I am the morning rose.

At dawn, I stand erect.

The breeze carries the scent of my dreams.

My petals form a thousand smiles,

the ones Hafez once wrote about.

I will gently wither. I am patient.

My petals will crumble

and may be used to make rose sherbet.

I will then melt on the tongue of children

and become laughter.

L.A. on verge of shutting down again as record cases reported – Los Angeles Times

The worsening conditions come as California closes many businesses that had been allowed to reopen in May as officials try to slow the outbreaks. But Los Angeles said that if the trends don’t change soon, even more restrictive measures will be necessary.

Los Angeles County confirmed 4,244 new cases and 2,103 hospitalizations Tuesday. Of those hospitalized, 27% are in intensive care. The county also reported 73 additional deaths — one of the highest single-day counts reported. It’s possible that number may reflect a lag in reported deaths over the weekend, officials said in a statement.

Police integrity is the challenge of our time

Disgruntled, racist, incompetent, or criminal cops are cancers to our profession. The damage they inflict ripples through our agencies and our communities, widening ever outward. Allowing even a 5% rate of cancerous behaviors in an agency of say 1000, means 50 cops walking around with everything from a shitty attitude to a racist mindset to a criminal disposition. Imagine the ripple effect of 50 cops multiplied by dozens or more citizen interactions per day, multiplied by years or decades? That’s damage done by the tens of thousands, rippling throughout communities in this country.

Square Cop In A Round World

I started writing this blog a few years ago out of a sense that policing—the profession I love and spent 25 years serving—was losing its way. But, then, as I gained more perspective through time and distance of retirement, I realized we were always on shaky ground.

I entered the police academy in November of 1989 and hit the street three months later as a naïve, but energetic rookie, eager to save the world. Of course, I soon realized that idealism is difficult to maintain.

My first assignment was to a midnight squad that worked the largest public housing complex in the city. The housing projects on the east side got the most media attention, but we had our share of unrest. Almost every Friday and Saturday night in those days, our squad was met with angry crowds, and we’d gather beneath overhangs to keep the rocks and bottles from…

Rhinovirus rampant or testing triumphant? – Virology Down Under

It should be no surprise that when we keep humans apart to stop the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the beneficial effects extend to other infections.

Influenza virus detections in Australia fell through the floor once restrictions (see the graph below) were applied to travel and close and prolonged interactions at workplaces and sports events and schools in March.

Outcry after Iran’s judiciary upholds death penalty for three protesters

Shameful display of fear by government. Amnesty will help.

Appeal against sentences handed to men over alleged role in anti-government protests fails

Iran’s judiciary has upheld the death penalty for three men accused of involvement in last November’s massive anti-government protests, sparking an outcry from human rights groups and a swell of activism against capital punishment on social media.

A spokesman for the Iranian judiciary told an official website on Tuesday that an appeal against the sentences had failed for the trio, who say their confessions were “extracted under aberrant conditions”, according to their lawyers. The lawyers say they have been denied access to the case.

Trump Snaps ‘So Are White People’ When Asked Why Black People Are Killed By Cops | HuffPost

A 2016 Washington Post story notes white people make up about 49% of those who are killed by police officers, while Black Americans account for 24% of those fatally shot and killed by the police. However, since Black people make up just 13% of the U.S. population, that means they are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers.
