Anti-English sentiment in Ireland had healed. But Brexit has brought it all flooding back | Una Mullally

Karen Bradley’s gaffe exemplifies the political ignorance about our island that has fanned unhelpful hostility

Brexit has created many nightmares, but a particularly unpleasant one is the rise of anti-English sentiment in Ireland. British-Irish relations have not just cooled on a diplomatic and political level, but among the Irish population. The anti-Englishness born of past oppression had, we thought, been confined to the past but has resurfaced. And whose fault is that? The emotional trauma of Ireland’s treatment by Britain, and England in particular, is usually delicately contained but now it is spilling over.

I grew up in Dublin, far removed from the conflict north of the border but I went to an Irish-speaking secondary school, where boys wore balaclavas to school Gaelic football matches for a laugh, and “IRA” was carved into desks with maths compasses. As the painful peace process concluded, and the Good Friday agreement came into force, God Save the Queen was sung in Croke Park, the hallowed ground of Gaelic sports, and the Queen spoke in Irish at a state dinner in Dublin Castle. It seemed as if anti-British sentiment was at least covered over with a healing gauze if not completely healed. But Brexit, and the behaviour and rhetoric of British politicians, the tone of the trightwing British press, and the constant stream of ignorance about our island from across the Irish Sea, has ripped that bandage off. Everything is exposed now, and it’s a wound that has been, and can be again, mortal.

Anti-vaxxers, the Momo challenge … why lies spread faster than facts | Books | The Guardian

Today’s threat to the truth also comes from a social media whose algorithms prefer virality to veracity, where lies spread faster than facts. It comes from ideologues happy to dismiss overwhelming scientific evidence, whether on climate change or the safety of vaccination, as breezily as those who once insisted that the Earth was flat. It comes from a technology now so advanced that it can create false evidence, in the form of deepfake video, audio and text.

Inoreader – An Unvaccinated Child in Oregon Recently Had Tetanus

“The boy required 57 days of inpatient acute care, including 47 days in the intensive care unit. The inpatient charges totaled $811,929 (excluding air transportation, inpatient rehabilitation, and ambulatory follow-up costs). One month after inpatient rehabilitation, he returned to all normal activities, including running and bicycling. Despite extensive review of the risks and benefits of tetanus vaccination by physicians, the family declined the second dose of DTaP and any other recommended immunizations.”

American public support for Israel hits decade low: Gallup poll

Bethlehem/PNN/

The American people’s support for Israel has fallen to its lowest level in the past decade, a new poll has found, indicating that President Donald Trump’s many controversial decisions to boost ties with Tel Aviv is alienating people back at home.

The new Gallup poll released Wednesday found that 59 percent of Americans said they were “more sympathetic” towards Israel on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

This marks a sharp decline from last year, when 65 percent of the American public sided with the Tel Aviv regime.

The whopping six-percent drop over a one-year period is the biggest in the history of the yearly poll, which was first conducted in 2001.

The decline was seen among both Democrats and Republicans, however, followers of Trump’s own party posted the sharpest decrease.

While among Democrats, feelings of sympathy for Israel went down by a total of six percent, Republican support fell by 11 percent.

The staggering drop in support among Republican comes in contrast to Trump’s deeply close relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The percentage of Republicans saying they sympathize more with Israel in the conflict fell from an all-time high of 87 percent in 2018 to 76 percent today,” the poll said.

The percentage of people who identified as political independents remained the same over the last year, with 60% sympathizing more with Israel.

The number of Americans who said they supported Palestine remained unchanged at 21 percent.

Last year’s survey came amid Washington’s preparations to proceed with Trump’s order to relocate the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds, a move that infuriated Palestinians and prompted mixed responses in Washington.

Trump officially recognized al-Quds as Israel’s capital in December 2017, leading Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to halt US-brokered talks with Israel while questioning Washington’s ability to stay unbiased.

Trump in response cut American aid to the PA, withdrawing fund from such institutions as the East Jerusalem Hospital Network as well as several joint Israeli-Palestinian agencies.

The poll comes amid controversy surrounding freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has been forced by the Democratic Party to apologize for comments that implied wealthy Americans bought politicians through the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC.

The Minnesota lawmaker, one of the first female Muslim members of Congress, has also supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Israeli regime.
