Modi bets on GM crops for India’s second green revolution | Reuters.

His bet will mean many deaths for India when monocrops succumb to massive crop failures due to unforeseen new fungi, bacteria, or rust. Will also open doors for new Bhopal type disasters but its all about money and not people or the planet.

How Republicans Will Govern – HATE, FEAR and LOATHING – ‘Kansas Republicans Strip LGBT Workers Of Anti-Discrimination Protection’

The Last Of The Millenniums

gay rights

‘Never underestimate the power of right wing bigotry. It’s the core of their ideology’.

‘Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) on Tuesday unilaterally rescinded rules that had protected state workers from discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation’.

‘Brownback said an anti-discrimination order issued in 2007 by then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D), should have been done through legislation’.

“This Executive Order ensures that state employees enjoy the same civil rights as all Kansans without creating additional ‘protected classes’ as the previous order did,” Brownback said in a statement’.

“Protected classes”. So everyone does’t qualify for ‘equal protection under the law”?

“Any such expansion of ‘protected classes’ should be done by the legislature and not through unilateral action. The order also reaffirms our commitment to hiring, mentoring and recognizing veterans and individuals with disabilities.”

‘Translation’:

“I destroyed Kansas’ economy and everyone is SUPER pissed off at me so I’ll do some loud…

Several years ago, when Brian and I were about to graduate from college, we were at an awards banquet where he was being honored for having a GPA of, like, eight million or something, and they asked all of the honorees to say a few words about their goals when they were recognized. Brian got up and accepted his certificate, and then said, “I have two goals in life: to qualify for Boston, and to be useful.”

I liked that. I still like it. In fact, I like it so much I ended up stealing those goals for myself.  And even though we’re only about…

My Review of the Village Square Event Featuring Kris Kobach

I finally made it to the event located at a large church. There was camera crew, a moderator and there were fact checkers. The fact checkers were there to challenge any stats that were provided during the event and make sure they were valid. They were armed with laptops and a strong internet connection. I started to sweat. I know I said I was 35. Honestly, I’m 35. They looked at me and I looked at them. Suddenly they started typing. Ok, I’m not 35, maybe I’m 39. Did I say 39? Ok, maybe I’m 40. Certainly they have more important things to fact check than my age. Jesus Christ it was hot in there. Did I say Jesus Christ out loud? Damn it, it’s a church. I’m definitely going to hell.

Moving on…..Kris Kobach was the first to speak. He gave a speech about illegal immigration and how it’s a drain on our economy. He went on and on about how illegal immigrants come to this country and milk our social services. He spoke out about illegal immigrants sending their children to our free public schools. He spoke about the meat-packing industry wages falling due to illegal immigrants.

It was amazing that I kept my composure during Kobach’s speech. I do have a confession to make. I was guilty of having multiple sargasms during this time. My eyes were in full roll mode and I caught myself sighing a number of times. I mean I’m only human. If I didn’t have those outlets I probably would have exploded right there in the church.

Marina Cantacuzino: Let’s leave ‘evil’ out of the Anders Breivik case – Commentators – Voices – The Independent

Any of us who attempt to understand evil may be accused, as indeed Gitta Sereny was, of forgiving evil. However, the struggle is not with forgiving but with empathising while maintaining moral integrity. Stephen Cherry, in his fascinating book Healing Agony (Re-Imagining Forgiveness), gets to the heart of the matter when he concludes: “In order to empathise with the cruel and heartless you have to imagine being cruel and heartless yourself.” To realise that evil isn’t so different from us can be a terrifying place to visit. However, since identification and empathy are also given to the victims, therein lies the restorative process.

News from The Associated Press -Syriza

The Greek government is facing a Monday deadline to come up with credible reform proposals to extend the existing bailout deal and the drafting of a new one.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be meeting his inner cabinet of 10 ministers later Saturday to discuss the reform proposals.

The agreement to extend the country’s rescue loans, although conditional, was greeted with relief by many people as a first step forward and away from the crushing austerity of recent years.

Others were more skeptical, wondering whether the left-wing Syriza government will be able to keep even a fraction of its promises and how it will find the money to finance them.

USAID funds Ebola ‘smart pod’ project

Sharmila Anandasabapathy, director of Baylor Global Initiatives and the Baylor Global Innovation Center emphasized both the time and cost efficiency of the ESP.

“Compared to a stand-alone hospital, you’re talking two weeks [for it to be deployed] as opposed to potentially nine to 12 months,” Anandasabapathy said. “For cost, I think it would be between 1/10th and 1/20th the cost, depending on the facility.”

Each ESP medical unit will be equipped with eight beds, an air filtration system, air conditioning and a contained waste management system. It will also come with a set of clinical training apps that would show how to properly use the ESP. Once a request to deploy an ESP comes in, a team could have it in the field and operating in two weeks.

“Like Legos, you can put multiple containers together so you can go from an eight-bed unit to a 16-bed unit very quickly,” Anandasabapthy said. ‘You can develop individual units for waste management that can be attached to larger units, but we hope that at full scale, we could build a 100-bed hospital in a month.”
