China points to shrimp as coronavirus carrier after salmon debacle, East Asia News & Top Stories – The Straits Times

The virus tested positive on both the inside and outside of the shrimp packaging, said China’s General Administration of Customs. The samples were from three Ecuadorian plants, and imports from those processors will be halted, it said.

“The test result doesn’t mean the virus is contagious, but reflects the loopholes in companies’ food safety regulations,” said Mr Bi Kexin, director of the food import and export safety bureau in the customs department.

Why Trump’s White Grievance Message Strikes a Sour Note in the Suburbs – The New York Times

From North Carolina to Pennsylvania to Arizona, interviews this week with more than two dozen suburban voters in critical swing states revealed abhorrence for Mr. Trump’s growing efforts to fuel white resentment with inflammatory rhetoric on race and cultural heritage. The discomfort was palpable even among voters who also dislike the recent toppling of Confederate statues or who say they agree with some of Mr. Trump’s policies.

As the president increasingly stakes his candidacy on a message of “law and order,” casting himself as a bulwark against “angry mobs” and “thugs,’’ there are signs that he is alienating voters in bedroom communities who approach the debate over racial justice with a far more nuanced perspective than the president does.

2020 US Election: Trump says 1 in 5 mail-in ballots fraudulent | Daily Mail Online

(Trump and family all voted absentee – which of them voted fraudulently?) President Donald Trump on Friday returned to one of his favorite complaints – that mail-in ballots shouldn’t be used in the election, claiming one in five will be frauds.

There Are No Latinx Shows Left on Network Television

Stupid is as stupid does. mqic0wy7hndjtraa92qw.jpg

In June, ABC announced they wouldn’t be renewing The Baker and The Beauty, a Latinx romantic comedy series centered around the love story of a man working for his family’s Cuban bakery and a wealthy celebrity. The show only aired for one season and was canceled due to low ratings—which likely weren’t helped by its…

What would annexation of parts of the West Bank mean for Palestinians? — podcast

US to impose sanctions on Chinese for abuse of minorities; says nothing about sanctions on Israel for abuse of Palestinians lives and living.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has proposed permanently seizing Palestinian territory by annexing swathes of the West Bank – a violation of international law. Journalist Mariam Barghouti describes how this would just formalise a system that millions of Palestinians are already enduring, while Jerusalem correspondent Oliver Holmes examines what is driving Netanyahu’s latest plans

In April last year, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced he planned to annex Jewish settlements, outposts in the West Bank where hundreds of thousands of Israelis live, to global condemnation. In September, the Israeli leader added he would also annex the Jordan Valley, which makes up to one-third of the West Bank and borders Jordan. The Guardian’s Jerusalem correspondent, Oliver Holmes, tells Anushka Asthana why the support of US president Donald Trump, who may lose the election in November, has emboldened Netanyahu.

Much uncertainty however, remains around when, how – or even if – Netanyahu will push forward with annexation and what effect it could have. Palestinian journalist Mariam Barghouti – based in Ramallah – and Salem Barahmeh, who is the executive director of the Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy and lives in the Jordan Valley, describe the impact the Israel occupation already has on the lives of millions of Palestinians.

Texas GOP sues Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner over canceled convention | The Texas Tribune

The gathering, which was expected to draw around 6,000 people, was set to happen next week in Houston.

“It’s ironic that they’re going to the courthouse … to ask them to agree to allow 6,000 people to meet in-person when even the judicial community is hearing cases virtually,” Turner said.
