Watch: J.D. Vance Cruelly Pushes for Domestic Abusers’ Right to Guns | The New Republic

J.D. Vance argued Tuesday that access to firearms should only be restricted for those convicted of a crime—meaning that those under restraining orders should still be able to purchase weapons.

During a press conference in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Vance was asked what he thought about restricting firearms access for those convicted of stalking. Vance answered the question, and then some.

“Well look, I think that we certainly don’t want violent criminals to have access to weapons, and that includes people, I think, who have been convicted of stalking. But I think it’s important to say convicted,” Vance replied.

“And what a lot of those of us who are pro-Second Amendment, what we don’t want is, you know, we don’t want somebody to have their gun rights taken away when they haven’t actually been to court of law. Whether it’s a First Amendment right, a Second Amendment right, you are entitled to due process in this country,” Vance explained.

“Certainly, people who are convicted of a crime, they should not be able to carry a firearm. But people who have not gone through due process, they still have their rights,” he said.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court upheld a New York law prohibiting domestic abusers under restraining orders from carrying firearms, with one lone dissenter: Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas argued that the government could not “strip the Second Amendment right of anyone subject to a protective order—even if he has never been accused or convicted of a crime.”

In the majority opinion, Chief Supreme Court Justice Roberts found that the New York law was in line with constitutional law. “Our tradition of firearm regulation allows the government to disarm individuals who present a credible threat to the physical safety of others,” Roberts wrote.

50 GOP military veterans sign letter condemning Walz’s service record – Los Angeles Times

Trump never served in the military, and a string of deferments enabled him to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. After graduating high school from the New York Military Academy in 1964, he received four education deferments to attend college.

In 1968, at age 22, he got a medical deferment for having bone spurs in his heels.

In a speech about reproductive rights at the Democratic convention on Tuesday night, Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Army veteran who lost both her legs while serving in Iraq, called Trump “old Cadet Bone Spurs.”

“I went to war to protect America’s rights and freedoms, so I take it personally when a five-time draft dodging coward like Donald Trump tries to take away my rights and freedoms in return,” Duckworth said.

Trump in recent days has been criticized for saying the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, is “much better” than the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, because its recipients “either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.”

US announces more support for Africa’s mpox response | CIDRAP

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) yesterday announced an additional $35 million in emergency health assistance for the clade 1 mpox outbreak in Central and East Africa.

In a statement, USAID said the announcement brings the total help for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other affected countries to $55 million and that the new funding is pending congressional notification.

The funding will help USAID continue its close work with affected countries, which includes help with actions such as surveillance, diagnostics, risk communication, and vaccination planning and coordination.
