It should not surprise us that still, despite being caught or admitting to assaulting women, we give men the benefit of the doubt. After all, this country voted in a president who was accused of sexual assault by multiple women and admitted on tape to groping women without their consent, and still we say it’s “locker room talk” or just the way men are.
Nevada Death-Row Prisoner Released on Plea Deal After Medical Evidence Suggests No Crime Occurred | Death Penalty Information Center
Ha’im Al Matin Sharif, formerly known as Charles Robins, has been released from Nevada’s death row, nearly 30 years after he was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 11-month-old daughter, after medical evidence revealed that the baby died from infantile scurvy, rather than from physical abuse. Prosecutors agreed to amend the charges against Sharif and release him on time served after a prosecution doctor confirmed that Brittany Smith actually died of Barlow’s disease, a form of scurvy affecting infants. The child’s autopsy showed broken bones and hemorrhages, a local medical examiner listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma, and Las Vegas police accused Sharif of torturing her. “I was confused as to the nature of the injuries they described, because I had done nothing,” Sharif said. The child’s mother initially told police that Sharif was not abusive, but then testified against him. She later recanted her testimony and told Sharif’s appellate attorney that police had coerced her into providing false testimony implicating Sharif by threatening to take her other children away. During Sharif’s appeals, medical experts who reviewed the baby’s X-rays to rule out disease as the cause of death said the injuries were likely caused by scurvy.
Hurricane Season Is Here, and Trump Doesn’t Care | Dame Magazine
Our local and state governments owe it to the American people to help with storm preparation and cleanup, and to do that we need organizations that are up and running. Should this happen again, I know I cannot count on the actions of President Trump; I know I cannot count on the wisdom of Gov. Scott. I will have to find my own way through the storm.

A survivor of the Nagasaki bombing in 1945
A smiling face in such dismal surroundings, no one yet truly understood what had been done. The miracle survivors of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings have become known as the Hibakusha, meaning “explosion affected people” in Japanese. One survivor who was a little girl at the time, explained her experience, “I saw a bright blast, and I saw yellow and silver and orange and all sorts of colors that I can’t explain. Those colors came and attacked us, and the ceiling beams of the wooden school along with the glass from the window pane all shattered and blew away all at once.”

In case if any of you were wondering if I’m writing an angry piece, I would like to stress that you are absolutely right. This is an angry piece by a very angry black woman. I’m owning this and I’m not apologising for it either.FGM is a form of sexual assault against the girl child. It must be treated as such. Grabbing a child or even a baby who is just few days old, spreading her legs apart and touching her genitals is multiply violating even before the cutting begins. When the physical mutilation takes place, a deep rooted emotional wound is also created. When I talk about FGM I always refer to the child. I feel that that there’s a lack acknowledgment of the harm caused on a child by FGM which leads to a lack of support for those affected by such physical and emotional violence. There seems to be more focus on negotiating with ‘practicing communities.’In dialogues about any form of harm we need to think about who makes up the practicing community. The answer is very simple: globally we are all from communities where women and girls suffer gender-based violence, including FGM. Explain how FGM on black girls is barbaric but the blonde, blue-eyed girl who has designer vagina surgery in Harley street is an acceptable part of modern life.

Israel’s national wound that cannot heal | +972 Magazine
On Wednesday of this week, Amram will hold a demonstration in Jerusalem, which will focus on three demands: first, that the state formally recognize that kidnappings indeed took place, apologize to the families and the children, and hold an annual day of recognition to mark the affair. Secondly, the activists demand that the state invest the necessary resources to unite the families who were torn apart. Amram has already succeeded — through D.N.A. tests, perusing adoption files, and public activism — to unite two families with children who were kidnapped and given up for adoption. There is no doubt that the state, with all its resources, will be able to do more. And lastly, Amram demands the state retroactively acquit Rabbi Uzi Meshulam, who was sentenced to six years after being convicted of violent offenses as part of his struggle to raise awareness over the affair.

Finsbury Park Mosque attacker, identified as Darren Osborne, 47, being held for terrorism, attempted murder – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Mr Aidroos said he had helped tackle and detain the driver while other witnesses said an imam stepped in to ensure the man was not harmed.”We found that a group of people quickly started to collect around him, around the assailant and some tried to hit him either with kicks or punches,” imam Mohammed Mahmoud said.”By God’s grace we managed to surround him and to protect him from any harm.”One official said the Muslim cleric’s “bravery and courage” possibly saved the man’s life.
The Real Reason Senator Kamala Harris Made AG Jeff Sessions “Nervous” | Dame Magazine
What we saw during that exchange between Sen. Harris and the good ole boys, was White fragility personified. You see, most White people live in environments where they are shielded from race-based stress. They’re not used to be challenged by people of color. And so when they are confronted, they get triggered, defensive, hostile, guilty, fearful. It’s not hard to read these hearings in the context of an overwhelming fear of Black bodies, along with the paranoia of Sen. Harris’s clear authority as she refused to let Sessions filibuster through, taking up all of her time with his rambling non-answers. Viewed against the historical backdrop of anti-Black racism, it’s easy to see how low they’ll go when their White male dominance is challenged in any way—even by a Black person working strictly within the rules and policies of the machine that they created and control. It is no wonder they’re nervous: their undeserved power and unearned advantages are on life support.

Gunshots are the third leading killer of children in the US | Ars Technica
Nearly 1,300 children aged 0 to 17 are killed by gunshots each year in the US, and nearly 5,800 more suffer from non-lethal gunshot wounds, researchers estimate in a study published Monday in Pediatrics. In all, about 19 children die or are wounded each day from firearms, either by homicide, suicide, or unintentional shootings. Firearm-related deaths are now the third leading cause of death among US children and the second leading cause of injury-related deaths, behind car crashes. The grim national statistics are even more startling when considered from an international perspective: the US now accounts for 91 percent of all child firearm-related deaths (aged 0 to 14) among high-income countries.

Sadiq Khan – Mayor of London: The Finsbury Park imam’s heroism shows where London can find its strength | Opinion | The Guardian
I want to assure Londoners that this attack will in no way distract from other urgent work the police and emergency services are currently dealing with – including the vital recovery work at Grenfell Tower, the efforts to support the victims and local community in Kensington and the vital work ensuring we get justice. Like the terrible attacks in Westminster, London Bridge and in Manchester, the attack in Finsbury Park is an attack on us all – our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect. We must crack down on extremism of all types – whether the twisted ideology of Islamist terrorism, or other forms of extremism.
