Make a Wish #birthdays #poetry

penned in moon dust

happy birthdaySo many bright memories

when we were young

if I could  pull one string

memories would unravel and sing

Your favorite cake cut, 16 pieces

somehow shattered the moment

no one could understand

inside you cried

kaleidoscopic do they turn

island letters on soup can labels

and crushes on boys

such are a young girl’s toys

the merry-go-round up and downs

so many presents still to be wrapped

burning late Christmas Eve light

sharing dreams long into the night

 the stability you gave

 my life in chaos

much more than absurd

no one could love just hurt

I offer you a wish over many miles

you deserve candles

and  so much more

I’m bringing chocolate cake to your door

This poem is written for a good friend who put up with so many of my highs and lows (in life.)

Blessings to you Lorodd, you deserve the best.

The Partnership for Jamaica: Letter from the Environmental Sector to the Prime Minister

Petchary's Blog

Please find below a press release posted by the environmental sector, together with the text of the letter sent to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, to be read out at today’s meeting of the Partnership for Jamaica (PFJ).

Environmental sector suspends attendance at Partnership for Jamaica meetings

Following sector-wide consultation and participation in two meetings with the Governance Committee of the Partnership for Jamaica (PFJ), the environmental sector has written to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller suspending their participation in Partnership for Jamaica meetings.

The letter to the PM outlines the sector’s discomfort with the National Housing Trust/Outameni transactions and regards the handling of this matter as a breach of the Partnership Agreement, which emphasizes accountability and transparency.

“We have asked that our letter to the Prime Minister re read at tomorrow’s Council meeting of the PFJ, so it can be part of the record,” said Diana McCaulay, the environmental…

Terminal cancer patients now expected to attend work interviews or lose welfare support

Pride's Purge

(not satire)

From Charlotte Ryan:

“I have terminal cancer, my prognosis is 0-3 years and I was diagnosed in March 2014 with my brain stem glioma. In April 2014 I was placed in the support group* for 3 years and I have gone from being able-bodied to hopelessly disabled. I have many neurological deficits including diploplia, dyspraxia, dysarthria and dysphagia. To save you googling, this means that I have double vision and am going blind, I’m very clumsy and most days I drop everything I pick up, my speech is failing and one day I won’t be able to communicate verbally at all and I have such difficulty swallowing that I now have a feeding tube. I cannot leave the house alone and I’m at risk of choking and need 24 hour care. They speak of me going into residential care, but they hope to keep me in my…

Vatican backs down and gives mild rebuke to American nuns | World news | The Guardian

But in its most critical passage, Tuesday’s report merely called for the American nuns to “carefully review their spiritual practices and ministry to assure that these are in harmony with Catholic teaching about God, creation, the incarnation and the redemption,” and called for greater dialogue.

This did not entirely lift the cloud cast by the 2012 reprimand from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican’s watchdog for theological orthodoxy, which put the organisation under a mandate involving close supervision, which continues to this day. But the change in tone in Tuesday’s report may reflect a new and more conciliatory policy under Pope Francis.

It was made clear during a press conference at the Vatican that individual reports had been drawn up. Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, the head of the Vatican department responsible for religious orders, said his officials would be sending them to “those institutes whose individual reports indicated areas of concern”.

Sister Simone Campbell, the executive director of the Catholic social justice pressure group Network and leader of the Nuns on the Bus project, which tours the US to draw attention to social issues, said the report “reflects the difference that a different pope can make”.

She said: “It was really wonderful to have the document say that religious women, more than most, may understand Pope Francis’s call to care for the poor and marginalised. The invitation to dialogue – I really hope they mean it.”

Oprah Winfrey on Eric Garner and Ferguson: ‘Everything is always happening exactly as it should and on time’ – People – News – The Independent

“Life is always there to teach, enlighten, and open you up to the greater possibilities of what can be done,” she continued. “If you’re willing to be awake and see it. What’s exciting to me is that people are awake. If it took Eric Garner and it took Michael Brown and other instances to do than, then… That’s where we are in our evolvement as human beings.”

Three Arrested in Egypt For Speaking English | Egyptian Streets

The latest detentions come as there is a climate of paranoia and suspicion among Egyptians. Earlier this year Le Monde Diplomatique’s Editor-in-Chief Alain Gresh was arrested at a trendy cafe in downtown Cairo after a woman reported him to police for discussing politics.

Gresh and two Egyptians were arrested after the woman screamed at them for speaking about Egypt in English and Arabic.

The French journalist, who was born in Cairo, said he received a formal apology from authorities, including both police and military figures.

The incidents have raised fear among Egypt’s expatriate community and foreign journalists.

The clashes occurred between 4:00 and 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The first two were between Federal Police and students and parents [of the disappeared students].
