Despite weeks of protest in Hungary, it’s clear now the PM can rely on support within the EU to shield him from criticism
As a Hungarian living in Berlin, I’d watched the protests against Viktor Orbán from afar – until, like almost everyone I know, I went home for Christmas. Recent months have been very special for many people in my native country. Thousands have been demonstrating against the government, the ruling party Fidesz and its leader. Among the cheerful crowds in Budapest, I felt the significance of these events for myself too.
Many Hungarians are still waiting for some kind of ‘saviour’ from the outside. But no one has come
The EU’s frustration with Westminster erupted into the open as Donald Tusk warned of a “special place in hell” for politicians who promoted Brexit “without even a sketch of a plan”, just 24 hours before his crunch meeting with Theresa May in Brussels.
The European council president insisted that the EU was not “making any new offer” to Britain, and demanded a “realistic suggestion” from the prime minister on how to end the impasse.
This bill was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and House Committee on Homeland Security which will consider it before sending it to the House floor for consideration.
Nancy Smash is straight savage………… I love it so much
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pushed back hard against President Trump’s most self-destructive tendencies and general ridiculousness since taking back the majority in the House. Pelosi seems to have loosened up with a more freewheeling approach to battling with the president not just on policy, but everywhere, capturing the hearts and (maybe) minds of everyday voters in her own party. At Tuesday’s State of the Union, Pelosi took the dark art of performative piss-take to another level when she literally clapped back at the president’s face by way of rebuttal for Trump’s disingenuous call for comity and unity.
“We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good,” Trump said.

Racism and outright lies are fine to sell your right-wingnut junk! NOT!
At this point, it’s common knowledge that Fox News is obsessed with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Hosts on the network love to be outraged by her ~radical~ platform and gross insubordination. Today, Media Matters for America noticed that a guest on Fox Business had some extremely interesting thoughts about Alexandria…
When the so-called Republican “moderate” made the announcement that she would confirm Kavanaugh, she gave a 43-minute long, condescending speech explaining her decision to do so. Collins praised his “judicial temperament” and said she was “alarmed and disturbed” by those who argued that supporting an accused sexual assaulter was “condoning sexual assault.” A few days later, Collins said that her decision to confirm Kavanaugh was very “difficult.” Lucrative, too.
Abortion later in pregnancy is not common, and this law will not make it more common—just more accessible. The RHA does not mean that abortion after 24 weeks is permissible for any reason, despite how some conservative lawmakers have characterized the legislation. The circumstances that lead to late abortion are unique are often times very difficult for my patients. My job is to treat them with compassion. We should all treat patients like this with compassion instead of criminalizing them.
It appears that Roger Stone, who was recently arrested for crime time and then promptly released on $250,000 bail, has been spotted at a nail salon by actor Marlee Matlin. He is wearing a cape, possibly to hide his crimes under.
Shadow foreign secretary also rebukes Maduro’s record in speech on Labour policy
The shadow foreign secretary, Emily Thornberry, broke with the European big power consensus by saying it was wrong to recognise Juan Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela, saying she did not wish to strike a pose to help Venezuela, but do something realistic and practical to secure fresh elections.
She was answering questions at the end of a major speech in which she promised a hallmark of a Labour-run foreign office would be a consistent preparedness to criticise human rights abuses by Britain’s powerful allies including Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt.
