Who are the ultra-Orthodox community fooling, who are they killing? – The Jerusalem Post
Doctors and scientists still do not fully understand this virus, but there are some things they know. They know that avoiding large groups save lives. They know that wearing masks save lives. They know that social distancing saves lives. And they know the importance of hand-washing. It’s not rocket science, but it is science. Maybe, just maybe – if we all do our best to follow the advice of the health professionals and others who know what they’re talking about – by next Purim we will be able to sing and dance and dine and rejoice with no fear of spreading the virus.

Bending the Curve: The Restorative Power of Planet-Based Diets
via aleksey godin – good post and information.

Today World Wildlife Fund released a new report, Bending the Curve: The Restorative Power of Planet-Based Diets, exploring how a global shift toward PLANET-based diets, high in human-health benefits and low in environmental impacts, can restore nature and improve health. A supplement to this report, Why we need to shift to a Planet-Based Diet in the US (and how we can get there, together), discusses the specifics of a PLANET-based diet in the US—what it could look like, what impacts it would have, and what other actions are needed to transform our food system.
“Taking a look at our food system today and seeing hunger, inequity, and environmental devastation, you might think it’s simply impossible to feed 8-10 billion people without destroying the planet. But that’s not the case; in fact, the opposite is true. Not only can we feed the entire population of Earth, we can do it in a way that improves human health globally and allows nature to recover from the damage we’ve caused. A global shift in diets to prioritize nutrition hand-in-hand with sustainability—something that will look different in every country—has the potential reverse biodiversity loss, combat climate change, and save human lives.” –Brent Loken, Global Food Lead Scientist, World Wildlife Fund
“The US food system is one of the most important levers we have for solving climate and biodiversity crises, and what we eat and how much we consume matters. Even simple changes to our diets, like eating in line with National Dietary Guidelines, would take us a long way toward positive outcomes for both human health and the environment. And if you can combine these efforts with others—a shift to regenerative and resilient agricultural systems, a less wasteful supply chain, and policies that incentivize producing food with human nutrition and planetary-health at the forefront—we will see positive impacts for people and planet at a global scale.” –Melissa D. Ho, Senior Vice President, Freshwater and Food, World Wildlife Fund
Ozone hole increases in size
Via Aleksey Godin – Scientists from the European Union’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) say the hole which forms each year over the South Pole has reached its maximum size for 2020 as one of the biggest in recent years.
The return of a large hole after an “unusually small and short-lived” ozone hole in 2019 shows the need to continue enforcing the global Montreal Protocol, which banned chemicals such as CFCs that deplete ozone, experts said.

Russia’s coronavirus vaccine: Human trials begin in the Middle East
Russia had already announced on its website dedicated to the vaccine that several countries, including the UAE as well as the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and “possibly India and Brazil,” would partake in “post-registration clinical trials” of the vaccine. Its mass production was expected to start in September 2020, but it’s uncertain whether or not this has begun.

DOJ formalizes request for encryption back-doors
And people are accepting that TicTok is a danger and our government wants: “The US Department of Justice, in conjunction with the “Five Eyes” nations, has issued a statement asking Apple and other tech companies to effectively create backdoors that will weaken encryption strength overall to provide law enforcement access to data.” The US Department of Justice, in conjunction with the “Five Eyes” nations, has issued a statement asking Apple and other tech companies to effectively create backdoors that will weaken encryption strength overall to provide law enforcement access to data.
In a statement released on Sunday by the US Department of Justice, the “International Statement: End-to-End Encryption and Public Safety” is a continuation of the long-running encryption debate. In the latest salvo in the ongoing war, representatives of governments from multiple countries are demanding access to encrypted data for the sake of sexually exploited children. The lengthy statement demands tech companies “embed the safety of the public in system designs” relating to encryption, to enable companies to “act against illegal content and activity effectively with no reduction to safety,” while enabling law enforcement to do its job. This includes enabling law enforcement officials “access to content in a readable and usable format where an authorization is lawfully issued, is necessary and proportionate, and is subject to strong safeguards and oversight.”

Remdesivir study finally published – an expert in critical care medicine gives us his verdict – ($2,340 per treatment)
So when I go into my hospital this week and am confronted on the wards with patients who are ill with COVID-19, ACTT-1 tells me that, provided I can find remdesivir on the pharmacy shelf, I should be confident to use it in any patients who are receiving oxygen alone, in the hope that they will recover sooner and, more importantly, avoid progression to needing ventilation on intensive care. I should also continue to use dexamethasone as normal, expecting added benefit.
The study also tells me that I should not shut the doors to the intensive care unit just yet. By prescribing remdesivir on top of applying the best treatment available, one in ten patients will continue to deteriorate and die. Remdesivir is not the magic bullet. If one exists, it has yet to be designed.
