The Copenhagen police said that the DNA test confirmed it was belonged to Kim Wall. The missing journalist’s torso was found on Monday afternoon and the police have said that the arms, legs, and head were removed deliberately.Walls went missing after boarding a homemade submarine on 10 August while working on a story about the sub’s owner, a Danish inventor. The sub’s owner became a suspect in her disappearance. On Monday, he turned himself into the police saying that an accident occurred while the journalist was interviewing him on-board the submarine. He said he later buried her at sea in an unspecified location before sinking the submarine. The submarine’s owner has been arrested for the death of Kim Walls and will be charged with murder or manslaughter.
One thing that bonds our extended family, besides our common ancestor, is that many have worked, often as clergy and as educators, for justice in their communities. While we do not purport to speak for all of Stonewall’s kin, our sense of justice leads us to believe that removing the Stonewall statue and other monuments should be part of a larger project of actively mending the racial disparities that hundreds of years of white supremacy have wrought. We hope other descendants of Confederate generals will stand with us.As cities all over the South are realizing now, we are not in need of added context. We are in need of a new context—one in which the statues have been taken down.Respectfully,William Jackson ChristianWarren Edmund ChristianGreat-great-grandsons of Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson
Duterte has lashed out at any criticism. He warned the European Union not to “fuck with us” after the European parliament passed a resolution expressing “grave concern over credible reports” that Philippine police were engaged in extrajudicial killings, a claim officers strongly deny. Despite the criticism, Duterte has remained a popular leader and polls have shown continued domestic support for his war on drugs. But the death of Santos appears to be a turning point. Three government bodies, the department of justice, the senate, and the Commission on Human Rights, launched investigations.Santos’s last words have become viral on social media and on Monday protesters gathered at the People’s Power Monument in Manila to voice their outrage.
These are volatile times, rife with both grave dangers and progressive possibilities. To help prepare for the long pro-democracy and antiracist struggle ahead of us, ChangeLab is sharing this small downloadable/printable discussion guide, written by Scot Nakagawa and Suzanne Pharr. He said it was last June during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan the young men “lost their fear of dying. I think they already knew what they going to do. From that time on they started being really sweet to their mother and families. They were at home a lot and were very attentive. If their mother had a problem, they were there straight away to help,” the relative added. This behavior has been often noted among radicalized young Muslims before an attack. However, none of these changes raised the alarm among the Muslim community in Ripoll. The families and friends of the young men did not speak out either.“We thought it was a stage – that they were growing up. We even thought there was something positive about it.”In the final few months of their lives, the young men even became less strict about their religion – a practice known as taqiyya, which involves hiding religious beliefs – in this case to avoid raising suspicion.
“All fair-minded people must stand against the hateful violence and aggression that seems to be growing across our country. But we must also recognize that on the Internet, any tactic used now to silence neo-Nazis will soon be used against others, including people whose opinions we agree with.”
(Not the acts of an innocent person but of someone who caused the death of another!) Peter Madsen told the court that Kim Wall, who has been missing since 11 August, died in an accident onboard his vessel, and that he dumped her body in the sea.
Here is a collection of tweets about the latest terror attack in Barcelona. It includes a very insightful twitter thread by The New York Times Correspondent Rukmini Callimachi.
3. According to my source, police learned from rental car company that attackers had tried to rent a large truck. See ISIS' instructions: pic.twitter.com/T1V2S2dj94
5. At that point, they decided to rent 2 smaller vans. Investigators then tied men to building in Alcanar that blew up Wed. Check out damage pic.twitter.com/iTdvJha5bV
In the answers he then gave to questions from reporters — more of a fit of rage than a press conference — he blasted the so-called “alt-left,” saying it was just as bad as the white supremacists, many of whom refer to themselves as the “alt-right.” It was a comment that didn’t just demonize the counterdemonstrators, it also trivialized the violence displayed by the neo-Nazis. Trump spoke of “blame on both sides” and claimed that among the hate-filled white nationalists and anti-Semites, there were also many people who were simply there to peacefully protest the removal of the statue of General Robert E. Lee. The press conference lasted just over 20 minutes, but by the time it had ended, it was clear that the president was indeed guilty of playing down the actions of neo-Nazis.Two former presidents, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, issued a joint statement condemning hatred “in all forms.” Five of the country’s top military leaders saw a need to issue clear statements condemning racism, in direct opposition to their commander-in-chief.
