Old New York Police Surveillance Is Found, Forcing Big Brother Out of Hiding – The New York Times

“It’s the whole mother lode,” said Gideon Oliver, a civil rights lawyer who two years ago filed a lawsuit on behalf of a historian seeking records about a group that was a target of surveillance. The boxes, according to a written index, contain extensive files about the Black Panthers, the Nation of Islam and the Young Lords, as well as public demonstrations and civil unrest. Files on individuals are also among the documents; at least 15 boxes primarily contain photographs, Mr. Oliver said. The city’s Records Department, in a statement, said it was working to develop rules regarding public access to the documents, though no timetable or process has been set.

Not Politically Correct Reflections on Brexit | Inter Press Service

What then is the positive side of Brexit? While I do not see any for Britain or Europe, this could have a great influence on the tide of history. It could give birth to a new Europe, much more homogenous, formed by what could be called the Carolingian Europe. Charles the Great, in the 8th century, was able to unify most of Europe, and made France and Germany the basis of the kingdom. As Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, he also brought the south of Europe into the Empire. That Empire was based on the values of Christianity, with the strong support of the Pope. This new Europe will have to discuss foundational values to be viable, beyond its economic basis. And the errors made during this present version of “Europe”, will have to be discussed and avoided in the new one. Eventually it could become attractive to those who have left, who will have mean while found out that integration is a crucial issue in our globalized world. But more relevant, the turmoil and decline of England after Brexit, will be a extraordinarily message to other European countries. It will show that populism, nationalism and xenophobia, that the European integration was supposed to consign to the dustbin of history, can be useful tools for winning an election, but not to run a country. The England of the past will never come back, and reality will creep in. When England invaded China, to oblige its citizens to buy opium from the British Empire, there were 30 million British, and 323 million Chinese. Today Britain has over 60 million people, immigrants included, and China 1.374 millions. England was supposed to be a cradle of democracy. If a campaign of fear can win in a supposedly civilized country, it means more education must be done for a vibrant democracy. There is only one problem in this scenario of hopeful thinking, and it is the Germany to which Lord Hume was referring 50 years ago. His dominant Germany, from which the only way to be free was to become second to the US, will be in place and more reinforced by the end of the Great Kingdom, and the exit of Poland and other countries. Today’s Germany is not the Germany of Bonn, cofounder of Europe, with European statesman like Konrad Adenauer, Helmut Schmidt, Helmut Kohll, placing Europe at the top of their priorities. Today’s Germany Is the Germany of Berlin, with politicians basically intent to achieving German priorities. They will have to solve a fundamental problem: they want to run or do they want to integrate? And Brexit would have the advantage of also bringing this issue to the fore..

Living in Spain: Whether from Romania, Peru or Morocco, which way will the new Spaniards vote? | In English | EL PAÍS – Left!

Moroccans make up the bulk of the applicants who successfully obtain Spanish citizenship – 19,904 last year. Annas Merabet, a 43-year-old translator who works at the Madrid Superior Court of Justice and has been living in Spain for 24 years, says that Moroccans tend to vote left. “The more-educated ones lean toward Podemos, and the less-educated ones toward the Socialist Party, which they identify with Morocco’s Socialist Union of Popular Forces, while the PP to them is the equivalent of the Islamist parties, from the moderate ones all the way to DAESH,” she explains. Merabet also adds a thought about Islamist terrorism: “Nations’ involvement in the Syrian conflict makes them a target, and Spain is selling weapons. As long as Islam is not disassociated from Saudi Arabia, as long as Spain does not take Islamic religion seriously and control the training of imams, there will be jihadists.” Meanwhile, Bolivians, Peruvians, Ecuadorans and Latinos in general feel closer to Podemos and the Indignados movement, says José Luis Salvatierra, editor of Ocio Latino magazine. “We are more active, we’ve made many revolutions, we’re accustomed to taking streets and squares,” he says. But not everyone is convinced. “We can’t arrive here and start asking for homes, cars and a paid education; nor can we believe that we’ll get those things just because Podemos is promising it,” says a worker at the Colombian Chamber of Commerce in Madrid who declined to give her name. “What is happening here has already happened in Colombia: [Álvaro] Uribe won because the country was sick and tired of the narcs and corrupt liberalism. He made promises and he won. People here are sick of corruption and of the crisis, and they will vote with their gut.”

