Coronavirus spread by young people, but it’s elderly who die – Los Angeles Times

Coronavirus is again surging in Los Angeles County, and that has prompted calls for people to stay home as much as possible and led to discussions about a possible curfew or additional restrictions on businesses.

The disease is spiking across the county, affecting all age groups, but some remain most vulnerable. While the age of COVID-19 patients has declined, older people are still dying at very high rates from the illness.

Communities of color also remain hard hit, as do people with underlying health problems.

And young people gathering with those outside their households remains a major problem, officials say. The spread of the virus by young adults is resulting in the deaths of L.A. County’s elderly, according to Barbara Ferrer, the county’s public health director. People 80 and older are seeing significant increases in serious illness.

Food Insecurity In NYC Rises Precipitously With No Federal Help In Sight – Gothamist

Food pantries in NYC are struggling to keep up with a dramatic increase in demand for assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has inflamed the already desperate situation faced by many New Yorkers living at the poverty line. Before the virus tore a hole through the city’s economy, some 12% of residents were already reporting food insecurity fears. That percentage has jumped to 32% of surveyed residents, according to a new report from the Robin Hood Foundation — underscoring the need for immediate federal help as local food pantries are stretched to the limit. “Before the pandemic, food pantries helped many New Yorkers get by in times of need — but since then, they have become a lifeline for millions,” said the report issued Tuesday titled “Food hardship in New York City is rising as New Yorkers wait for a second federal stimulus bill.”

Anger in North Dakota after governor asks Covid-positive health workers to keep working | US news | The Guardian

But despite the trauma and exhaustion of the last eight months, she was shocked when North Dakota’s governor, Doug Burgum, said last week that healthcare workers who test positive for coronavirus but do not display symptoms could still report to work. The order, which is in line with CDC guidance for mitigating staff shortages, would only allow asymptomatic health workers who test positive to work in Covid units, and treat patients who already have the virus. But many feel the idea endangers the workers themselves and their colleagues. It comes as North Dakota faces one of the worst outbreaks of Covid-19 and grapples with healthcare staff shortages.

Afghanistan: NATO chief warns against hasty troop withdrawal | News | DW | 17.11.2020

The NATO chief added that Afghanistan still “risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands. And ISIS (the “Islamic State” militia) could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it lost in Syria and Iraq.” NATO took charge of the international security effort in Afghanistan in 2003, two years after a US-led coalition invaded the country and dismantled the Taliban regime.

Coronavirus: DeWine announces 21-day curfew starting Thursday

The curfew does not apply people going to and from work, anyone getting groceries or picking up takeout, going to the hospital or picking up medicine, DeWine said.

“The goal is to have fewer contacts,” he said. “The whole idea is if you can slow these contacts down it will go a long way in slowing this virus down.”

Night Owl Poetry - Dorinda Duclos

Child
Who is
Reflected
On the water
Bares her soul aloud
In the silence of night
As barren trees listen, watch
Her attention lies far away
Scattered thoughts unleash a roaring din
She wonders if the birds can hear them, too

US vets with COVID-related kidney injury at 6.7 times risk of death | CIDRAP

COVID-19 patients with AKI (acute kidney injury) were 6.5 times more likely than their peers to require mechanical ventilation and stay in the hospital an additional 5.6 days. They were also 6.7 times more likely to die of their illness, a link that was particularly strong in blacks. Of the 832 veterans with coronavirus who died, 559 (34%) had AKI, compared with 273 (8%) of those who didn’t.

Two-hundred-one of 1,655 patients with AKI (12%) required kidney replacement treatments such as dialysis. But during the study period, rates of AKI fell from 40% to 27%, and numbers needing kidney replacement therapy declined from 44% to 17%.

There was significant geographic variation in rates of AKI, ranging from 10% to 56%, with higher rates seen in areas in which hospitals cared for higher proportions of black veterans. The authors said that the proportion of black patients explained 31% of the geographical variation in AKI rates and 49% of the variation over time.

COVID-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool

This map shows the risk level of attending an event, given the event size and location.

You can reduce the risk that one case becomes many by wearing a mask, distancing, and gathering outdoors in smaller groups
