Infections Linked to Chinese Seafood Markets in New York – NYTimes.com

At least 30 people have contracted a rare skin infection after buying seafood at markets in Chinese neighborhoods across New York City, prompting health officials to issue a warning to consumers and market workers to take precautions when handling raw or live fish.

The source of the outbreak was unclear, but health officials said that all of the people who were infected had bought fish at markets in Sunset Park, Brooklyn; Flushing, Queens; or Chinatown, in Manhattan.

There was no evidence that eating fish from any of those markets could cause illness, officials said.

“People are encouraged to wear waterproof gloves in their home when preparing live or raw fish or seafood that came from a market in Chinatown, especially if they have cuts or abrasions,” the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement.

Iran’s four-part plan for a political solution in Syria – Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

The best approach to a political solution in Syria lies in addressing both the threat of international terrorism and the urgent humanitarian crisis, as well as a national and international process leading to a direct vote by the Syrian people, according to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein-Amir Abdollahian.

The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission Responds to the Shooting of Kriston Charles Belinte Chee | Native News Online

The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission office issued a news released after learning of Kriston Chee’s death and Quadlin’s claim of self defense.

Leonard Gorman, NNHRC Executive Director states:

“Claim of self defense are very subjective. Based on the recent Florida cases (Zimmerman and Dunn), it is clear that no duty to retreat is confusing and require substantial investigation.”

“It’s disappointing to learn that Mr. Chee’s family is left with the notion that his death is okay, no crime committed,” Gorman further stated.

The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission is at dismayed by the quick ruling and acceptance of self defense. When a person’s life is taken the remaining family members deserve a full investigation.

Maricopa County is currently investigating this case to determine if charges should be filed against Quadlin. The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission will be following the outcome and results of the investigation.

Eat Drink Better | Healthy recipes, good food: sustainable eats for a healthy lifestyle!

Calling all Atkins, Paleo, and standard American diet eaters — listen up! ‘More animal protein’ does not mean ‘more health and happiness.’ According to a study published Tuesday in Cell Metabolism, people who consume lots of animal protein in their middle years should instead expect it to mean ‘more cancer, diabetes, and premature mortality.’

Want power – so jump on anti-gay bandwagon, then run people’s lives! allAfrica.com: Kenya: Anti-Gay Groups in Campaign to ‘Prevent Sodom’

Several lobby groups have launched a campaign against homosexuality. They want the government to declare it a crime. The groups yesterday kicked off the ‘Zuia Sodom Kabisa’ (Prevent Sodom Completely) petition to collect a million signatures against homosexuality in Kenya.

The groups include the Save Our Men Initiative, Maendeleo ya Wanaume, the Kikuyu Council of Elders, religious groups and professionals. “The support the homosexual community is getting from Western governments like the Netherlands, USA and Germany has given homosexuals boldness that borders on intimidation for the few voices of reason that are standing against their onslaught,” said Peter Munga, the chairman of Mandate Initiative.

Munga said the “vocal and incessant support” homosexuals are getting from US President Barack Obama is worrying. Save Our Men’s Jasiel Njau said Uganda has been threatened with Western aid cuts for outlawing homosexuality “based on scientific-cultural facts and sound moral considerations”.

Egypt and Gaza

Nervana

This piece is published in Daily News Egypt

Last Friday, a small group of Palestinians protested near the Egyptian border demanding the opening of the Rafah border. Their congregation ended uneventfully, however, it highlights a brewing crisis between post-Morsi Egypt and the Hamas government in Gaza that can easily explode at any time soon. Moreover, Tony Blair, the special envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East arrived in Cairo on Monday in his second visit in 2014. The two events may not be directly related, but it is plausible that Gaza will be on the agenda of his meeting with the Egyptian officials.

In 2008, a group of Palestinians blew up the wall separating the Egyptian Rafah side from the Palestinian side in protest of the isolation of the Gaza strip. Thousands of Palestinians streamed into Sinai, and stayed for several days before the Egyptian authorities took control…

America Is Ready to Elect Its Fourth-Most-Popular Recent First Lady as President – The Wire

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Two new polls tossed onto the already putrefying pile of 2016 surveys offer good news for Hillary Clinton. A majority of Americans want her to run in 2016 and most people don’t see her gender or husband as disqualifying. Hell, nearly a fifth of people under the age of 30 think Clinton’s not even 50 years old. Good news all around.

Disney to End Support for Boy Scouts of America Over Ban on Gay Leaders | News | PND

The Walt Disney Company will end its support for the Boy Scouts of America in 2015 because of the organization’s membership policy that bans gay leaders, CNN reports.

Disney’s VoluntEARS program, through which Disney employees can convert volunteer hours to cash donations for the charities of their choice, will no longer allow employees to direct funds to the Boy Scouts, the entertainment conglomerate told CNN. Disney does not directly support the national BSA organization or local councils.

According to Disney’s charitable giving guidelines, organizations that “discriminate in the provision of services unlawfully or in a manner inconsistent with Disney’s policies on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, marital status, mental or physical ability, or sexual orientation” are ineligible to receive funds. While BSA voted last May to allow openly gay youths to join its ranks starting this year, it maintains its ban on gay adult leaders.
