Tory Incompetents and Thames bursts banks as Cameron calls UK floods ‘bibilical’ | News | DW.DE | 10.02.2014

Communities Minister Eric Pickles joined the attack, suggesting that the government had “perhaps relied too much on the Environment Agency’s advice” on flood prevention. Pickles, a member of Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party, told BBC TV that “we thought we were dealing with experts.”

On Monday, Chris Smith, the head of the Environment Agency, hit back and accused ministers of having held back vital funds. Smith, a former member of parliament for the Labour Party, said the Treasury had limited the amount the agency could spend on flood management in Somerset.

“When I hear someone criticizing the expertise and professionalism of my staff in the Environment Agency who know more about flood risk management – 100 times more about flood risk management – than any politician ever does, I am not going to sit idly by,” Smith said.

Pink Slime 2: Transformed Again! Cargill Adds ‘Textured Beef’ Wording to Labels

Cargill, one of the nation’s largest meatpackers, has added wording to its labels on ground beef packages that indicates whether the meat inside includes a product that’s been called “pink slime.”

Since Jan. 20, all of Cargill’s U.S.-produced, fresh, 100 percent ground beef products that contain what it calls “finely textured beef” will say so on a label, whether sold in bulk or in chubs directly to consumers, the company announced last week. Cargill had said in November that it would add the labeling, the Lincoln Journal Star said.

Cargill also said it has developed a website to answer questions about finely textured beef.

Another company that makes the textured beef product, Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based Beef Products Inc., sued ABC News in September 2012 after the organization aired a story that used the phrase “pink slime.” The company said the story mentioned only Beef Products Inc. and its product and misled consumers into believing the product is unhealthy and unsafe.

The company said it lost business and had to close plants in Texas, Kansas and Iowa. It kept open a Nebraska plant that is still running at reduced capacity, but Beef Products spokesman Jeremy Jacobsen told The Associated Press on Friday that the other plants remained closed.

An ABC attorney has said the network in each of its broadcasts stated that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration deemed the product safe to eat and that the coverage never suggested the product was unsafe.

Beef Products is seeking $1.2 billion in damages from ABC, ABC staffers, and scientists who criticized the product.

Jacobsen said his company has been encouraging its customers to add labeling similar to Cargill’s.

Woody Allen pulls out the tired “woman scorned” defense

Being predatory toward a 20 year old is obviously not the same as sexually abusing a seven year old, but it’s certainly not irrelevant to how we should judge Allen’s credibility as he returns to his tried and true defense: that Mia is the one manipulating her kids. I’ll give the final word to the judge who in no uncertain terms lambasted Allen’s skills as a father 20 years ago: ”Mr. Allen’s resort to the stereotypical ‘woman scorned’ defense is an injudicious attempt to divert attention from his failure to act as a responsible adult and parent.”

Federal officials to evict bird species from Columbia River islands | KREM.com Spokane

Bad joke, oxymoron, dumb idea? All of the above – The Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation knows how to conserve fish or manage birds?

Federal officials plan to evict Caspian terns from two Columbia River man-made islands to protect endangered salmon and steelhead.

The Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation believe that if they can get the salmon-eating birds to stop nesting on the islands, they will find new nesting areas outside the Columbia River Basin.

A media source reports the two islands in the plan are Goose Island is in Potholes Reservoir near Moses Lake, and Crescent Island, created from dredged material, is in the Columbia River about nine miles south of the confluence with the Snake River near Wallulla.

According to data collected from fish tags that litter the island after birds digest the fish, about 370 pairs of terns nesting on Goose Island feasted on 14.6 percent of inland Columbia Basin steelhead from 2007 to 2009.

A quick mea culpa

Fit and Feminist

For a writer, getting a lot of exposure can be a double-edged sword. It brings you into contact with more people than before, and while that is something a lot of us desire, it can come with some pretty gnarly stuff.

That’s exactly what happened over the past few days.  I wrote something that got a lot of attention, and I handled some of that attention in ways I am not very proud of.  The situation has been upsetting to me, not because of the things people have said to me, but because of the way I reacted.  I have made an effort over the past two years of operating this blog to try to cultivate a space that is above the usual din of discourse on the internet, and for the most part I think I – with the help of the regular readers and commenters of this blog…

Labour MP apologises for Holocaust remark | Politics | theguardian.com

When in doubt – accuse the victim or defender of the victim of being a victimizer… this kind of trying to avoid today’s realities by burying it in the past, is wearing thin. The world weeps over the genocide of the Armenians, Jews in Europe and Russia, Cambodia, Darfur and prays that a similar fate is not visited upon Palestinians.

“Of course, many millions perished. It is quite strange that some of the people who are running the state of Israel seem to be quite complacent and happy to allow the same to happen in Gaza.”

Her words drew sharp condemnation from the chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, Karen Pollock.

“We expect our politicians to speak responsibly and sensitively about the past and about events today,” she said. “These lazy and deliberate distortions have no place in British politics.”

Qureshi, the MP for Bolton South East, said she had not intended to draw a direct parallel and felt “personally hurt” that anyone could think she had done – especially as she had visited one of the most notorious death camps.

“The debate was about the plight of the Palestinian people and in no way did I mean to equate events in Gaza with the Holocaust,” she said in a statement. “I apologise for any offence caused.

“I am also personally hurt if people thought I meant this. As someone who has visited the crematoria and gas chambers of Auschwitz I know the Holocaust was the most brutal act of genocide of the 20th century and no one should seek to underestimate its impact.”

Pollock said: “Whilst current events in the Middle East understandably stir emotions, it is astonishing to think that anyone could visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, learn about the industrial nature of the Nazis’ murderous regime, even walk through a gas chamber – and then make these offensive and inappropriate comparisons.”
