Alexei Navalny: Evidence of poisoning, says Berlin hospital – BBC News

His condition was “serious but not life-threatening” the statement said.

Cystic fibrosis drug found to be ‘life-changing’ in new Dalhousie study | Globalnews.ca

Stanojevic says one of the key findings of the drug’s impact was that the estimated age of survival for an individual with CF would improve by 9.2 years over the course of 10 years. Death rates would reduce by 15 per cent, she says.

Stanojevic says this therapy could potentially be effective for 90 per cent of people living with cystic fibrosis in Canada.

”It’s thousands of people in Canada where their disease could be completely changed,” she said.

Saunders was given a copy of the study’s findings last week and he says he was in shock.

“Just reading that one-pager brought me to tears. It was probably one of the most mind-bending experiences of my adult life, to see how much of an impact this one little pill can have on so many people,” Saunders says.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb: Covid-19 plasma treatment might help, not home run

  • The blood plasma treatment for coronavirus patients granted emergency approval by the Trump administration may be somewhat effective, Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC.
  • “I think that this could be beneficial. It might be weakly beneficial,” Gottlieb said.
  • “It doesn’t look like a home run, but right now we’re looking for singles and doubles” in treating the virus, Trump’s former FDA chief added.

Mississippi Now Has the Worst COVID-19 Outbreak in US, Report Says : US News : Latin Post – Latin news, immigration, politics, culture

Mississippi is the only state currently considered a “Red Zone,” where daily new cases surpass 25 per 100,000 residents, according to a Harvard Global Health initiative COVID-19 tracker.

Other states like Texas, Florida, Georgia, and California are seeing higher total case counts due to their larger populations. But the infection rates in Mississippi are higher per capita compared to these populated states.

Mississippi had reached a total of 77,894 cases and 2,240 deaths, as of Sunday afternoon. Cases have decreased over the past two weeks in the state, but Mississippi officials have warned the public that a new surge might be on its way.

The state health officer for the Mississippi State Department of Health, Thomas Dobbs, MD, MPH, said he expects an even more severe surge this week.

Dobbs said this was due to schools, colleges, and “really, really bad judgment coming together.” This could be dangerous in counties with high infection rates. Some Mississippi counties have already topped 100 new daily cases per 100,000 residents.

“A lot of the outbreaks we’re seeing at the high schools is because the parents are hosting parties. Senior parties, groups, spend-the-night parties. I don’t know why this doesn’t scare people, but it’s illegal,” Dobbs said in a report.

‘Selfies’ could be used to detect heart disease – ScienceBlog.com

The study is the first to show that it’s possible to use a deep learning computer algorithm to detect coronary artery disease (CAD) by analysing four photographs of a person’s face. Although the algorithm needs to be developed further and tested in larger groups of people from different ethnic backgrounds, the researchers say it has the potential to be used as a screening tool that could identify possible heart disease in people in the general population or in high-risk groups, who could be referred for further clinical investigations.

Living And Dying In A Banana Republic

Deja vu – Jonestown?

In Saner Thought

Sending troops to attack protesters…..jailing journalists…..sending police to voting stations….all this sounds like some third world Banana Republic.

The questions is being asked….do we now live in a Banana Republic (not the retail giant)?

How would we know?

Jack A. Goldstone has given us a few of the characteristics……

To sum up, let me offer a short (well, not so short) list. You know you are living in a banana republic when:

1. The top policy-making jobs go to the President’s children and in-laws, rather than to experienced, qualified professionals.

2. Second-tier jobs go to friends and hangers-on of the President (e.g. having the President’s family wedding-planner appointed to a top housing job in the country’s largest city; or appointing people with no scientific qualifications to critical jobs overseeing scientific/technical programs).

3. Qualified professionals are reduced to window-dressing; they don’t attend key meetings and are not put in charge of…

Notre Dame responds to student newspaper’s plea regarding Covid-19 – CNN

The university on Tuesday said it would move to digital learning for two weeks in an effort to stem the spread of the virus as the number of cases jumped. If the virus continues to spread, the school will shift to remote learning for the rest of the semester.
The Observer, a student newspaper for Notre Dame and nearby Saint Mary’s College and Holy Cross College, ran the editorial on its front page Friday, asking everyone — students, the administration and faculty — to do everything in their power to contain the virus.
“The University administration has largely blamed the COVID-19 outbreak on students attending off-campus parties,” the editorial said. “While this isn’t entirely misplaced, it has been used to deflect responsibility from the very administrations that insisted they were prepared for us to return to campus. Clearly, they were not.”

Maine CDC now links 53 COVID-19 cases to Millinocket wedding reception – Portland Press Herald

The number of COVID-19 cases connected to a wedding reception in Millinocket continues to climb, with state health officials saying on Saturday that they could trace 53 confirmed cases of coronavirus to the reception. That’s up from 32 confirmed cases on Friday. Those affected range in age from 4 to 98 years old, with a median age of 41. A woman who did not attend the reception died on Friday after contracting COVID-19 from a person who did attend the event, health authorities said. They did not identify her, nor the guest she came into contact with.
