Donald Trump is so outrageous and noisy that it’s easy to forget about Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. So we Googled him this morning and we were rewarded. Here is what he said on Thursday about Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who went to jail for contempt of court after she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples:“Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America.”He’s right. That’s not America – in the real country, as opposed to his fictional version, Ms. Davis was not arrested for living according to her faith. She was arrested for using her government power to impose her religious beliefs on others. A conservative should be furious at her for violating the First Amendment. But no — Mr. Cruz said: “I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to choose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court opinion.”Leaving aside the interesting phrase “lawless court opinion,” when did the Obama administration try to compel anyone to make that choice? Certainly not in the case of Ms. Davis, who was directly flouting a ruling by the Supreme Court. Mr. Obama had nothing to do with it.

Meathead Movers was founded in 1997 by two brothers, Aaron and Evan Steed, when they were in high school. They called themselves ‘Meathead Movers’ because they enjoyed playing sports and lifting weights. They’ve partnered with seven area shelters where they help victims of domestic abuse get out of those relationships for good.Good Shepherd, a transitional domestic violence shelter for women and children, is one such partner. Kathleen Buczko, Good Shepherd’s Director of Institutional Advancement, told LAist that Meathead Movers will move their client’s belongings from the transitional housing to their new, permanent housing “after their healing is complete.” With other shelters, Meathead Movers will go to homes where men or women are living with abusive partners and move them from that home to a shelter.”We know how hard it is to pack up someone’s life and move it to a new location, but it’s unimaginable to think about a woman and her children trying to pack up all their belongings and flee before the abuser returns home,” CEO Aaron Steed said in a statement.
NEW YORK (AP) — Can’t count out Serena Williams, no matter how big the deficit, no matter how off-target her strokes, no matter how much the pressure might be mounting as she bids for a calendar-year Grand Slam….
Anti-refugee rhetoric has been vociferous in the relatively homogenous Czech Republic, but the tide of public opinion may now be turning. Ian Willoughby reports from Prague.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building in Tokyo on Sunday, while as many as 300 other protests took place across the country on the same day, manifestations of the public’s displeasure with the legislation presently being debated in the Diet. A vote on the new laws could take place in the Diet as soon as September 14.And while privately they admit that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s overwhelming majority in the Diet means that it is inevitable that it will ram through security bills that they believe trample across the nation’s pacifist constitution, the demonstrators insist this is just the start of their campaign.

The most heartwarming story of recent days was when Abdul-Halim Attar had his entire future changed because of one picture. He was carrying his sleeping daughter on his back across the streets of Beirut as he tried to provide to her by selling BIC pens. His picture caught the world’s attention, but it was fleetingand momentary, like everything that catches the world’s attention these days.
Why Abdul-Halim Attar needed to go viral to make ends meet was never the issue. Viral pictures should not be how the Syrian refugee crisis gets handled, but this is how it’s becoming.
To Syria’s children, I’m terribly sorry it has come to this. I’m terribly sorry you need to be photographed in pictures sleeping on your fathers’ shoulders for someone to care. I’m terribly sorry you need to be photographed dead at a beach for people to feel sorry.
