UK pay rises – nurses: 1%, MPs: 11%, bankers: 35%

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today!)

The government has just announced an average increase of 0%-1% in pay for doctors, nurses and other public sector workers:

Pay decisions announced for NHS staff and other public sector workers

This comes after bankers got an average of 35% (not even including their bonuses) and MPs gave themselves an 11% pay rise:

Interestingly, the police got nothing at all.

Punishment for plebgate perhaps?

Lebanon featured in All Love is Equal | Interview

Hummus For Thought

gl_52aff93f-4f2c-47c5-86f9-211e0af4b6c2 The Lebanese picture that was featured in Braden Summer’s “All Love is Equal” Photoshoot

A couple of weeks ago, we were all surprised to see that Lebanon was among the locations used by Braden Summers in his “All Love is Equal” photoshoot showcasing 15 LGBT couples from around the world. The Lebanese one features two beautiful women modeling as a Lesbian couple in a traditional Lebanese house. I was curious to know more about it so I got a hold of Braden and asked him a couple of questions.

How did you come up with the idea of All Love is Equal and what are you hoping to achieve with it?

“All Love is Equal” is a photographic series that challenges the social construct of “iconic romance.” It is meant to call attention to the lack of commercial imagery that focuses on the idealization of same-sex couples. A…

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | She Is …

She is …

Not to be sold, used or exchanged,

Not a piece of paper or clean, white fabric to become soiled.

Put yourself in her place,

just for an hour. Wear the burqa.

Walk on Kabul’s streets. Feel

how difficult it is to be an Afghan woman. Think

about those days when you harassed her for no logical reason.

She is not a commodity to be hidden,

New Hampshire Is On Track to Repeal the Death Penalty – The Wire

Three House members whose relatives had been murdered maintained their support for the bill. Rep. Renny Cushing, whose father and brother-in-law were killed in separate incidents, said, “If we let those who kill turn us into killers then evil triumphs, violence triumphs and things just get worse.”

Manufactured ignorance » Butterflies and Wheels

This is a subject that has always interested me – agnotology, the study of the cultural production of ignorance.

It’s a rich field, especially today when whole industries devote themselves to sowing public misinformation and doubt about their products and activities.

The tobacco industry was a pioneer at this. Its goal was to erode public acceptance of the scientifically proven links between smoking and disease: In the words of an internal 1969 memo legal opponents extracted from Brown & Williamson’s files, “Doubt is our product.” Big Tobacco’s method should not be to debunk the evidence, the memo’s author wrote, but to establish a “controversy.”

He was with three other Navajo code talkers, and yet, in all the mainstream press coverage of the event no one mentioned he was the former Navajo Nation Chairman, serving an unprecedented four terms from 1971 to 1989 before being convicted on federal racketeering and fraud charges. “Big Mac” as he was known on the Navajo Nation, spent eight years in federal prison before finally receiving a pardon by President Clinton in 2001.

Why New York City Streets Keep Exploding, and You Can’t Predict Where’s Next – The Wire

The explosion in Harlem on Wednesday that leveled two buildings and killed at least two people was only the latest deadly explosion in New York City in recent years. While the reason the buildings blew up isn’t yet known, there’s good reason to consider old, cast-iron gas lines a primary suspect. Those gas lines run throughout the city, and — not to be alarmist! — could fail at any time.

In 2007, 69-year-old Kunta Oza was killed when her house in Sunnyside, Queens exploded. That explosion was traced back to a break in a gas main in the street outside — as the Daily News reported,  “an 80-year-old cast-iron gas main.”

Both the age and composition of that main are significant. In a remarkable bit of timing, the Center for an Urban Future released a report this week detailing the age of various parts of New York City’s infrastructure, and it included a look at the aging natural gas network. In the area of Wednesday’s blast — 116th and Park Avenue — the gas provider is Con Edison. According to the CUF report, Con Edison’s network has a number of trouble spots.

Stop The GOP Lies – ‘Dexter cancer patient who called health care ‘unaffordable’ will save more than $1K’

The Last Of The Millenniums

And of course by saving her over $1000, she doesn’t like the new plan.

Why?

According to Julie….”It’s Obama’s fault.”

Washington— ‘A Dexter cancer patient featured in a conservative group’s TV ad campaign denouncing her new health care coverage as “unaffordable” will save more than $1,000 this year’.

‘Julie Boonstra, 49, starred last month in an emotional television ad sponsored by Americans for Prosperity that implied Democratic U.S. Rep. Gary Peters’ vote for the Affordable Care Act made her medication so “unaffordable” she could die. Peters of Bloomfield Township is running for an open U.S. Senate seat against Republican Terri Lynn Land’.

‘The Detroit News and fact checkers last month cast doubt on the accuracy of the TV ad. On Monday, Boonstra acknowledged which health plan she chose, offering the first evidence of cost savings’.

  • ‘Boonstra said Monday her new plan she dislikes is the Blue Cross Premier…
