Greene had posted hours of Facebook videos in which made a trove of racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic comments — including an assertion that Black people “are held slaves to the Democratic Party,” and that George Soros, a Jewish Democratic megadonor, is a Nazi.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in June — through his spokesman, Drew Florio — that he found those comments “appalling,” and he had “no tolerance for them.” But Florio said last week that McCarthy is remaining neutral and letting the primary process play out

Despite the slew of racist Facebook videos uncovered by POLITICO, Greene still has some high-profile support in Washington: She is backed by the House Freedom Fund, the political arm of the Freedom Caucus; Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, a top Trump ally; and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and his wife, Debbie. When the Georgia seat’s incumbent, Rep. Tom Graves, announced his retirement, the Freedom Caucus encouraged Greene to abandon her run in the competitive 6th District, where former GOP Rep. Karen Handel was making a comeback bid, and run for the open seat, which was more conservative, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Hutchinson issues executive order, says COVID-19 valid reason to request absentee ballot | ArkLaTexHomepage – Arkansas

“This order affirms Secretary of State John Thurston’s position that the fear of exposure to COVID-19 or of exposing others at the polls is reason enough for a voter to cast an absentee ballot,” Governor Hutchinson said.

The order allows all 75 of Arkansas’s county clerks to prepare the ballots for counting a week before Election Day without opening the envelopes.

97,000 children reportedly test positive for COVID-19 as schools gear up for instruction – CBS News

Nearly 100,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus in the last two weeks of July, a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics finds. Just over 97,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus from July 16 to July 30, according to the association.

Out of almost 5 million reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S., CBS News’ Michael George reports that the group found that more than 338,000 were children.

Vanderbilt University’s Dr. Tina Hartert hopes increased testing of children will help determine what role they play in transmission, as school districts around the country return to some form of school. She is leading a government-funded study that saw DIY testing kits sent to some 2,000 families.

“The kits are shipped to the families, they are taught how to collect these samples, and then the samples are sent back by the families to a central repository,” she said.

Abe says Japan must avoid declaring coronavirus emergency to help economy

Lost touch with reality of what Covid-19 is and can do to cripple economy by striking over and over again – WAKE UP!

TOKYO (BLOOMBERG) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the country must try to avoid declaring another emergency, in order to soften the blow to the economy caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Private-sector economists expect gross domestic product to have fallen by more than 20 per cent in the April-June quarter, he told reporters in the south-western city of Nagasaki. That would be a worse hit than the financial crisis, which caused more than a million people to lose their jobs, Mr Abe added.

“Considering the effect on employment and livelihoods, we must do all we can to avoid re-issuing the declaration, while controlling the infection as far as possible,” he said. Under a state of emergency declared in April, many businesses closed and people were urged to stay at home.

The central government hasn’t issued a blanket request that people avoid travel over the traditional Obon holidays this month, even as some regional governors declare their own emergencies, or urge residents to stay put.

Mr Abe said the government would provide two trillion yen (S$26 billion) in aid for virus-hit hospitals, and that more would be available if needed.

Many of Japan’s privately run medical facilities have been hit hard by the pandemic, and the government fears that widespread bankruptcies would make it impossible to deal with any sudden increase in coronavirus patients, the Yomiuri newspaper said earlier on Sunday (Aug 9).

Hospitals that are accepting Covid-19 patients have had to cut back on other services, reducing their income. Even those that don’t treat the coronavirus are seeing a fall-off in consultations, as many people avoid enclosed spaces for fear of infection.

While Japan’s data has been called into question because of limited testing, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare had recorded 1,039 total deaths from the virus as of Saturday – a figure the US often reaches in a day.
