Zika virus in Brazil: “The Games must be postponed: Zika will spread via unexpected channels” | In English | EL PAÍS

“The clearest consequence is that you increase the risk of spreading the virus and the disease. With half-a-million people going to Rio for the Games – not just the usual visitors but people coming from every corner of the world – you open up the possibility of someone from each one of those places getting infected. Once the individual returns to his country, the local mosquitoes may then transmit the disease,” says Amir Attaran, a professor of epidemiology and public health at the University of Ottawa. Attaran co-authored the letter that more than 170 scientists have signed and sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Olympic Committee, urging them to postpone the upcoming Games – scheduled for August 5 to August 21 – until the Zika virus is no longer a threat. The letter also asks the organizations to consider moving the Games to another host country.

#MemorialDay was started by former slaves on May 1, 1865 | 3CHICSPOLITICO

Following the solemn dedication the crowd dispersed into the infield and did what many of us do on Memorial Day: they enjoyed picnics, listened to speeches, and watched soldiers drill. Among the full brigade of Union infantry participating was the famous 54th Massachusetts and the 34th and 104th U.S. Colored Troops, who performed a special double-columned march around the gravesite. The war was over, and Decoration Day had been founded by African Americans in a ritual of remembrance and consecration. The war, they had boldly announced, had been all about the triumph of their emancipation over a slaveholders’ republic, and not about state rights, defense of home, nor merely soldiers’ valor and sacrifice.

Avian Flu Diary: Detection Of Airborne H9 Nucleic Acid In Chinese Live Poultry Market

In China the link between live poultry markets (LPMs) and the spread (and reassortment of) avian flu strains is already well established, and it is easy to understand why. Large quantities of birds of varying species (chickens, ducks, geese, quail, and others) are brought in from different farms, housed together in cramped quarters, and then slaughtered (and often de-feathered) in open air booths as thousands of people walk by.  Not only does this expose humans to avian viruses, it facilitates the sharing of different avian flu subtypes (H5, H7, H9) among the birds, promoting continual reassortment and the creation of new clades, or subtypes.

A Girl from a Nairobi Slum Issues a Resonant Call for Post-Tribal Unity in Kenya – The New York Times

Shanize’s poem of unity: It is very sad what’s happening to our country. Imagine. A nation that is known to be safe – no violence – now turned into a nation living in fear. No security. Why does it have to come down to this? Religions. You have grown up together. The Kikuyu, M’Kamba, Luo, Abalughya and others. Why do you want to fight each other? As Kenyans, youth – Christian and Muslim – we should stand up as one and say no to violence, no to terrorism, no to instability and live as one. Let no one convince you to pick up a panga, a gun, grenades, bombs, and harm one another. No one has the right to take anyone’s life. Stand up. Get up. Show up. And say no to violence, no to terrorism, no to instability, and live as one.

Memorial Day–2016

Peace out, indeed Lobo!

In Saner Thought

Today is Memorial Day….a day set aside to remember our fallen service people during a time of war.

We build monuments to them and then they are soon forgotten…at least this day the public is forced to remember…..all the “sunshine patriots” come out of the woodwork…..and most will beat their chests like sex crazed primates….the sound and fury that signifies (what?)…….

But first a musical interlude….

This will be my only post of the day for I intend to honor our vets in my own way…..first I post this video of the group that I was part of during the Vietnam War…the LRRPs…..with the 9th Infantry Division….Mekong Delta….Republic of South Vietnam…..

Please take the time to learn about a group of men that did all asked of them and for the most part have been forgotten….something I hope to rectify…..

Israeli extremist settlers stormed al-Aqsa Mosque – PNN

Hordes of Israeli extremist settlers stormed on early Sunday morning the holy al-Aqsa Mosque, in Occupied Jerusalem, via the Maghareba Gate. The break-in was carried out under heavy escort by Israeli soldiers and special police troops. The fanatic Israeli settlers reportedly performed provocative rituals and chanted anti-Muslim slogans. A group of Muslim women have been maintaining vigil outside the al-Aqsa after the Israeli occupation police prevented them from entering the Mosque to perform their prayers. Tension has been running high in Occupied Jerusalem as Israeli fanatics stepped up assaults on the al-Aqsa Mosque. Observers said the break-ins make part of Israeli intents to Judaize the mosque and divide it spatially and temporally between Muslims and Jews.
