Covid-19: Father shares antibodies after daughter’s death – BBC News

Alan Mack donating plasma Alan Mack, whose daughter Rebecca died in April, is part of a clinical trial of so-called “convalescent” plasma.

The hope is that antibodies built up by people who have had the virus will help others recover.

“I don’t want anybody, if at all possible, to go through what we had to go through,” Mr Mack said.

“There are so many people, I think, who just think it won’t happen to them – and it can.”

How Rhode Island Reopened Schools – The New York Times

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/09/us/how-rhode-island-reopened-schools.html

Gov. Gina Raimondo put public and private schools on a single calendar to simplify reopening. She opened 14 rapid testing locations exclusively for students and teaching staff, and set up a statewide contact tracing system just for schools.

“Because we had those conversations, we had the protocol and the procedures in place, my team knew what to do,” said Sindy Giard, the school’s principal. “When something like this happens, you have to review your plan and tweak it a little bit.”

Dorsey, the principal in Smithfield, regularly refers to an exhaustive protocol guide that the state put out to help educators think through possible scenarios. “The protocols are awesome,” she said. “Anytime I’m like, ‘What kind of sign am I supposed to have in the bathrooms?’ I just look it up.”

Administrators and health officials say the ultimate success of Rhode Island’s plan isn’t about avoiding coronavirus cases altogether — that’s just not realistic — but about how the system handles them.

White House hosted Covid ‘superspreader’ event, Dr Fauci says | RNZ News

(FILES) In this file photo taken on September 26, 2020 with few wearing masks to protect against the coronavirus, CBS News Radio White House correspondent Steven Portnoy asked what Dr Fauci, a veteran health official, thought of the White House’s reluctance to insist on mask-wearing and social distancing as virus precautions, and instead rely on regular testing.

“The data speak for themselves – we had a superspreader event in the White House, and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks.”

El Paso coronavirus cases hit record highs | The Texas Tribune

El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego hinted this week he might use a provision in Abbott’s order that allows county officials to opt out of reopening bars. “Unfortunately, the group with the highest percentage of active COVID cases are young people between the ages of 20-29. Opening bars in El Paso will only further increase the positive cases in this age group,” he said in a statement, adding that he’ll make a decision soon after consulting with local health authorities. There have been more than 400 violations or citations issued by local law enforcement or health department officials to entities or individuals in the county for violating state and local ordinances issued to curb the spread of the virus. As cases rise, school districts in El Paso County are looking for ways to keep schools completely closed or limit the number of students coming back. The Texas Education Agency largely requires districts to allow all students back who choose to learn in person.

Franklin County, Ohio, Replacing 50,000 Ballots To Fix Error : NPR – (no rigging just a screw up being corrected by bi-partisan board of elections and GOP Sec. of State)

A large Ohio county determined that about 50,000 voters received an incorrect absentee ballot (just like the one that Trump used) this week – accounting for almost 21% of the ballots mailed out this week in Franklin County, which includes the state capital of Columbus.

In a press release Friday, the election board said it’s started the process of printing and mailing replacement ballots to every voter who received the wrong ballot. Those ballots will be sent through the U.S. Postal Service within 72 hours.

“We want to make it clear that every voter who received an inaccurate ballot will receive a corrected ballot,” the board said. “Stringent tracking measures are in place to guarantee that a voter can only cast one vote.”

The election board also plans to mail informational postcards to all impacted voters telling them about the problem and what to do next. Voters can verify the information on their ballot here.
