Avian Flu Diary: Voting On MERS Transmission: Do The Eyes Have It?.
Viruses of many kinds are transmitted by contact with sweat, saliva, body excretions, body fluids. So how many times a day or hour do people touch or scratch their nose, eye, or ear with their hand? MERS like Ebola and SAMS, and two types of Avian Influenza have high enough kill ratios to justify – using as many precautions as possible.

Al Feldstein, the leader and brains behind Mad magazine during its pop culture heyday, died on Tuesday at the age of 88. Though Mad peaked long ago, its impact on the comedians of the Boomer generation and beyond remains powerful.

Feldstein was editor from 1956-85, during which time he moved Mad from an obscure comic book into a sarcastic, irreverent satire machine. Under Feldstein, the “usual gang of idiots” brought into the fold Mad staples like Alfred E. Neuman’s gap-toothed grin, Spy v. Spy, Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions, and … actual folds.

(Impact of eating zinc oxide nanoparticles or silver nanoparticles – your guess is as good as theirs since they did not research that)
In the study, which was published online in the April issue of the Journal of Food Science, researchers determined survivability of bacterial pathogens after treatment with 2 percent oregano essential oil, 2 percent rosemary essential oil, zinc oxide nanoparticles or silver nanoparticles.
The compounds then were incorporated into edible films made from pullulan, and the researchers determined the antimicrobial activity of these films against bacterial pathogens inoculated onto petri dishes.
Finally, the researchers experimentally inoculated fresh and ready-to-eat meat and poultry products with bacterial pathogens, treated them with the pullulan films containing the essential oils and nanoparticles, vacuum packaged, and then evaluated for bacterial growth following refrigerated storage for up to three weeks.
“The results from this study demonstrated that edible films made from pullulan and incorporated with essential oils or nanoparticles have the potential to improve the safety of refrigerated, fresh or further-processed meat and poultry products,” said Cutter. “The research shows that we can apply these food-grade films and have them do double duty — releasing antimicrobials and imparting characteristics to protect and improve food we eat.”

Under the consent decree, Finger Lakes, the manufacturer and distributor of raw cow’s milk cheese, cannot receive, prepare, process, pack, hold or distribute food until it demonstrates that it has developed a control program to eliminate Listeria monocytogenes from its production facility and products. Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause serious illness and death.
The company must, among other actions, hire an independent laboratory to collect and analyze samples for the presence of Listeria; retain an independent sanitation expert; develop a program to control Listeria in the production facility and to train employees on sanitary food handling; and destroy all food items currently in the facility. Should the company be permitted to resume operations, the FDA may require the company to recall products or cease production if future violations occur.

“In Cincinnati – looking like you are doing something is as or more important than actually doing something – so look for a lot of people riding bikes that are doing the work and not their legs – grin.”
“We had a grand opening last Saturday, and everybody that has ridden a bike really super, super likes it,” he said.
Electric bicycles have a motor that can either assist as a rider pedals, or it can take over and power the bike without any need to pedal. Riders can also turn the motor off and pedal normally. Electric bicycles can go up to 20 miles per hour and have a range of 40 to 50 miles on a single charge. It costs only 5 cents to charge the bike fully. Unlike motor scooters, the motor on an electric bike is almost silent, Powell said.
Segway sells and rents electric bicycles in Cincinnati, but Pedego Cincinnati alone converts mechanical bikes into electric bicycles.
Powell said it costs between $350 and $1,500 to convert a mechanical bike to use an electric motor. The difference is in how powerful the battery is and the quality of the motor, he said.

The secret behind the moving of heavy and large stones to construct the Pyramids, the last remaining Ancient World Wonders, has been discovered and revealed by a team of scientists.
The scientists, consisting of physicists from the FOM Foundation and the University of Amsterdam , believe the ancient Egyptians used a ‘clever trick to make it easier to transport heavy pyramids stones by sledge’: wet sand.
“The Egyptians moistened the sand over which the sledge moved. By using the right quantity of water, they could halve the number of workers needed,” says a statement released by the physicists.
The dampness of the sand from pouring the right amount of water significantly reduced friction and how much force was required to move the huge stones, which, on average, are approximately 2.5 tons in weight.
The physicists explain that wet sand is twice as stiff and firm as dry sand. This, and the fact…

“There are several robots in the world, but that one which regulates traffic is made in Congo,” Thérèse Izayi, a female engineer and the Congolese inventor of two very unusual traffic signals, tells IPS.
Situated at an intersection on Triumphal Boulevard, near the Democratic Republic of Congo’s parliament in the capital, Kinshasa, the 2.5-metre traffic signal looks like an actual robot — with arms, legs, a chest and a head.
The breastplate pivots as the lights on it change from green to red. Then, it raises its arm to stop the traffic on one road, allowing vehicles from another to pass. The talking robot — it speaks both French and the local Lingala language — instructs: “Drivers, you can leave the road to pedestrians.”
It is made from aluminium to withstand high temperatures and humidity, and the heavy rains of this equatorial climate. There are cameras by its eyes and on its shoulders, which continuously film the traffic. It is also solar-powered to ensure its independence from electricity.

As I mentioned yesterday, Tennessee has officially become the first state in the country to criminalize drug use during pregnancy. The new law, which was signed by the Governor yesterday despite the best efforts of reproductive justice advocates, holds pregnant people criminally liable for harm caused to their fetuses or newborns.
Over at The Nation, Michelle Goldberg points out that, in addition to being just generally terrible for the health of both pregnant people and fetuses, the law could lead to more abortions — since folks who have used drugs during pregnancy may opt to terminate (which, lest we forget, is still totally legal) instead of risking up to 15 years in prison. In fact, that was a concern expressed by at least some anti-choicers when the legislature was considering the bill.
But, as Goldberg notes, apparently most ultimately chose to prioritize punishing pregnant people over protecting fetal life. Which, given that anti-choicers consistently oppose things, like birth control and comprehensive sex-ed, that would reduce abortion rates, is hardly surprising — but telling nonetheless.
via “For Tennessee lawmakers, punishing pregnant women is more important than protecting fetal life.”.
