Mass. reports highest-ever number of new COVID-19 cases after technological issue

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported an additional 3,224 confirmed COVID-19 cases Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 207,284.

This marks the highest number of new confirmed cases that state health officials have reported since the coronavirus hit Massachusetts.

Wednesday’s report was issued more than an hour and a half later than normal. The DPH says the delay was caused by a technological issue that resulted in an interruption of the data download.

Texas bars use restaurant loophole to reopen during the pandemic | The Texas Tribune (lack of courage to take on and control virus is killing and sickening Texas – needlessly!)

If the current trend continues — over 8,300 Texans were hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infections Monday, up by nearly 900 from last week — “there may be a time in which it is appropriate to shut down bars and restaurants completely,” Norwood said.

Austin health officials agree.

“We are at a precarious spot right now where cases are rising across the country,  cases are rising across Texas,” said Mark Escott, interim Austin-Travis County health authority, before adding, “We really have to find a way to stabilize things to avoid that surge.”

But Abbott, who has concentrated power within himself to take action on COVID-19, said he has no plans to do so. He did not respond to requests for comment.

California, Texas shatter single-day nationwide record for new coronavirus cases | TheHill

California reported around 18,350 cases and Texas reported nearly 16,100 according to The Washington Post. The numbers are about 3,000 and 1,000 more cases than California and Texas had previously reported, respectively, as record highs.

Both states are currently the first and only in the U.S. to surpass 1 million coronavirus cases.

The Post reports that almost 2,300 deaths were reported nationally, making Wednesday the deadliest day in the U.S. since May

Saudi Activist Who Fought For Women’s Right to Drive Is Sent to Terrorism Court – The New York Times – (Exactly why Saudis are not to be trusted)

Appearing weak and shaking uncontrollably, one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent prisoners, the women’s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul, appeared before a Saudi judge on Wednesday to learn that her case was being transferred to a special court for terrorism and national security crimes, her family said.

Ms. al-Hathloul, 31, has been detained since spring 2018 and charged with crimes that include seeking to change the kingdom’s political system, campaigning for women’s rights and communicating with foreign journalists, diplomats and human rights organizations.

Rights groups have called her trial a sham and accused the kingdom of using its courts to punish her and other activists for their outspokenness.

Avian Flu Diary: Nature: Coronaviruses Closely Related to the Pandemic Virus Discovered in Japan & Cambodia

Coronaviruses closely related to the pandemic virus discovered in Japan and Cambodia The viruses, both found in bats stored in laboratory freezers, are the first SARS-CoV-2 relatives to be found outside China. Two lab freezers in Asia have yielded surprising discoveries. Researchers have told Nature they have found a coronavirus that is closely related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the pandemic, in horseshoe bats stored in a freezer in Cambodia. Meanwhile, a team in Japan has reported the discovery of another closely related coronavirus — also found in frozen bat droppings.

Studies find no COVID benefit for preventive hydroxychloroquine or for convalescent plasma | CIDRAP

Two studies published yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine found that two once-promising but largely discredited COVID-19 treatments—hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma—didn’t prevent infection or lead to clinical improvement. Zero per mill Belarusian doctors spark solidarity demonstrations following arrests over article on protester’s death — Meduza

On November 19, law enforcement officers in Minsk arrested Artem Sorokin, an anesthesiologist at the Minsk Emergency Hospital, and Katerina Borisevich, a journalist for the Belarus news outlet Tut.by.

The arrests came after Tut.by published an article about the death of protester Raman Bandarenka — who was hospitalized with severe injuries on November 12, after being beaten during an altercation over opposition symbols. The article maintained that when he was in the hospital, Raman Bandarenka’s blood alcohol level was zero. This contradicted allegations from both the Belarusian Investigative Committee and subsequently, Alexander Lukashenko, that Bandarenka was drunk.
