the people who most want to be there — Iran’s constellation of opposition groups — have reportedly all been overlooked, leaving many wondering what precisely the point of the exercise is. “What is the logic of seeking to contain Iran when you don’t engage with the country’s opposition?” asked Asso Hassan Zadeh, the deputy secretary-general of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (Iran), one of the main Kurdish opposition groups based in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq. Hassan Zahdeh said his organization had approached the US consul general in Erbil on behalf of a coalition of “the most important” Iranian Kurdish political organizations for an invitation this week but had not heard back from him. In a letter to the consul shared with Al-Monitor, Hassan Zadeh wrote, “In spite of the broad character of the title and the program of the said conference, no one doubts that the Islamic Republic and the future of Iran is the main stake of the conference. … It is unfortunate that the main interested party, namely the Iranian people, is not somehow associated with the international discussions on Iran.”

As well they should – down with neo-fascists! France recalled its ambassador to Italy on Thursday, a remarkable diplomatic split between neighbors and European Union allies, after what it described as “repeated, baseless” attacks by Italian political leaders against France.

Gian Franco Kasper said dictators make good event hosts
75-year-old once said women shouldn’t ski jump
The president of the International Ski Federation has apologised after an interview in which he questioned climate change and said he preferred countries run by dictators to host competitions.
In an interview published in the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger earlier this week, Gian Franco Kasper said “dictators can organize [big] events … without asking the people’s permission”. He added that “from the business side, I say: I just want to go to dictatorships, I do not want to argue with environmentalists.”

Social media site announces action following criticism from British teenager’s father

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said “no graphic self-harm image” would in future be allowed on the platform.
“Neeson had laid bare the logic of lynching: “In many instances, when white men enact racist violence on black men, they imagine – or pretend – that they are committing this violence on white women’s behalf.” Neeson has centred himself in a woman’s trauma and sought to reinforce his masculinity through the use of indiscriminate violence.”
The response to Liam Neeson’s recent revelations of his plans to randomly kill a Black man as an act of revenge has now switched to the impact on the actor’s career. But as Kristel Tracey writes, it reflects the fact there is still much work to do around toxic white masculinity and structural racism
You have to wonder what was going through Liam Neeson’s mind when he volunteered the story of the time he walked the streets with a “cosh” looking for a “black b******” to kill.
From the man who once referred to the #MeToo movement as a “bit of a witchhunt”, Neeson was recalling the time he responded to news of the rape of a close friend by a black man.
“I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody – I’m ashamed to say that – and I did it…
Mind-boggle of the week: USDA buys pork from JBS The Washington Post reports that the USDA has committed about $5 million of bailout funds to buy 1.8 million pounds of pork products from the Brazilian meatpacker, JBS. The bailout funds were supposed to help U.S. commodity producers who lost sales because of the tariff disputes with China. JBS is the biggest meat seller in the U.S. It employs 73,000 people here. Maybe the USDA thought it was an American company? Globalization in action…