Blood center testing shows rapid Zika rise in Puerto Rico | CIDRAP

In what may be the most accurate real-time picture of Zika activity in Puerto Rico, a sensitive test for screening blood donations shows rapidly rising levels that could result in thousands of infections in pregnant women, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned today. At a media briefing, CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, said high levels of Zika activity in the US territory could result in dozens to hundreds of babies born with microcephaly. Puerto Rico has been using a highly sensitive investigational test since Apr 3 to screen local blood collections. Frieden said that though it’s not a stand-in for a serologic survey and doesn’t reflect a random sample, “it gives us a window to see what’s happening with infection rates.” Illnesses probably haven’t peaked yet, and disease activity—in view of dengue and chikungunya patterns—may last through summer and into the fall.

Russia’s Track and Field Team Barred From Rio Olympics – The New York Times – Let those who test clean now to compete!

Russian authorities have vehemently disputed Dr. Rodchenkov’s account, calling it the “slander of a turncoat.”It is unclear whether the I.O.C. can or will overturn the I.A.A.F.’s blanket ban when it meets on Tuesday. The I.O.C.’s president, Thomas Bach, has emphasized in recent weeks “the difficult decision between collective responsibility and individual justice,” suggesting the possibility that the I.O.C. can allow Russian athletes with clean histories to make it to Rio.

Alleged killer of British MP was a longtime supporter of the neo-Nazi National Alliance | Southern Poverty Law Center

According to records obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center Mair was a dedicated supporter of the National Alliance (NA), the once premier neo-Nazi organization in the United States, for decades. Mair purchased a manual from the NA in 1999 that included instructions on how to build a pistol. Mair, who resides in what is described as a semi-detached house on the Fieldhead Estate in Birstall, sent just over $620 to the NA, according to invoices for goods purchased from National Vanguard Books, the NA’s printing imprint. Mair purchased subscriptions for periodicals published by the imprint and he bought works that instruct readers on the “Chemistry of Powder & Explosives,” “Incendiaries,” and a work called “Improvised Munitions Handbook.” Under “Section III, No. 9” (page 125) of that handbook, there are detailed instructions for constructing a “Pipe Pistol For .38 Caliber Ammunition” from components that can be purchased from nearly any hardware store. The NA may be best-known for the work of its now-deceased founder, William Pierce, a former physics professor who also wrote racist novels. One, The Turner Diaries, tells the post-apocalyptic fictional story of a white man fighting in a race war that may have provided inspiration for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. The Daily Telegraph also reported that Mair was a subscriber to S. A. Patriot, a South African magazine published by White Rhino Club, a pro-apartheid group. The club describes that magazine’s editorial stance as opposed to “multi-cultural societies” and “expansionist Islam.” According to the Daily Telegraph, a January 2006 blog post attributed to the group described Mair as “one of the earliest subscribers and supporters of S. A. Patriot.”

Dozens of U.S. Diplomats, in Memo, Urge Strikes Against Syria’s Assad – The New York Times {New Neo-Con Spin to “force” US to start another failed Middle East War?}

{The Foreign Service is a corps of some 13,000 employees}

More than  have signed an internal memo sharply critical of the Obama administration’s policy in Syria, urging the United States to carry out military strikes against the government of President Bashar al-Assad to stop its persistent violations of a cease-fire in the country’s five-year-old civil war. The memo, a draft of which was provided to The New York Times by a State Department official, says American policy has been “overwhelmed” by the unrelenting violence in Syria. It calls for “a judicious use of stand-off and air weapons, which would undergird and drive a more focused and hard-nosed U.S.-led diplomatic process.”
