We Hate Our Paying Customers

Let’s check on Dan Snyder, shall we? The Washington [Racist Names] have been in first place in their division for most of the year. Their QB, however, broke his leg. Yet the team has been adamant that it will not sign the best QB available for political reasons. Instead, they have started infamous bust Colt McCoy. Only McCoy also broke his leg, meaning that the Snyders finished out a critical division game with…the Sanchize! Let’s do a comparison here:

McCoy 27 GS 6.0 AY/A 29 TD/26 INT

Sanchize 72 GS 5.7 AY/A 86 TD/87 INT

Kaepernick 58 GS 7.3 AY/A 72 TD/30 INT

This is…not close! And as for the most recent semi-excuse offered for NFL teams — “OK, maybe he was blackballed, but now it’s rational not to sign him because he’s rusty” — this has also been conveniently revealed to be complete bullshit. Here is a comprehensive list of games McCoy and Sanchez had started since Kaepernick last played before being handed jobs this year:

McCoy was last a regular starter for the 2011 Cleveland Browns, who went 4-12. Sanchez was last a regular starter 6-10 2012 Jets. So, sorry, this rationalization just collided with the lineman’s ass. And, of course, it’s even worse than that. While the Snyders consider peaceful protests of police violence beyond the pale, here’s what they are perfectly fine with:

The circumstances surrounding Reuben Foster and Colin Kaepernick have basically zero similarities, except that one is employed and the other is not, and the franchise that decided to immediately snap up an accused domestic abuser before the ink was dry on his booking sheet also hired Mark Sanchez — who is basically a walking punchline as a quarterback — while sneering in Kaepernick’s general direction.

Connecting these two cases isn’t a reach. The Washington Redskins decide who is on their roster and who is not. Tuesday, they decided Foster, arrested over the weekend for the second time on a domestic violence charge, was worthy of their employ. Last week — and, honestly, probably a year or more ago — they decided Kaepernick, who has knelt for the national anthem in an effort to bring attention to police brutality and other issues that disproportionately affect African Americans, was not.

Where to start?

As an organization, an NFL team has a chance to set an example of what’s good and right. That could be because you conjure up a behind-the-scenes marketing strategy to win over your fan base, or because you possess an actual moral compass. Either way, your fans and your community would understand they can trust your motives and your moves.

The Redskins don’t do that. Ever. They’re shady at best, vile at worst. Tuesday night, they issued a statement attributed to Doug Williams, the senior vice president of player personnel, outlining why they made the waiver claim that brought Foster into their fold just two days after he was cut by San Francisco because of his latest arrest. If I didn’t know better, I’d think Williams was handed a sheet of paper with “his” words written on them and then told, “We’re saying you said this,” and he either had to accept those conditions or quit.

Speaking of contempt of a more routine variety, we could talk about the Mariners trading Jean Segura for a Gritty doll and a half-dozen Subway cheesesteaks, but we’ll leave that to another post.

Protesters March After UNC Proposes $5.3M Building to House Toppled Confederate Monument

No $ or statues for racism and rebellion!

Yesterday, December 3, massive crowds gathered at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to oppose the reinstallation of a Confederate monument called “Silent Sam,” after it was toppled by activists in August.

The highly disputed statue fell on the eve of the fall semester as protesters cheered, “Whose campus? Our campus!” Hoisted in 1913 (48 years after the end of the Civil War), the bronze sculpture was funded by the Daughters of the Confederacy to commemorate UNC students who fought as Confederate soldiers. The Raleigh News & Observer reported that UNC spent $390,000 last year on security for the statue.

Yesterday afternoon, UNC Chancellor Carol Folt and the Board of Trustees announced their proposal that Silent Sam would be moved from storage to a newly constructed “free-standing building with state-of-the-art security” with an estimated construction cost of $5.3 million, with an additional $800,000 in yearly maintenance.

Community coalitions Take Action Chapel Hill, Defend UNC, and UNC Campus Y organized a protest opposing the decision for the same night, with a Facebook event that received around 2,000 RSVPs.

In the heat of finals season, students showed up en masse for the action beginning at 7, where Jewish leaders lit a menorah for the second night of Hanukkah, according to the Duke Chronicle. UNC students, students from nearby Duke University, university faculty, and local residents were all present.

