Asia Today: India’s virus cases jump on New Delhi resurgence

India’s coronavirus outbreak increased by more than 50,000 cases Thursday amid a resurgence of infections in the capital.

The Health Ministry also reported another 704 fatalities in the past 24 hours across the country, raising India’s overall death toll to 124,315.

Nerves are frayed in New Delhi after it reported a record 6,842 new cases in the past 24 hours. It has more than 37,000 active cases.

The ministry has attributed the surge in New Delhi to the festival season and warned that the situation can worsen due to people crowding markets for festival shopping.

Covid: Liverpool testing trial sites doubled after queues on first day – BBC News

Queues outside a Liverpool testing site The number of coronavirus testing sites in Liverpool has doubled after “really good interest” in the scheme, its public health director has said.

Matthew Ashton said a total of up to 12,000 people were tested at six centres on Friday as England’s first trial of city-wide testing began.

Mr Ashton said a further eight sites were brought in on Saturday.

The city council said it could extend the two-week pilot scheme as more opened.

All residents and workers in Liverpool – the first area to be placed under England’s tier three restrictions – have been offered regular tests, regardless of whether they display symptoms.

Five things that October data says about COVID-19 – USAFacts

17 jobs remain lost for every 10 coronavirus cases.

The latest state-level data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 12.3 million fewer people were employed in September than in February. No state has fully regained the jobs lost during the pandemic.

With 7,174,631 known cases at the end of September, there were 1.7 fewer jobs for every known COVID-19 case in the US compared to February employment levels. States with lower case counts compared with other states tend to have the highest ratio of jobs lost. In Vermont, where there have been 1,752 known cases through September, there were also 23,800 fewer jobs. That’s 13.6 jobs lost per case. In Hawaii, which had a 12,410 cumulative case count at the end of September, it still had 131,000 fewer jobs than in February. That’s 10.6 jobs lost per case.

On the other end, Mississippi had 98,189 cases as of September 30. It also had 3,800 fewer jobs than in February. That’s one job lost for every 25 cases.
