Jamaica’s “development” should not mean collateral damage to the environment – Petchary’s Blog

I have accepted that our current political administration is a fully paid-up member of what I call the “Cult of Development.” Also, “infrastructure” is a must, according to recent comments in a PR video by Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ office; it showed highways and buildings under construction as examples. I always thought these two words – infrastructure and development – meant just a little more than simply concrete. Perhaps I am wrong. Anyway, we are told it’s good for us…

U.S. charges former Trump adviser over work for sanctioned Russian TV | AP News

The Justice Department has charged a Russian-born U.S. citizen and former adviser to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign with working for a sanctioned Russian state television network and laundering the proceeds.

Indictments announced Thursday allege that Dimitri Simes and his wife received over $1 million dollars and a personal car and driver in exchange for work they did for Russia’s Channel One since June 2022. The network was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2022 over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

JD Vance says school shootings are a “fact of life” | Salon.com

(Me: he is talking about a 14 year old and a school that had armed security… he has no clue or solution)

“If these psychos are going to go after our kids we’ve got to be prepared for it,” Vance said, bucking a question asked on gun control measures and instead championing efforts to spend more on school security, per the Associated Press. “We don’t have to like the reality that we live in, but it is the reality we live in. We’ve got to deal with it.”

Vance, who noted that the event was an “awful tragedy,” faced criticism in June for calling gun violence in schools a “fake problem” and called an attempt to ban bump stocks, used in the Las Vegas shooting that killed 60, a “huge distraction.”

“I don’t like that this is a fact of life,” Vance said at the Thursday rally. “But if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security at our schools. We’ve got to bolster security so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children they’re not able.”

Massachusetts doctor gets prison sentence over Jan. 6 police officer punch

A Massachusetts physician who admitted she punched a police officer during the Jan. 6 U.S. capitol riot was sentenced to nine months in prison Thursday, the Department of Justice announced.

The big picture: Jacquelyn Starer, 71, of Ashland, joined other rioters entering the Capitol building through the Rotunda doors some 15 minutes after they had been breached after attending the “Stop the Steal” rally that preceded the attack and moved to the front of a police line protecting then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, per prosecutors.

Jacquelyn Starer "lifts [her] fist before striking Officer M.B.," per a DOJ sentencing memo.

Protesters march in Tel Aviv with makeshift coffins to demand release of Gaza hostages | Euronews

Protesters say the Israeli government hasn’t done enough to secure the release of their loved ones and accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of potentially derailing talks with new demands.

Protesters have staged a sombre march through Tel Aviv carrying makeshift coffins draped with Israeli flags to symbolise the hostages still being held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

They’re angry with the Israeli government who they say hasn’t done enough to strike a ceasefire and secure the release of their loved ones.

“Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, sentenced Carmel, my cousin, to death,” said Gil Dickmann, the cousin of Carmel Gat whose body was recovered by the Israeli military from Gaza on Saturday.

“327 days she was there in Gaza, in captivity. There were 327 opportunities to bring her back.”