“UNC prides itself on diversity and inclusion, and having that statue on this campus obviously shows that it doesn’t stand for diversity and inclusion,” Leeza Mason, a UNC senior spoke at the protest, according to the Chronicle. “That statue stands for racism, the Confederacy and basically keeping slavery on this campus.”

Some speeches were interrupted with jeers from members of the crowd in favor of Silent Sam’s reinstallation. Protesters shouted back, “Racist, go home!” and continued their speeches.

The speeches continued for about an hour before they began their march toward the statue’s previous podium. Around 20 police officers, donning riot shields and helmets, stood around the area, and metal barricades created a wide border around the pedestal.

As protesters encroached on the barricade, officers pushed back, at one point grabbing a banner reading “total liberation from domination” from crowd members. The situation de-escalated as protesters walked away from the barricade and marched toward the administrative building.

Graduate student workers and faculty denounced the decision by announcing a strike until Chancellor Folt reverses the proposal. In September, 54 of UNC’s Black faculty members, supported by over 400 non-Black faculty members, penned a letter urging the university to permanently remove the monument, saying, “A monument to white supremacy, steeped in a history of violence against Black people, and that continues to attract white supremacists, creates a racially hostile work environment and diminishes the University’s reputation worldwide.”

Over 30 journalists – including Jamal Khashoggi – have been murdered so far this year. With the help of colleagues and relatives, or in their own words and pictures, we pay tribute to some of them here.

A trainee producer and presenter at Radio Azadi in Afghanistan, Durrani was one of at least nine journalists killed by a suicide bomb while making her way to work in Kabul.

Opinion | I’m a Democrat and a Feminist. And I Support Betsy DeVos’s Title IX Reforms. – The New York Times “And a pretty good liar to get noticed by DeVos” Would have you believe most claims of abuse are “made up”

Consider this scenario: A young black man enrolls at a state university in California on an athletic scholarship. He’s the first person in his family to go to college. His teammate’s white ex-girlfriend matches with him on Tinder, comes to his apartment, has sex with him and, they both agree, returns three days later to have consensual sex. Weeks later, the young woman, who has reconciled with her boyfriend, claims the Tinder match raped her during the first sexual encounter. The Tinder Match adamantly denies this. Her boyfriend, who is also black, says she is lying. There is no hearing, no chance for the accused to ask her questions.

In September the US State Department under White House orders pulled US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff and other personnel from the region citing local violence and security concerns. CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD, has gone on record saying he disagrees with the decision. ‘Gender violence pushed Jewish, Palestinian women into a corner — together’

Women across Israel were set to strike to protest the government’s inaction toward gender violence. Samah Salaime, a prominent feminist activist, speaks about building solidarity between Jewish and Palestinian women and why this moment feels so urgent.

Tens of thousands of women in Israel were expected to participate in a general strike and demonstrations across the country on Tuesday, protesting the government’s inaction toward gender-based violence, spurred by the recent murders of two teenage girls.

[tmwinpost]

Over 50 Jewish and Arab feminist organizations, comprising the Red Flag Coalition, declared a national “state of emergency” and organized the protests. Demonstrations are set to take place in dozens of locations around the country, culminating with a large rally in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square on Tuesday evening. Hundreds of organizations, corporations, and municipalities have declared their support for the protests.

Since the beginning of the year, 24 women have been murdered by a partner, family member, or acquaintance. Many had informed the police prior to their deaths that they were concerned for their safety. According to the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO), 200,000 women in Israel are thought to be victims of domestic abuse, with around half a million children witnessing violence in their homes.

+972 writer Samah Salaime has been one of the central organizers in the struggle against gender violence in Palestinian society inside Israel for years. She spoke to +972 about how the coalition of organizations came together, how it overcame tensions between Jewish and Palestinian feminists, and why this moment feels so urgent.

What was the impetus for the strike?

The strike is happening because of the murder of 24 women this year alone, half of them Arab women. It is happening because the majority of cases of murder of Arab women remain unsolved. It is happening because after the killing of 16-year-old Yara Ayoub in the north and 13-year-old Sylvana Tsegai in Tel Aviv we could no longer remain apathetic. It was time to act.

Crowdfund banner 600px

The strike began as an act of protest organized by a few female social activists which didn’t stand much of a chance. A coalition of Palestinian and Jewish women’s groups was formed a few months ago, in order to organize a huge protest in front of the Knesset. We had planned to build a three-day protest camp with an art exhibit, performances, and gatherings. Then reality slapped us in the face with the murders of Yara and Sylvana. That’s when we decided to declare a state of emergency across the country.

