Nathan Phillips said he was trying to keep peace between some Kentucky high school students and a black religious group that was also on the National Mall on Friday. The students were participating in the March for Life, which drew thousands of anti-abortion protesters, and Phillips was attending the Indigenous Peoples March happening the same day.
A Catholic school has apologized after a group of its students harassed an elderly Native American while he was singing. Videos of the widely condemned incident have gone viral on social media.
For some who attended the Women’s Unity Rally in Manhattan’s Foley Square Saturday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s speech was the highlight. “Justice is not a concept we read about in a book,” she said. “Justice is about the water we drink. Justice is about the air we breathe.” [ more › ]
WASHINGTON, DC —Shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday, tens of thousands of peoplehad already gathered for the Women’s March at Federal Plaza. As they waited in place for the march to begin, people milled around, checking out the creative signage that has come to define protest in the Trump era. Vendors had set up shop…
Video appeared to show students from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky surround the elder, Nathan Phillips, outside the Lincoln Memorial. The high school has condemned the students’ actions.
This student is a little racist fk with no respect, no home training. Is this what is being taught at Covington Catholic School?
The Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High in Kentucky rebuked the students’ actions and said they could potentially be expelled as a result.
A Kentucky Catholic school may take disciplinary action against their students after a group of the MAGA hat–wearing teenage boys taunted a Native American elder at the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, DC, on Friday.
Several viral videos show the young men, nearly all of whom are white and wearing pro-Trump gear, chanting at and mocking the man on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
One of the teens can be seen standing face-to-face with the elder, smirking and saying nothing, while the man sang and played a drum.
The indigenous protester was identified by Indian Country Today as Nathan Phillips, a member of the Omaha Nation and a Vietnam War veteran. He reportedly hosts a ceremony each year honoring Native American veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and is also the keeper of a sacred pipe.
Kaya Taitano, a 26-year-old student from Guam who told BuzzFeed News she filmed the videos of Phillips. “You can tell he has power in his being,” she said in a phone interview.
In an interview with Taitano following the incident that she uploaded to her Instagram, Phillips said he wished he could see those teens “put that energy into making this country really great, helping those that are hungry.”
“I heard them saying, ‘Build that wall, build that wall,’” said Phillips, who could not be immediately reached for comment. “You know, this is indigenous lands. We’re not supposed to have walls here — we never did for millennia, before anybody else came here.”
Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said he could not support such an offer. “First, President Trump and Senate majority leader McConnell must open the government today,” Durbin said in a statement. “Second, I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate. Third, I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues,” Durbin said.
People trafficking for his wall – holding country and litteraly thousands of people hostage for his ego! U.S. President Donald Trump proposed an immigration deal on Saturday in a bid to end a 29-day partial government shutdown, after House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other leading Democrats had already said they rejected the plan.
While flashy liberal freshmen soak up the attention, more moderate Democrats who won G.O.P. districts in November are searching for compromise to end the shutdown.
