Netherlands imposes ‘partial’ lockdown | New Europe

Under the new restrictions, bars, restaurants and cafes will close (with restaurants and coffee shops remaining open only for take-away), while face masks are becoming mandatory in all indoor places for people aged over 13. The so-called “social bubble” will be limited to four people, both indoors and outdoors and the sale of alcohol will be banned after 8pm.

Contrary to restrictions imposed in spring, schools will remain open and public transport will be normally functioning, while all outdoor events, such as concerts and festivals will be cancelled.

Moscow city council members ask district attorney to block mayor’s latest coronavirus orders — Meduza (profit before health in Moscow)

According to the newspaper Kommersant, the city council members want to know specifically if Russia’s Constitution and Labor Code allow the mayor to demand workers’ personal information. Deputy Mikhail Timonov, one of the authors of the appeal to the D.A., notes that Article 88 of Russia’s Labor Code prohibits employers from sharing workers’ personal data with anyone without their written consent, except when it’s necessary to prevent an employee’s injury or loss of life. The biggest radioactive spill in US history never ended – By Ranjani Chakraborty and Melissa Hirsch Oct 13, 2020, 1:40pm EDT | Just Sayin’

For decades, Navajo Nation was a primary source for the United States’ uranium stockpile during the nuclear arms race. It was home to more than 700 uranium mines, which provided jobs to Navajo residents. But the mining industry came with impending peril. Cases of lung cancer and other diseases began cropping up in a community that had previously had few of them. Land, air, and water was poisoned. And on July 16, 1979, the mining led to the biggest radioactive spill in US history.

Watch the video above to hear from residents in Church Rock, New Mexico, who’ve lived with the effects of the spill. More than 40 years later, the site still hasn’t been properly cleaned up, and residents continue to face illnesses, tainted water, and the loss of livestock. Today, with the Environmental Protection Agency’s new plan for cleanup, they’re worried it could wipe out their entire community.

Sanctions, What Are They Good For?

In Saner Thought

I see that Donald the Orange has once again used his favorite tool for international situations….sanctions.

This time it is sanctions used against Iran….again.

The US slapped new sanctions on Iran’s financial sector on Thursday in an attempt to further isolate the Islamic Republic’s economy. The new measures target 18 Iranian banks and subjects foreign, non-Iranian institutions to penalties for doing business with them.

“Today’s action to identify the financial sector and sanction 18 major Iranian banks reflects our commitment to stop illicit access to US dollars,” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The move comes after Washington’s European allies have been warning of the humanitarian consequences sanctions can have on Iran. The country is already facing an economic crisis due to previous US sanctions, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

European countries have been at odds with the Trump administration over its…

“It is time to change things and be people rather than a simple cog in this money factory, to be in solidarity and to mobilize to try to prevent the human race from being reduced to slavery by a few. We must do it for ourselves, for our children, for the planet and for social justice.”
