Chile Cancels September Crustacean Trawl to Protect Common Hake | The Beacon: Oceana’s Blog

Chile has taken a major step to protect common hake, a species in decline from overfishing. Earlier this month, the Under-Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) decided to close the crustacean trawl fleet for the month of September around Valparaiso, Bernardo O’Higgins, and Maule, Chile. The move protects common hake, a fish commonly caught as bycatch in the crustacean fishery, which has declined by 70 percent from 2001 to 2013.

“This measure will benefit the recovery of common hake, which is a very important resource for artisanal fisheries. We hope it will soon be complemented with a comprehensive plan for the recovery of this species,” executive director of Oceana in Chile said in a press release.

SUBPESCA has synced the temporary ban with reproductive activity of common hake, which occurs during the month of September. About 90 percent of the fish caught in 2012 were juveniles, meaning they were not given a chance to reach reproductive maturity.

While Oceana welcomes the temporary ban, Oceana thinks a more comprehensive recovery plan should be put in place. Oceana would like the plan to include minimum catch sizes, total fishing quotas based on scientific research, and plans to combat illegal fishing.

Oceana in Chile works to create sustainable fisheries through a number of ways, like combating illegal, unreported, and irregular fishing, working to reduce bycatch, and establishing Marine Protected Areas.

Abbas announces Israel-Gaza ceasefire | Maan News Agency

President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday announced a long-term ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip.

In a short televised address, Abbas said the agreement would go into effect at 7 p.m.

“We confirm complete appreciation to the Egyptian efforts which started long ago seeking to satisfy all sides. Qatar also played a role in that. We also would like to mention that (US Secretary of State John) Kerry was also in touch with us for the same purpose and so we thank all those who played roles,” Abbas said.

“We discussed several necessary things with Hamas leaders in Qatar in order to enable the national consensus government to do its job,” he continued.”

Is 53 seconds long enough to gather my soul? — New Internationalist

To a close friend to whom I promised to stay alive:

I promised you I would stay alive in spite of them – and you know who ‘they’ are. You responded by saying that you wanted me to live for my own sake; not for someone else’s, or in spite of someone else. You said you would miss a part of your soul if I died. I’m sorry that I’m keeping my promise in the worst way possible, but I cannot handle a slow death any more.

My friend, I only want them to leave us alone, and let us continue the journey of our lives peacefully.

I’m still alive, my friend, and keeping my promise. Do you know why? I will only answer you because I know you can keep a secret: I’m still alive because death is the easiest way out of war, and life is the hardest way of all.

Life is precisely the hardest way of all.

You Can’t Fight Rape With Nail Polish | Dame Magazine

You Can’t Fight Rape With Nail Polish | Dame Magazine.

Criminals hear that all women have rape fantasies, and that most will make up stories about rape for the flimsiest of reasons—to avoid anyone finding out they had consensual sex, or to punish a man for not calling, say—even though the actual incidence of false reporting is between 2 and 8 percent, similar to other crimes. They hear that there’s no way to know who’s telling the truth in a “he said/she said” situation, and if you can’t prove a man guilty, then he’s innocent.

They hear about their peers being accused of rape and still allowed to graduate from college, while the alleged victims drop out of school. They hear that most rapes are never reported, and of those, very few are prosecuted. About those, they usually hear “not guilty.”

Criminals do listen to what we, as a society, tell them—and what we tell rapists, time and again, is that we don’t take their crime seriously, so they can probably get away with it. If other young men out there earnestly want to prevent rape, they’d be better off talking to their peers about consent, calling out other guys who dehumanize women, and intervening when they see something that makes them uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there’s no prize money for being an engaged and compassionate person. Maybe if there were, we’d have a society where a woman could order a beer in public without feeling the need to perform a chemistry experiment for her own safety.

I Quit Eating Only Salad or Eating Only Cake — Because I am Worthy, Loved & Beautiful. | Rebelle Society

{This applies to women and to men – good thoughts}

I’ve got news for you: You weren’t put into this universe to fail. You were born to make mistakes and learn and grow and rise up despite loss and heartache. Our bodies are our vehicles in which we are able to accomplish this.

Our bodies do not fail us.

Through every disease, every sickness and every injury, we are taught what it means to be better, to be more, to be stronger. When we love our bodies for what they are, when we treat them with respect, when we are thankful beyond measure for all that they allow us to experience, we rise.

We are born to rise, to become, to unbecome, to screw up and to learn. Find a way of living and loving that allows you to do this, and go do it.

You are irreplaceably beautiful. Yes, you are.

A Hot cinema night on Crete

matteringsofmind

There is always something magical about going to a cinema in a foreign land.

Never did I feel that more than on a hot and balmy August night in the mid 1970’s when I first saw the film “Zorba the Greek”        Now, I am not in the habit of seeing a movie when on holiday but I couldn’t resist the little open air cinema in the town of Heraklion on the Greek Island of Crete.

Little did I realise it, but  that night  I had stumbled onto a minute bit of cinema and political history in the making. “Zorba the Greek” – released in 1964, was adapted from the book of the same name written by the Greek national literary hero Nikos Kazantzakis. Born in this small seaside hamlet, he now lies beneath a modest monument on a hill high above the town.

“Zorba” is one of those late sixties…

TV Producer In Beverly Hills For Pre-Emmys Event Arrested For Being Tall, Bald And Black: LAist

Who is Charles Belk? He’s a college educated business man, who received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, then an MBA from Indiana University. He was a consultant for the NAACP, he worked on the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, has worked at IBM and has been on the board of numerous film festivals. Here’s his IMDB. Among the long list of credentials he rattled off in his Facebook post, not one of them was “bank robber.”

What Belk says confuses him the most is why the footage from the bank was not reviewed until after multiple requests by Belk, six hours after he was detained and forced to sit on the curb. The footage showed that it was a different tall, bald, black man, and Belk was free to go.

“If it can happen to me,” Belk wrote, “it can happen to anyone. Time has come for a change in the way our law enforcement officers ‘serve and protect’ us. We all do not fit the description.”

Study shows TB spread to pre-Columbian South America by seals, sea lions | Vaccine News Daily

“Our results show unequivocal evidence of human infection caused by pinnipeds (sea lions and seals) in pre-Columbian South America,” Anne Stone, a professor at the Arizona State University School of Human Evolution and Social Change and a researcher on the project, said. “Within the past 2,500 years, the marine animals likely contracted the disease from an African host species and carried it across the ocean to coastal people in South America.”

Right-wing Jews perform prayers in central West Bank village | Maan News Agency

Dozens of right-wing Israeli settlers raided the northern West Bank village of Kifl Haris in Salfit district in the central West Bank overnight escorted by Israeli troops and performed Jewish prayers.

Locals told Ma’an that the settlers arrived at the shrine of Muslim prophet Thul-Kifl which the Jews identify as the Biblical prophet Ezekiel.

They spent the night at the place, located in the center of Kifl Haris, performing Jewish prayers before leaving in the early morning hours.
