right wing or conservative values grow, there are wannabe leaders who complain that they are losing their culture – you hear that in Japan, Hungary, Germany, France, Britain and other states.

“Recently, in fact, the former spokesman with the Ministry of Education posted comments on Weibo calling for English classes in elementary schools to be canceled so that there could be more time for Chinese lessons.

\”These years, so many people are learning English but our Chinese language proficiency is degrading quickly,\” one netizen said in response to the post.”

Settlers torch 2 cars in Hebron village, spray graffiti | Maan News Agency

Settlers torched two Palestinian cars in a Hebron village on Thursday, locals said.

A group of settlers from Kiryat Arba set fire to the vehicles, which belonged to brothers Abed al-Menm and Mohammad al-Salayma al-Jalajel.

The settlers also sprayed threatening graffiti in the village reading \”Good things are coming,\” apparently referring to future attacks being prepared by settlers, locals said.

Settlers routinely attack Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank with impunity.

Annual figures compiled by Israeli rights group Yesh Din have repeatedly shown that nine out of 10 police investigations about settler crimes fail to lead to a prosecution.

More than 500,000 Israeli settlers live in settlements across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in contravention of international law. The internationally recognized Palestinian territories of which the West Bank and East Jerusalem form a part have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

Vaccinate Your Children Against Polio Starting Tomorrow

No fooling around – you do not want to see your children with legs, arms, or lungs that do not work!

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

The Lebanese ministry of Public Health is starting a massive polio vaccination campaign tomorrow. As I’m currently rotating in pediatrics, I’ve seen a lot of parents who are unaware of the vaccine, who are having second thoughts about giving it to their children and who have not given the vaccine much thought to begin with.

Why You Should Care:

With the increasing influx of Syrian refugees, Lebanon is at an increased risk of a resurgence of diseases that we thought had long died off in the country, second to successful campaigns, such as polio.
Because the Syrian refugees in the country are uncontrolled, we cannot ascertain the disease load they’re bringing with them as as such we have to be extra careful with our children’s well being.

Poliomyelitis is a viral infection that can leave your kid paralyzed. Why take the risk?

If you can’t be an athlete…: Scenes from Ironman Florida 2013

Fit and Feminist

It was over a year ago that I started telling Brian that I thought he’d be into doing an Ironman one day.  He says I put the idea in his head, but I maintain that I was merely identifying a latent desire before he’d even been aware of it, but either way, he ended up signing up for Ironman Florida 2013, which was held this past Sunday in Panama City Beach.

Brian had spent five months training for IMFL, which not only encompassed hours on each discipline but also reading his copy of “Going Long” by Joe Friel until it was dog-eared and testing out every permutation of sports drink, meal replacement shake and granola bar known to cheerleading and mankind.  I gotta admit, it was really inspiring to have a front-row seat to such an intense level of focus and dedication. It really made me want to step up…

Renisha McBride, 19yr old, unarmed woman murdered IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE STAY THE COURSE

Tess Powell Out Loud

Renisha McBride, 19yr old, unarmed woman murdered (shot in back of head), early Saturday morning. Image
Police are not releasing the name of shooter and have further stated it appears to be self-defense. Also the police initially lied to family and told them her body was dumped there, rather than killed there.

I know the first question will be, what does this have to do with Boycotting Florida? This is happening all over the country.

However, it is impossible & impractical to boycott the entire country. Florida has had a disproportionate amount of racially profiled deaths of unarmed, innocent minorities. Trayvon Martin’s murder has been a catalyst in a resurgence of minority and decent people of other ethnic groups to fight these “legal lynchings”.
Boycotts are only effective when you zero in on one target, like Florida, because you can only make an example out of one area…
