Louisiana reports 55th West Nile virus case of 2015

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) confirmed another West Nile virus case this week, the 55th for 2015.

There have been 34 neuroinvasive disease (WN–NID) cases out of the 55 cases. Fourteen of the 55 have been asymptomatic, and seven were West Nile fever. As of today, there have been four deaths related to West Nile Virus for this year, which happened in DHH Regions 2, 4, 7 and 9.

Approximately 90 percent of West Nile virus cases are considered asymptomatic, and only 10 percent of those infected develop the full disease. A small percentage of these develop WN-NID, which swells the spinal cord or brain and can potentially cause brain damage or  death. Regular West Nile virus fever is not as severe and shows flu-like symptoms.

“There should be a continued level of concern if you are outdoors or if your house is not adequately protected from mosquitoes,”

DHH State Health Officer Jimmy Guidry said. “Even though the weather is getting cooler, we should continue to protect ourselves against infections. West Nile virus cases have been reported as late in the year as December.”

′New facet of violence′ in Germany | Germany | DW.COM | 19.10.2015

{If you don’t stand with the refugees, who will stand with you when the mob comes to your door?}

Anti-immigrant sentiments in Germany are on the rise, and taking on harsher forms. DW spoke to Professor Andreas Zick, an expert on violence and conflict, as the anti-migrant Pegida movement was getting ready to celebrate its first anniversary in the group’s eastern stronghold of Dresden.DW: A man who was active in the far-right scene in the past on Saturday stabbed the Cologne mayoral candidate responsible for refugees in the city. Germany’s interior minister said the attack underlines growing concerns over hatred and violence amid the refugee crisis. Is this in fact a new “quality” of violence? Are people losing their inhibitions?Professor Andreas Zick: Yes, we’re seeing a new facet of violence. In Germany, we’ve had 179 right-wing extremist killings since 1990, there have been more than 500 hate crimes against asylum housing, and now there’s the same phenomenon of “lone-wolf” terrorism that we observe on the Islamist terrorist scene.Is the mood in Germany changing?Dramatically. A year ago, when Pegida started these marches in Dresden, we already argued that from the perspective of extremism research, the symbols and the communications via the Internet were very aggressive. It was violence-oriented from the beginning. We know the right-wing extremist milieus tried to be in the streets and also on the Internet, where they discussed what to do. Over the last few months, the idea in the radicalized milieu of not only communicating and shouting out the hate, but of acting and controlling the streets has gained momentum.

Eritrean man, beaten and shot in Israel after being mistaken for attacker, dies from wounds | News | DW.COM | 19.10.2015

{So one has to ask – how many other killings have the authorities encouraged and excused?} An Eritrean man died after being mistakenly shot and beaten following a shooting in southern Israel, officials said Monday.On Sunday, an Arab gunman opened fire on a crowd in a bus station, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding nine other people. The assailant then engaged in a gun battle with authorities before fleeing outside, where he was shot dead.Amid the confusion, an Eritrean migrant was shot by an Israeli security guard while crawling on the floor. A crowd of people, thinking the Eritrean man was the culprit, then surrounded him and began beating him, while several others rushed to his side in an attempt to protect him.The man died later that night in hospital.Reasons for the man’s shooting are still unclear. Government officials and members of the media have reacted with disgust at the man’s death.”It’s terrible,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon, according to the Associated Press news agency. “It shows you what a terrible situation we are in.”Speaking to members of his Likud Party on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was a “law abiding” country where “no one should take the law into their own hands.”

4 of 10 Danish Muslims want Quran-based laws – The Local

{They need to think again and understand they are in a new land and cannot change it into one that has never existed. It is not religion they preach but pure politics!}

Jens Peter Frølund Thomsen, a social studies professor at the University of Aarhus who specializes in the relationship between Danes and immigrants, said it is surprising that so many Danish Muslims think that their holy book should be part of the national legal system.  “Here is an indicator that religious beliefs interfere in some political opinions and attitudes. Our secular society, in which political power and the rule of law are hailed above all else, is something that many have reservations about. It shows that democratic norms haven’t taken root amongst all immigrant groups,” Thomsen told Jyllands-Posten.

VDU’s blog: Can MERS-CoV be found in the upper and lower respiratory tract of infected camels? You bet your single hump it can!

Seems pretty dumb to wait on more convenient data while people still get infected, become sick and often die.On balance, separating camels from humans, being better protected when in contact with camels, and improving infection prevention and control in hospitals may even obviate the need for vaccination. Gasp.

{Not having an easy answer is bothering those who want to excuse humans from having a role in facilitating the MERS outbreak. Seems obvious to me that there is another vector that can pass the disease on to humans and then humans pass on themselves. Back to the bats and massive date farms.}
