Mexico first with dengue vaccination?

The second and final clinical trial of the drug was conducted on 20,875 children aged 9-16 in five Latin American countries, including Mexico. It provided high protection against dengue hemorrhagic fever and cut by 80% the risk of hospitalization, said the drug firm on Wednesday.

These tests and earlier ones in Asia showed the vaccine acts best as an immune booster for people with previous exposure, so it is seen as being the most useful in tropical regions where the disease is common, rather than a vaccination for tourists.

Grizzly Bear Conflicts in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: It’s Time for More Solutions and Less Killing | Christine Wilcox’s Blog | Switchboard, from NRDC

{Just stop welfare cattle grazing on public land and reduce the number of cattle – then the number of Grizzlies will go down – pretty simple except that cattle ranchers and meat industry and politicians they subsidize are too used to being on the welfare roles.}

What we are left with is more grizzly bear deaths and virtually no changes to address the ongoing conflicts with livestock. But there are effective ways to reduce conflicts that are good for livestock and good for bears. Range riders, electric fencing, and guard dogs could be used to protect livestock. Alternative grazing practices like keeping cattle bunched together, and ensuring that mothers and calves stay together, could reduce the chance of bears attacking cattle. Since calves are often targeted when bears attack cattle, eliminating calves on the Upper Green grazing allotments could also prove to be effective in reducing conflicts.

How the Ebola Outbreak in Africa Could Become a Threat to Europe – SPIEGEL ONLINE

Joanne Lui is convinced that the best way to protect Germany and Europe from Ebola is to halt the disease in its current location. She’s also trying to convince other countries around the world of the same. “To put out this fire, we must run into the burning building.”

China poultry back on sale as HK grapples with latest food scare – Channel NewsAsia

{Hard to fight centuries of custom and way of doing things. Hong Kong jumped to head of the line in preventing new bird, porcine, and human influenzas by closing live (wet) markets last January. Now with much pressure, the live markets are back and bird flu and new influenzas will not be far behind. Let’s hope that by time Lunar New Year celebrations come, they recover sense and shut the breeding grounds for a new worldwide pandemic.

Like climate change deniers who just don’t want to believe the world has changed – those who have always bought/sold live pigs and poultry at market don’t want to believe that worldwide surge in these markets over last 20 years makes development of a world killer flu even more likely than is the past}

Live poultry from China is back in the wet markets of Hong Kong just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations after having been banned over a bird flu scare in January.

JBTC – Just because they can – Palestinian teenager shot in head by Israeli forces dies – Autopsy announced for Monday

16 year old Muhammed Sunuqrut died in hospital on Sunday after being critically wounded by Israeli forces in an East Jerusalem protest last week. Relatives state that the teenager was shot in the head at close range with a rubber-coated bullet.

Muhammed Sunuqrut was declared clinically dead at Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem, on Thursday before dying on Sunday.

He was wounded in the Wadi Joz neighborhood close to his home on the 31st of August. The teenager’s uncle, Motabi Sunuqrut, said the boy had not even taken part in the demonstrations and that the area was quiet at the time of the incident.

“Ten minutes earlier I returned home and nothing was happening. He left home and was talking to his aunt on the phone, when suddenly he was shot at close range. After he fell the soldiers went on beating him and wouldn’t let anyone come near him to treat him,” he said.

13 Reminders to Help You Deal with Haters. | Rebelle Society

{Took me ages to finally learn this – when I did, I could finally put away all the hurt one of my parents gave me – when I was not the real target of the hurtful comments}

5. Don’t take it personally. Don Miguel Ruiz’s second agreement states: Don’t take anything personally.

“Whatever happens around you, don’t take it personally… Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind; they are in a completely different world from the one we live in.

When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world.“

McDonald’s, FedEx, and Shifting Legal Views of Employment

Holy moly, Guess there will be a bill introduced by GOP to limit NLRB’s ability to make rulings that impact franchise operations and independent contractor arrangements

Working-Class Perspectives

Sometimes seemingly obscure legal rulings indicate major changes in the struggle for social and economic justice. Two recent rulings involving independent contractors and franchise employers could help enable workers and unions to make breakthroughs in improving wages and working conditions.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that McDonald’s is a “joint employer” of franchisees’ workers and is accountable for their franchisees’ questionable and sometimes illegal actions. Corporations often use franchise agreements to avoid fulfilling legal personnel requirements by shifting responsibilities to franchisees. As the Wall Street Journal suggests, the NLRB decision exposes large corporations who use franchise agreements to potential liability claims.

In a second decision, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (Western California, Washington and Oregon) overruled a District Court and said that FedEx has misclassified employees as independent contractors. Legally, independent contractors can’t be directly supervised, supplied with workspace or tools, or otherwise treated like employees, and…

Ebola Is Surging in Places It Had Been Beaten Back – ABC News

“The epidemic is now so vast and so extensive that one should consider that in the three (hardest-hit) countries, everybody is now at risk and it won’t be over until the last case has survived and six weeks have passed,” said Piot, who runs London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

U.S. Open 2014: Serena Williams Beats Caroline Wozniacki for 18th Grand Slam Title – NYTimes.com

{Power, grace, Serena!}

Serena Williams was asked last week what the number 18 meant to her.

“It means legal to do some things,” she said with a laugh.

But she knew what the reporter was getting at.

“It also means legendary,” she added more seriously.

She would not go so far as to call herself legendary — “I’m just Serena,” she said — but she joined some elite company Sunday, when she tied Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova with her 18th Grand Slam singles title.

The top-ranked Williams defeated Caroline Wozniacki, 6-3, 6-3, to capture her third United States Open final in a row and sixth over all.

JBTC – Israel seizes 500 acres south of Hebron for military use

JBTC – Just because they can –

Israeli authorities notified residents of Wad Eben Zaid, north of Yatta and to the south of Hebron this morning that a military order will seize 2000 dunums of their land for army use.

The coordinator of the Popular Resistance Committee against the Wall and Settlements in Yatta, Rateb Al-Jbour, declared  that  the Israeli authorities gave residents from the Wad Eben Zaid region a military order  dated from 1997 to colonize around 500 acres of their land.

Al-Jbour added that the residents did not know about this declaration and that part of these colonized lands had been used to build homes. The land belongs to the Al-Nameen, Al-Jbareen, Abu- Aram, Al-Doudra and Al- Hmamdeh families.
