Vietnamese gov’t urges drastic measures as avian flu breaks out in eight provinces – Xinhua | English.news.cn

In less than three weeks, Vietnamese Prime Minister (PM) has urgently issued two dispatches to authorities at all levels from ministries to sectors and localities over the spread of the disease.

Accordingly, in the latest message sent earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urged the establishment of inspection teams to promote anti-bird flu efforts at localities, especially those vulnerable to the epidemic.

The dispatch requested the minister of MARD, who is also the head of the National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Prevention and Control, to take immediate action to prevent the transfer of avian flu to human.

So far this year, Vietnam has reported two cases of human death from A/H5N1 avian flu in southern Binh Phuoc and Dong Thap provinces.

The prime minister urged competent agencies to take samples of poultry at markets to detect avian influenza in a swift manner, while also closely inspecting poultry trading in each locality, reported Vietnam’s state-run news agency.

The World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization have also warned about the risk of A/H7N9 avian flu penetrating Vietnam through northern provinces.

Kafana Samtan Campaign to Restore Al-Saeh Library a Success

It is great that progress has been made and still shameful that power wannabes – trashed the library and used a falsehood to justify their acts meant to impress – NO ONE!

Hummus For Thought

When unknown assailants torched his library on January 3, Father Ibrahim Sarrouj responded by forgiving them. The assailants, supposedly Muslim fundamentalists, accused Father Sarrouj of attacking Islam by publishing a pamphlet claiming that Abu Bakr, Islam’s first caliph, once beat Muhammad’s wife Aisha with a newspaper.

The library in question is Tripoli’s famed Al-Saeh Library, Lebanon’s second largest and home to over 80,000 books of all kind. Despite security forces being notified that Father Ibrahim Sarrouj had been threatened by religious extremists, the library was still badly damaged. No one knows exactly how many books were destroyed, but it is estimated that the number may be as high as two thirds.

The irony is that not only did Father Sarrouj never write such a pamphlet – his library contained and still contains numerous priceless Islamic books – but the supposed event…

Cameron ‘forgets’ to apply for EU money to help flood victims

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the Tories!)

Out of all the many blunders committed by the government so far in its response to the devastating flooding, surely forgetting to apply for cash for the flood victims from the EU’s Solidarity Fund has got to be the biggest.

In 2007, the UK received £127m from the EU to help flood victims after the devastating flooding during the summer. But this time the government hasn’t even applied for the money.

EU governments have 10 weeks to apply for the cash – which means it’s already too late to claim for money to help the first victims of the flooding, some of whom were affected as far back as last November.

Of course, some very, very cynical people might say the government hasn’t forgotten to claim the money at all – Cameron just decided it wouldn’t be politically comfortable to be seen to be getting…

Old Photos Surface Showing Breitbart, O’Keefe Hobnobbing with White Nationalists | Hatewatch

Photographs published this week by an anti-racist website show the late Andrew Breitbart, a leading figurehead among mainstream conservatives, and his onetime protégé James O’Keefe – whose undercover videos are credited with causing the demise of the community organizing group ACORN – rubbing elbows with young white nationalists at two different right-wing conferences.

The pictures are noteworthy because Breitbart, who died of a heart attack in March 2012, and O’Keefe had been adamant that they had nothing to do with the conference attendees – and vocally attacked anyone who suggested otherwise.

Instead, the photos published by the anti-racist organization One People’s Project showed O’Keefe posing with numerous members of the white-nationalist group Youth for Western Civilization at a forum organized by the Robert Taft Club. Another shot shows Breitbart hobnobbing with YWC leader Matthew Heimbach, who has recently came out as a full-fledged Nazi, at an Americans for Prosperity gathering.

Story-telling illustrations by Emilie Sarnel – The Fox Is Black

STORY-TELLING ILLUSTRATIONS BY EMILIE SARNEL

Emilie Sarnel illustrates pinup girls, anthropomorphic food items, wolves with attitude, and tropical countries using bold black lines and bright pops of colour. Her style is sharp and geometric while still retaining a nice handmade touch. She’s not afraid of using large swaths of starkly contrasting black and white, though there are some illustrations in full neon palettes. Her projects beyond illustration include food packaging, product design and city guides. All of Emilie’s work looks like there’s a personal story behind it.

Emilie is a French designer who has lived in Hong Kong for the past two years. In these two years she has had three solo shows, a group show and started her own creative studio called Pleaseconfirm Ltd. It’s clear to me that Emilie has a definitive style but is still experimenting through taking on personal projects and trying mixed media.

France Wants ‘Homemade’ Back on the Menu

Dad – where does food come from – the microwave?

A new law would let restaurants label a dish “fait maison” — homemade — only when it’s made in-house from fresh ingredients. Supporters say the law could create jobs by encouraging a return to traditional restaurant cooking.

At a time of economic crisis and with high restaurant taxes, though, more and more French chefs are tempted to resort to pre-packed food to cut costs.

“There are price consequences, and consequences on service,” said Bernard Auboyneau, owner of Bistro Paul Bert in in the trendy 11th arrondissement of Paris. “It’s obvious that industrial or prepared food can count on an astounding future.”

Kansas anti-gay segregation bill is an abomination.

If that sounds overblown, consider the bill itself. When passed, the new law will allow any individual, group, or private business to refuse to serve gay couples if “it would be contrary to their sincerely held religious beliefs.” Private employers can continue to fire gay employees on account of their sexuality. Stores may deny gay couples goods and services because they are gay. Hotels can eject gay couples or deny them entry in the first place. Businesses that provide public accommodations—movie theaters, restaurants—can turn away gay couples at the door. And if a gay couple sues for discrimination, they won’t just lose; they’ll be forced to pay their opponent’s attorney’s fees. As I’ve noted before, anti-gay businesses might as well put out signs alerting gay people that their business isn’t welcome.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to barring all anti-discrimination lawsuits against private employers, the new law permits government employees to deny service to gays in the name of “religious liberty.” This is nothing new, but the sweep of Kansas’ statute is breathtaking. Any government employee is given explicit permission to discriminate against gay couples—not just county clerks and DMV employees, but literally anyone who works for the state of Kansas. If a gay couple calls the police, an officer may refuse to help them if interacting with a gay couple violates his religious principles. State hospitals can turn away gay couples at the door and deny them treatment with impunity. Gay couples can be banned from public parks, public pools, anything that operates under the aegis of the Kansas state government.