Why is this happening now?

Israel’s extremist and chauvinistic government has gone too far in ignoring gender-related issues. It has opposed all feminist struggles that stood a chance of succeeding. It declared that it would take positive steps and then did the exact opposite. This government annulled granting of custody to single mothers with infants. It killed a law to establish a committee that would look into the government’s handling of issues related to the murder of women.

This is the same government that demanded a religious authority be present on committees deciding whether to allow women to have an abortion. It is the same government that supports gender separation and the exclusion of women in the public sphere. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the announcement, on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, no less, that the government would freeze an already approved NIS 250 million ($67 million) plan to deal with violence against women. There were Palestinian and Jewish women who were worried about merging struggles, but the harsh reality pushed us into a corner — together.

We are dealing with a government that has a gender violence problem. Not only does it oppress 5 million Palestinians in the occupied territories, it violently and systematically oppresses Jewish and Arab women [on both sides of the Green Line].

What do you hope the strike will do?

We want to raise awareness over the phenomenon of the murder of women in Israeli and Arab society. It sounds naive and banal, but we want people to understand that gender-based crimes have nothing to do with family honor, immigration, culture, or religion. Men murder women because they believe in the supremacy of men over women. Through violence men are able to maintain their power.

We cannot ignore the fact that 50 percent of women who are murdered in Israel are Arab. Israeli authorities are averse to put Arab murderers — of Arab women — on trial, letting them roam free. This goes to show that the life of an Arab woman is worth less than that of a Jewish woman — and Arab women are paying the price. It is a known fact that women in conflict zones, as well as women belonging to minority groups, pay a heavy price for militarism in society.

What does a successful strike look like?

Success means Rabin Square is full to the brim with Arab and Jewish women and men. It means the government declares it will enact a national plan to deal with violence against women. It means holding every single Knesset member who has supported anti-women legislation accountable.

The strike is the culmination of years of feminist activity. But the struggle against violence against women has been taking place for quite some time among Palestinian women inside Israel. How has your struggle influenced the larger movement in the country?

I am leading a dedicated struggle through Na’am, an organization we founded 10 years ago to support Arab women and combat gender violence. Palestinian women have been an integral part of every struggle since the 90s. In the past, Arab men took pride in the murder of women, while the legal system handed out light sentences to murderers for so-called cultural reasons.

Today you will not find a single religious or political figure who dare use offensive or chauvinistic language. I think we are slowly raising the bar; Israeli society can no longer ignore Palestinian women activists. We translated our struggle into Hebrew and showed how discrimination and neglect leads to the murder of women. Jewish women want a country that enforces the law. Guess what? So do we.

What was it like for Palestinian and Jewish Israeli women to combine struggles?

I had many concerns about cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians here. I worry that I will pay a heavy price for working with Jewish women, some of whom identify as Zionists, that the movement will be used to present Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East, that our decision to work together will be painful and lead to criticism from both right and left. The pain and political differences are with us everywhere we go, but I hope that the strike will succeed in merging struggles between Israelis and Palestinians and spark a larger protest movement against the violent oppression of the Palestinian people.

Diamond Smuggling Scandal Spotlights Shadowy Israeli Tycoon

It’s a stunning downturn for one of Israel’s most well-known tycoons. Born in the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, the 62-year-old Leviev immigrated to Israel as a youth in 1971 and began working as an apprentice in a polishing plant in Israel’s then-booming diamond industry. His meteoric rise saw him later establishing a plant of his own, and striking deals in Angola and Russia that briefly undercut the DeBeers diamond giant. He later branched out to real estate, construction and chemicals, with his Africa-Israel holding and investment company becoming a powerful player in the Israeli market and establishing Leviev as a precursor to a wave of Jewish oligarchs from the former Soviet Union who have become power brokers in Israel.

Though his net worth is estimated at more than $1 billion, Leviev suffered heavy losses in recent years because of his massive investment in Russia, where he is known to enjoy strong government support. Leviev, who moved to London a decade ago and recently relocated to Moscow, denies any allegations of impropriety and is currently negotiating terms of his return with Israeli police. But insiders say that even if he hasn’t been formally charged with a crime, his mere association with the suspects accused of smuggling some $80 million worth of diamonds hidden in briefcases over several years could be devastating to his brand.
