At night, I crossed the frontier in the middle of Nicosia. The northern side is much darker and there are fewer people on the road. Wandering on the deserted street, I can’t help fearing a little.

We are told we will become invisible. That we will be ugly hags that no one will ever desire sexually again. That we will be biologically worthless once we can no longer bear children.Lies. It’s all lies. It’s not our aging they fear. It’s our power. Confident women still scare the shit out of many people in our society. What better way to undermine that confidence than by making us terrified of the single biological reality we cannot escape no matter what we do?We’re scary because we see through your bullshit. We’re scary because we don’t need your approval. We’re scary because we don’t need you.

A string of anti-Semitic attacks in Marseille has raised questions over whether Jewish men and boys should wear their skullcaps. The city’s Jewish leader Zvi Ammar has urged Jews not to wear a kippa “until better days.”

Central America is at the gates of a wave of deportations of its undocumented citizens in the US which will aggravate the precarious situation of the region and could lead to a “certain death” for thousands who left fleeing the gangs.
This is the opening paragraph from an article in El Salvador’s leading newspaper La Prensa Grafica on Sunday. This paragraph highlights how Salvadorans are viewing the raids by US immigration authorities starting New Years weekend which rounded up Central Americans who were under orders of deportation. The news coverage of these immigration raids at migrant’s homes and the subsequent deportations has been constant.
Church leaders in El Salvador denounced the deportations. The Roman Catholic archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar, used the occasion of his Sunday press conference to call on president Obama to stop the deportations. Escobar labelled the deportations unjust and urged the US to adopt comprehensive immigration reform. Salvadoran Lutheran bishop Medardo Gomez called for migrants who had fled for their lives to be granted asylum in the US, and warned of what could befall them if they were sent back to El Salvador.
US Ambassador to El Salvador Mari Carmen Aponte was forced to give a press conference to defend her country’s actions. She stated that families need to understand that there are consequences for failing to comply with US immigration law which had not changed. Those who failed to comply with the law would be deported, she said, emphasizing that the current round-ups were for those persons who already had an order of deportation after immigration courts had determined they did not qualify for any available status to remain.
The Salvadoran government announced a program for re-integration of Salavadorans deported back to the country.
What the New York Times calls a shameful roundup of refugees has been a major foreign policy mistake for the US. The number of Central Americans being deported in these raids is tiny compared to the more than 21,000 Salvadorans deported from the US and Mexico in 2015. But the result has been news coverage in El Salvador and throughout Central America where the US is easily portrayed as a heartless country rounding up mothers and children at the beginning of a new year and sending them back to mortal danger. It might be a policy intended for political benefits in the US, but if the idea was to deter more migrants from coming it won’t work. The only thing getting more news coverage than the immigration raids is the record wave of violence which forces people to flee..

A commenter asked me last week to write up a straight-forward post looking at the path I took to qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I realized that I’ve dribbled the information all over my blog but I’ve never bothered to do a comprehensive post. I read a similar post by Teal at Miles to the Trials, where she details her path from a 4:09 marathon to qualifying for the Olympic Trials, and so I’m going to model my post after hers (and by the way, if you haven’t read hers, you should – talk about freaking motivational!)
I ran my first marathon a little over six years ago, at Walt Disney World in Orlando. My most recent marathon was last March in Albany, Georgia. I’ve run about one marathon a year since 2010, which is when I decided that it made sense to pay someone a bunch of money to…

Leonard Peltier has been in prison for 40 years
COLEMAN, FLORIDA — The International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee (ILPDC) in an email to Native News Online on Sunday evening said that the preliminary diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurism has been confirmed. MRI results indicating the size and location must be reviewed by physicians who will consult with Peltier.
“We would expect the Bureau of Prison to act with utmost urgency, but have long ago learned not to get our hopes up for speedy action,” says Peter Clark, co-chairman of the International Leonard Peltier Defense Committee. “The last time I visited Leonard was June 2015. During our visit Leonard put his hand on his abdomen and said ‘I know something is wrong in here.’ He then went on to describe symptoms of this condition. Leonard had described his illness to the medical staff at Coleman USP I prior to June 2015.”
“ILPDC has put out numerous calls to action since that time, and Leonard’s legal team and supporters have fought for years for adequate healthcare for Leonard. ILPDC will provide further details as they become available. Supporters should keep pressure on the Bureau of Prison for timely treatment and transfer to a suitable medical facility,” Clark continued.
Please visit http://1.usa.gov/1OYcCnt. Make reference to Leonard Peltier #89637-132 and USP Coleman I. Voice your concern about Leonard’s medical treatment, and let the federal Bureau of Prisons know that the world is watching. Demand that Leonard receive the best possible care.

Keeping the tradition alive

SAN JOSE – Fred Short, AIM spiritual leader, John Malloy, 500-mile spiritual run organizer and Norman ‘Wounded Knee’ DeOcampo, a long-runner and AIM spiritual warrior, are keeping a tradition alive.
On Saturday, John Malloy and Wounded Knee were doing just that when they were at the 500-mile run training at Windy Hill Park, just outside of San Jose. Though the routes and the participants have changed since it began in 1978, the spirit of the run has remained the same.
Organized by co founder of the American Indian Movement, Dennis Banks in 1978 in order to call attention to 11 bills pending in Congress that were detrimental to native people. One bill that stood out was HR 9054-(Congressman Cunningham from Washington). This bill asked the president and congress to abrogate or terminate all Indian treaties. *
Spiritual runs follow the tradition of early Native American runners who were messengers. This 500-mile team is a multicultural group of individuals dedicated to preserving the tradition of spiritual running. Their principal message is “All Life is Sacred!”
The runners train together in different locations once a month. In June, the runners will run across California in the annual 500- Mile Spiritual Marathon. It’s a non-competitive relay where teams of runners participate in a running prayer by carrying a sacred staff. Runners will often pray for those who are sick or in prison. They also pray for the preservation of sacred Native American sites and Mother Earth. At the end of each day, the teams gather in a circle to drum, sing songs, participate in a ceremony and share stories.
Team members
The emphasis in the event is spirit, not only the participant’s running ability. Men and women runners from many cultures and of different ages run together in prayer. There are also non-running team members who support the runners by driving vehicles, preparing meals and setting up camp.
* At the same time the 1978 run was happening in California, The Longest Walk was entering Washington DC. There were legal issues that did not allow Dennis Banks to leave California, so he started the sacred run in California to be in tandem and add to the effect of the longest walk. The Longest Walk 5 – War on Drugs will leave California on February 13, 2016. The 2016 walk will bring much needed attention to sacred sights, mascot issues, domestic violence, drugs and other issues harmful to indigenous people.
