Turkish Tuesday, Sihirli Annem (My Magical Mom) s1e46: Is It Magic, Or Is It Us?
We start off in the cafe with Sadık arriving early to collect Betüş and shop for dinner that evening, as Yavuz and Eda are coming over, unbeknownst to Dudu, of course, which Betüş reminds Suzan not to mention if Dudu comes to the cafe. The three adults comment that hopefully little Çilek has finally gotten over her crush on Yavuz. No such luck, of course, as we cut to our little rebel fairy at home putting on makeup! Avni is of course watching all of this from across the way, while Firuze id downstairs cooking and reminding Cem and Ceren to be more careful with their shoes and not to touch the food until their guests arrive. As the two older siblings stomp off arguing about something that Ceren knows about Cem’s girlfriend, our little red-headed rebel shocks poor Firuze with the makeup and grown-up dress. Absolutely inappropriate, and reminds me of an earlier tragedy with a similar aged young model. As Ceren arrives and sees her, little Çilek gets disapproving speeches from both her older sister and again from Firuze, but remains unmoved. Cem, meanwhile, insists on calling his classmate to find out what is going on with his girlfriend, over Ceren’s strong objections. He finally asks why, and she explains that his girlfriend will find out, third-hand, eventually, that he does not trust her. Then they go downstairs to find Firuze fed up with their little sister, who remains defiant about her un-childlike dress, though reassuring him that it is only juice in her wine glass. Cem orders her to change clothes, yelling just as their parents arrive, looking at the little rebel in shock as she threatens to tell Dudu about the dinner, if her parents dare to criticize her dress and makeup as Cem has just done. No one knows what to do as the little rebel marches off, refusing to change clothes or remove the adult makeup she is wearing. Betüş adopts the tactic of ignoring her as the little rebel tries to help her prepare to set the table until forced to stop and explain that it is not the clothing, but rather the threat to expose Eda and Yavuz’s meeting at the family home, that really has Betüş upset. Nevertheless, she also tries to get little Çilek to refer correctly to Yavuz as Yavuz Abi, which the little rebel fairy still refuses, insisting on calling him Yavuz, as an adult would do, and then marching off again, with a horrible parody of a sexy swagger. The level of patience exhibited by these parents amazes me, as any American kid pulling this kind of stunt would have had her hide tanned long ago. Suzan and Avni meanwhile are having the usual argument about his ‘maniac-like’ behavior while he tries to explain to her about little Çilek next door, and she gives him 24 hours to toss out the binoculars…
