(News, Status, or Profit Seeking?) Was Ebola the culprit in the ancient Plague of Athens? – The Washington Post

Powel Kazanjian, a professor of history and infectious diseases at the University of Michigan.

In a new paper, Kazanjian suggests that an Ebola virus may have been the culprit in the Plague of Athens, a five-year epidemic that began in 430 B.C., whose cause has long been a matter of conjecture. Not only was the famed historian Thucydides, who chronicled the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, a witness to the Athenian disease, he also contracted it himself and survived.

Afghan Women’s Writing Project | Do You See What I See

Do you see what I see?  Can you see what I see?  Are you blind, or are you only pretending to be blind?  Do you feel what I feel, or are you just pretending to be heartless?  Aren’t you embarrassed to kill people?  Maybe you don’t have a conscience.

Dear brothers, aren’t you tired of destroying our country?  The same bombings, the same streets, the same war, the same fears repeating daily?  Don’t you see that the same students go to school every day, the same people go to work?  Can’t you see?  You will not stop us.

Oh, I forgot, you are pretending to be blind.

Taliban?  That’s your name, right?  Come face me.  Face my writings, my words, my pen, my paper.  I am Aysha.  I am certain that I am more powerful than you are.

Oh, I forgot, you are heartless, gutless.  You don’t have the strength to face me.  You are nothing more than fear in people’s minds.  Don’t you know fear is powerful only in the dark?  Don’t you know that the sun shines after every dark night?  We are not scared of you.  I am not scared of you.  You will not stop me from living my life.

Oh, I forgot, you don’t have a mind.  If you did you would not be called Taliban, and you would not kill others.  I understand now, yes, I understand: Taliban has no heart, no mind, no eyes!  You are not humans.  Humans have hearts and minds and eyes.  That’s why we feel, why we think, why our eyes express the life inside.

Taliban must be some other creatures, junk creatures.

I understand now, yes, I understand.

A Love Story From The War-Torn Rooftops of Tripoli To Lebanon

A Separate State of Mind | A Blog by Elie Fares

Love and War on the Rooftop - a Tripolitan tale

Welcome to Lebanon’s Tripoli, the city most of the country loves to hate.

A few months ago, whenever Tripoli was mentioned in casual conversation, it would be surrounded by a spew of sectarian hate speech. That conversation you heard or maybe even pa
rticipated in probably lacked depth, was never in context, always judgmental and served to further deepen the chasm between this Northern city and the rest of the country.

There’s nothing in this country that’s a more heart-breaking story or tragedy than the current state of Tripoli. Boasting the country’s biggest old souks, richest people, most important architectural feats and second largest population, it is also the country’s poorest, least developed, least cared for and least acknowledged place.

A lot can be said about that city, and I have over, and over, and over again. One thing for sure, however, is that the potential that Tripoli…
