John Bolton says he knew in advance Huawei executive would be arrested

LOL – but he did not tell his boss who was meeting with Chinese leader – not cool John to overplay your hand and make your boss look like a bigger clown than he already is!

National security adviser said US had long been concerned about role of Chinese tech companies in theft of technological knowhow

The US national security adviser, John Bolton, has said he knew in advance that a top Chinese telecoms executive would be arrested in Canada to face extradition to the US, in what is escalating into a major diplomatic incident.

Beijing is calling the release of Meng Wanzhou, the the global chief financial officer of the vast Huawei corporation, and demanded Ottawa and Washington provide reasons for her arrest in Vancouver on Saturday.

Washington show NFL teams would rather lose than sign Colin Kaepernick

3038.jpg?width=300&quality=85&auto=forma

Washington were pushing for the playoffs until two of their quarterbacks went down injured. But they have ignored a perfectly solid replacement

Colin Kaepernick will never play in the NFL again, that much was made clear this week. Washington’s decision to sign the lightweight talents of Mark Sanchez and Josh Johnson over Kaepernick, a week after claiming Reuben Foster – a man arrested twice in the last year for domestic violence – on waivers and announcing to the world that it was prioritizing winning football games above all else, is as shameful as it is predictable.

Washington plucked Johnson, who last threw a pass in the NFL in 2011, out of obscurity this week to back up Sanchez after Colt McCoy’s season ended with a broken fibula. McCoy previously replaced Alex Smith, who is out for the season with a broken leg suffered in Week 11.

Earliest plague strain found in Sweden holds clue to stone age migration from east

1454.jpg?width=300&quality=85&auto=forma

Pandemic could explain crash in European population 5,500 years ago and influx of people from Eurasian steppe

An ancient strain of the plague found in a woman buried in Sweden may be the fatal signature of a devastating pandemic that swept through stone age farmers and set the stage for a massive migration into Europe from the east.

Evidence for the grim scenario came to light when scientists ran genetic tests on a 20-year-old woman from a rural farming community who was among 78 people buried in a passage grave in Gökhem in western Sweden.

Serena Williams’s US meltdown was handled badly all round, says McEnroe

Serena Williams has “nothing to apologise for” after her meltdown at this year’s US Open, according to John McEnroe. The man who probably had more than most to be sorry about during a stormy career reckons his compatriot was at fault for the way she verbally abused Carlos Ramos in the final at Flushing Meadows in September but “so was the umpire”.

• ‘She was wrong and so was the umpire,’ he adds
• McEnroe in London for final appearance at Champions event

Serena Williams has “nothing to apologise for” after her meltdown at this year’s US Open, according to John McEnroe. The man who probably had more than most to be sorry about during a stormy career reckons his compatriot was at fault for the way she verbally abused Carlos Ramos in the final at Flushing Meadows in September but “so was the umpire”.

Speaking at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Thursday before what he says will be his last appearance at the annual Champions Tennis tournament, McEnroe said Williams’s emotions probably got to her. He did not, however, think the incident – which cost her the title – would unsettle her at the Australian Open, where she will return for the first time since winning her 23rd major there two years ago while seven weeks pregnant.

Pamela Anderson’s political activism – from French riots to broken capitalism

2092.jpg?width=300&quality=85&auto=forma

The former Baywatch star has published a detailed defence of France’s gilets jaunes movement – we should not be surprised by her leftist analysis

Following protests that have taken place in France over the past few weeks and riots that saw hundreds arrested in Paris, the gilets jaunes or yellow vests movement has found a vocal, and to some, surprising supporter in Pamela Anderson.

Earlier this week the Canadian-American actor and activist, who now lives in France, attempted to explain the aim of the movement in a series of tweets and in a blogpost on her website.

What led Chicago to shutter dozens of majority-black schools? Racism | Eve Ewing | Opinion | The Guardian

In other words, the question of whether something is racist may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. We might consider events and policies racist not because an individual is hurling epithets or explicitly trying to harm black people but because they result in the systematic disenfranchisement of black people and harm to black children – regardless of intent – and because they are bound up in the perpetuation of historical policies rooted in more explicit racism. And this, in part, is why people fight so hard for their schools: because the fight is actually about a great deal more than just one building.

Corbyn urges support for his Brexit plan as Commons vote nears

Labour leader says ‘put all options on the table’ including a people’s vote if no general election is possible

Jeremy Corbyn called on MPs of all parties to vote down Theresa May’s deal and back his “alternative plan” for Brexit, as second-referendum campaigners urged him to get “off the fence” and endorse a fresh public vote.

Labour’s leader, writing in the Guardian, said that the party’s “comprehensive customs union plan” should be one of the options on the table if the party could not force a general election – in addition to a second referendum.
