#JeSuisCharlie: Muslims have nothing to apologize for
I participated in the online support campaigns with the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie and I still support all attempts, by anyone, to highlight the importance of freedom of speech. I was never a big fan of Charlie Hebdo, but that they have the right to publish whatever they want is, for me, non-debatable. I don’t even debate this topic with people anymore. If you’re bothered by something, write about it, ‘complain’, do something – that’s your right as well! But that people are allowed to express whichever view they hold is non-negotiable. I couldn’t care less if you think that drawing a Messiah or a Prophet (capital M and P are intentional) is offensive. Being Offended is not a Right, it’s your choice.
This is what a no-offense cartoon would look like. (Not my work)
But this is what, besides the actual attack, bothered me the most: people asking, in their…

Islamophobia in France more prevalent, political scientist argues | News | DW.DE | 07.01.2015
Easier for a smart woman to understand what is going on than for dullard guys, For one thing, Islam critics in France have increasingly free reign. The Front National is able to express its sentiments in public these days, in comparison to the past when it was sharply criticized by journalists. Now, many French citizens are keen to pledge support for the Front National, and the populist ideas of the party are disseminated in simple and banal ways in French society. Other parties, as well, have picked up the ideas of the Front National.
In addition, France is currently dealing with high unemployment, and, as a result, French society has sought a scapegoat on which it can blame its miseries. That scapegoat is the religion of Islam and the Muslim community.

Something Disturbing Happens When People Say “Black” Instead of “African-American” – Mic
How is it that researchers/journaists totally miss how the world has changed – There are still many negative effects of old racism but the world has really changed and these are the people who led the change.
African-American says little since Africa is not single culture, nation, or ethic grouping. A Black-American represents a diverse group of people who created a new culture in America and ultimately the world. With Jass/Jazz in music, language, style, all sort of arts, new art forms were invented and a new culture. That culture, which is uniquely American has become the unifying global youth culture. Hip Hop and Rap – the modern forms of jazz and blues can be heard and see in youth culture from Japan, China, India, Iraq, Egypt, Serbia, Bulgaria, Italy, England, Ireland, Spain, Argentina, Chile and beyond. One need only view and listen to Chile’s Ana Tijoux’s – Vengo explosion on the world this hear to understand my point.
What follows is a view based on the 19th century, not the 20th or 21st.
What accounts for the difference? Today, in popular culture and journalistic discourse, the terms black and African-American are often used interchangeably, and neither has established a leg up over the other as the more progressive linguistic choice. But perhaps civil rights and religious leader Jesse Jackson, who championed “African-American” in the 1980s, was right to assume that the term served as an opportunity to recast black America in a more positive light. As Joe Pinsker notes at the Atlantic, the logic was that it “echoed the labels of groups, such as ‘Italian-Americans’ and ‘Irish-Americans,’ that had already been freed of widespread discrimination

Film is a Living, Breathing Thing: The Jamaica International Reggae Film Festival, June 2 – 6, 2015
I recently took tea with Barbara Blake Hannah, cultural activist and consultant, filmmaker, writer, former Senator, blogger, mother, devout Rastafarian. Yes, all of the above!
Barbara speaks in a low voice. She sips her tea. We commiserate with each over our lingering “chik v” pains. She has an air of quiet dignity, but just under the surface is a dry sense of humor, a sharp intellect. Once she starts talking about her life and career in film (all kinds of famous names falling from her lips) she becomes animated. The words flow swiftly. I scribble in my notebook, barely able to keep up.

But we were sitting in Kingston’s Tea Tree Creperie to talk about the Jamaica International Reggae Film Festival, to take place from June 2 – 6 in Ocho Rios. The…
